Tbis nation took lbs lead over all Christendom in com encing tha new year January 1 instead of March 25. Before tba change was made tba merrymaking, culminated on the octave of the least. April 1. be visits were paid and gifts bestowed, With tbe adoption of the reformed ce endar in 1564, New Year a day was carried back to January 1, and only pretended gifts snd mock ceremonia visits were made on April 1, with the view of making fools of those wbo had forgotten the change of date. Tbe custom once started was kept op after its origin bad been forgotten. I la con tinuance was helped on by the fsct that it appeals to an integral part of the human nature which has asserted itself at all times snd in sll countries, In character, though not in point of time, All rools day corresponds with the Roman Saturnalia, when Caius and Manlius and the rest of the us a ben their classic wits to the tssk'of fooling the -other, end with the mediseva Feast of Fools, when the pre-Renais sance intellect attended In all sorts of absurdities. But the nearest and most startling analogy, not only in kind, but almost in the actual date, was and is the reast of Hun, in Hindoostan. The last day of this least is March 31, when the chief diverison is to send people on errands and expeditions that are to end in disappointment for the sendee and merriment for the sender and hi friends. "They carry the joke so far, says Colonel Pearce in his "Asiatic Researches," "as to send letters mak ing sppointments in the namea of per sons it is known must be absent from their houses at the time fixed upon, and the laugh is always in proportion the trouble given." , It is not impossible that the English borrowed their April fooling from the French. For in spite of all antiquarian guesses, the custom does not seem to have had any existence in Great Brit ain until about the beginning of the 18th century. What are known as "sleeveless" er rands have slways been a special fa vorite on this day in Fngland. Endless is the' joy if a rustic can be found so simple as to apply st the village book store, for a "History of Eve's Grand mother," at the grocer's for a pint of pigeon's milk, at the cobbler's for strap oil. The latter was a prime fa vorite. The cobbler, if he were up to the game, would promptly give the innocent customer the strap with no oi to moisten it. It is curious to find that all these jests were practiced over century and a half ago. So early as 1728 we find them thus recorded in Poor Robin s Almanac." No sooner doth St. All-fool's morn ap proach. But waggB.ere Phebus mount his gilded coacn. In sholes assemble to employ their sense, In sending fools to get intelligence: One seeks hen's teeth, in.farthest part or in town : nnomer pigeon s mint; a third a gown From strolling cobbler's stall, left there bv chance: ni i . i ... inus ieau me eiauy tribe a merrv aance. And to reward them for their harm less toil. The cobbler 'noints their limbs with the stirrup oil. Thus by contriver's inadvertent jest. One fool expos'd makes pastime for me rest. Not yet has the habit disaooeared of leaving a valuable looking package in public place, nor the trick, devised oy a refinement of strateev to meet refinement of perspicacity, of making the package heavy and hard. Still does the Small boy take delight in calling io me passing auae to look to his coat tails, when he may find them with i picee of paper pinned thereon, or may not, in either case being saluted as an April iooi. Pennsylvania has about TJ million acres of timberland, one-eighth of which ia owned by the state. The total value of the Btate's timber is 139 mill ion dollars. Mistletoe thrives on the western coasts to an extent not approached in the east. In many places this parasitic growth is responsible, directly or indi rectly, for considerable loss of timber. Forest officers in Washington and Oregon plan to discontinue the use of barbed wire on their forests. This will atfeet their own pastures and drift fences. They say barbed wire has no advantage over smooth wire, that it injures stock, and that it is more likely to be borne down by soft snow. Stock men in the Ochoco forest, in Oregon, recently constructed drift fences of smooth wire, though with some mis givings; now they say they will never use barbed wire again. AFRICAN DISCOVERS BITTER PIT CAUSE Tba London office of tha Northwest am Fruit Exchange has sent tha head office of tha Exchange a theory ad vanced by J. B. Pole Evans, tba plant pathologist of tbe Transvaal. South Africa, as ta the cause of bitter pit or Baldwin spot This will be especially interesting to fruit growers in the northwest on account of the prevalence oi Baldwin spot in certain seasons Mr. Lvsns theory follows: "My study leads ma to conclude that tbis unhealthy condition ia brought about by tha following aequenca of events: The cells surrounding tha vascular bundles, or those commonly situated at their ends, are being con tinually subjected to a great internal pressure, with the result. that they be coma enlarged and thicker walled, lb pressure is undoubtedly due to an ac cumulation of water, which inflates tbe cells to sucb a pitch thst in many cases me tension becomes so great thst the cells can no longer withstand the strsin and burst As soon aa tbe cell ia ruptured atmospheric oxygen gains access to the cell snd sets on .the ;tsn nin, producing dark colored oxy com pounds, which are precipitatied on the walls of a gummy substance while any iurtner diastatic action ia inhibited, with the result thst the starch grains remain unaltered and are always abun dant in the vicinity of tbe neurotic areas. As soon as a few of the cell bordering on the vascular bundles, or those aituated at their ends, are rup tured, their neighbors surrounding mem and depending on them for thei water supply are immediately affected and surfer also, with the result that nest of unhealthy and dried out cells become one of the dry tough bitter spots. I he main factors responsible lor tha spotting are believed to be ex cessive tranpsiration during the day, followed by sudden checking and com piete abeyance during the night. Children's Diseases Very Prevalent Whooping couuli is about everywhere, Measles and scarlet fever almost as bad Use Foley's Honey and Tar Compound or raw innamed throats and coughing Mr. I. C. Hostler, (irand Island. Kelir. says: "My three children had severe at tacks of whooping cough, and a very few doses of Foley's Honey and Tar gave them great relief," Contains no opiates. Do not accept a substitute. C. N. Clarke, Young Boy Describes Hill's Home The following is a description of the ride over the East Side road to the handsome valley residence and the home, itself, of M. M. Hill. The lit tle description was written by MaBter Arnold Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs S. A. Mitchell. Starting from the city of Hood River you cross the Hood river on a bridge. then take a winding road. On one side of the road is a hill through which the road was built. This is straight un and down; on the lower side a fence is the only protection that would keep one from going down the steep hill into the river, ihis road goes on for about mile and then you come to the straight and good roads with orchards on either aide. You go out this way for about fou miles and then a white house, red barn cottage and wood shed come into sight. The house is square with big bay windowns. a big porch. It is two stories high, with orchard on the south and east. On the north the cottage is located in which the hired man and his family live. Behind this is the wood shed where the Jap sleeps and keens batch, and on the west side there is a road. From the house you can see the mils, some with snow covering tbem This is the home of M. M. Hill, a pio neer of Hood River county. When he first settled in Hood River county his place was a lorest. Notice the differ ence that 12 years make.
