There ia a promise of a large turpen tine industry in the west and south west, the raw product being supplied by the resinous gum of western yellow pine. German pencil manufacturers are looking to .California incense cedar for pencil wood. The establishment of a pencil iactory in aniorma is not improbable. More than 120 million board feet of timber was given away free by the government last year to settler and miners living in or near the national forestB. There are 16 maples in the United States, most of them being eastern species. The most valuable, not only because of the product or us sap out also of the lumber, is sugar maple. It has been demonstrated that over grazed stock ranges on the national forests can he brought back to use under a system of regulated grazing faster than if they are left unused. Summons. It is not in favor ot all the new theo ries of eovernment. legislation and taxation. It is not in favor of all the new'laws to regulate industries and business re lations. All new governmental schemes and functions require more officials and more taxation. Commerce must forever operate in open competition and under the law of supply and demand. Government ownership or govern ment control of industries amount to one and the same thing in the end. With two systems of legislation the people of Oregon are cursed with more laws than they can ever oDey. Oregon has laws enough to last a hundred years and is about a hundred veers ahead of its needs. We need more lands cleared and cul tivated, more industries and payrolls, and to get rid of a lot of premature legislation. Editor Glacier: A short time ago a committee from the West Fork Fruit Growers club called upon the county court to urge construction of a very important piece of road. ibis road is a part of the one peti tioned by D. I. Stone two years ago. The particular portion wanted by the Fruit Growers club starts at the west end of the bridge at Dee and runs south up the hill on an easy grade. When it is built it will no longer be necessary to go around the dangerously steep and unduly long road which at present is the only outlet lor a district that is rapidly coming to the front. In addition tolmaking an infinitely better grade the proposed road will cut off considerably over three-fourths of a mile. very truly yours. Luhr Jenten.
