A SWAT There is no more pure in uf pprinK in the Hir than the cry of the family youngster who has caught his finmr while making an investigation of the newly iiunfj screen door. i-rirlriB 16 coniinR Bi.d the t.uzz of the fly, is boirfj heard. ".-"wat the (ly'Vcanipainns are on. Crown up men, as well as the women ai.d chi hirer, arc har.dlii.g the "swatters." I'.aUiheaded men are seen knocking the little ticklers from the tops of their craniums. The eradication of the houee fly, known to science as the wort enemy of man in peadin deadly disease Kerms, shoulil he aided by all commun ities. The local hih s.'hool has started the campaign. The city of Hood River has many (pots that miiilit be cleaned up; for they are breeding places oX th pests, and unlehs they are removed, the flits wil increase more rapidly thai; they can he killed by many horde. (iarbaKc and fwill pails are favorite resorts of the flies. Hack-yards with their filth heaps should be removed. Just take a swat at the backyards. STATE All) FOR COLL'MBIA KOAD We think that the impression that the state should furnish aid toward the construction and maintenance of the Columbia' river highway is pretty gen eral. Not the building, but the upkeep of the highway will be heavy expense. That portion of tho road passing tnrough Hood Kiver county will not henelil the residents here alone, it will be a highway to connect the eastern and western portions of the state. In deed, it will be a stato highway. Hut (iod helps them who help them selves, and the citizenn of Hood Kiver county will find tho state as a whole more ready to lend aid in the opening of the great scenic highway, when they find the local people doing all in their power to help thomselven. Hood Hivei county is going to benefit more directly from the construction of tho river highway than any other part of the stato. Indeed, the road has come to be called the rortland-Ilood Kivei Highway. While the general through trallic will count to a great extent not only here but in eastern Oregon, during the milder months of tho year there will be a daily automobile truffle from Hood Kiver to Cortland. Scenic locutions along tho river road in Hood Kiver county will appeal to Portland men of wealth, who will build there, as New Yorkers made their homes along the Palisades of the Hudson. Portland will take more of an inter est in the Hood Kiverv Valley. The opening of the road will create an in centive to own properly here, that the families of the city may have delight ful summer homes. While Hood Kiver should not tux itself to build the rond, it should ut least make an effort to open the route. Styles change. It used to be consid ered a breach of social etiquette to en tdi a liy. 'J he little pest, from time immemorial has been considered too filthy to be allowed even to come in contact with the lingers of milady or the hands of the working man. And today thu. 11 y is even looked upon with such utter horror and contempt thi.t everybody is swatting him. tint nimiy good movements are run into the ground, and now the radical fly killers, or the radical urgers of 11 y killing, are having the Hies that "swatters" kill counted. Children are being paid so much for the Hies they kill. Dr. Cal vin S. White, tho statu's health officer, is right in refusing to take part in a campaign that calls'for the counting of the flies. .Tench the young to swat the (lies, to be sure. Hut is it necessary to pay them for it? And certainly is it not ridiculous to have the children en gage in the dirty task of counting the dead Hies'' THE MOSlEli GROWERS HOLD ANNUAL MEETING Saturday was a red loiter day for the fruit growers ol Mosier district und 1!00 enthusiastic growers gathered to celtv Ig-uto the closing of a most success fill year in the history of the Mosier Fruit tirowers Association, ut its regular mi nimi meeting, according to a dispatch.
