Boy Scouts Create i Stir
Bystanders on the Btreet got a run
for their money last Friday night when
the Boy scouts took them in by
their first aid stunts. Scoutmaster
Harris had sent three scouts out to
make believe they were hurt in order
to test the ablities of his portege in
case of real accident. While drilling
on Oak street scout Ireland was dis
covered lying unconscious in the street
in front of Kinnaird s store, lhey
demonstrated the making of a litter
with staves and coats, and bore the
victim away to headquarters. So real
istic was the whole scene enacted that
many ran. and pushing their way
among the boys sought to be of assist
ance.
Further on in their march that night
Scout Clark was found with a broken
leg and taken home in a four handed
basket hy Scouts Sonnichsen and Lofts
Scout Bentley used the fireman's grip
in getting Scout Davidson, who had
sprained his ankle to suit the conven
ience of the troop, back to barracks
The boys have started their season s
work with renewed interest and have
planned a big gist of work for this
winter. A new patrol is about to be
organized and Mr. Harris would like to
enlist all boys Yi years of age and over
as soon as possible. Boys and tneir
parents are urged to see bim and ar
range to take advantage of this oppor
tuntty. (Joqtributeu, .. .

Here is what one of the best known
pple growers of the Pacific northwest
and, incidentally, his interests are I
north of the Columbia river had to
ay regarding Apple Day and the petty
inerences that are cropping out in
some quarters regarding the origin of
the apple day idea and the date best
suited for such an observance:
What do we who produce the mar
ketable apples of the northwest rare
bout what ind. vidua! or what state
rginated the idea of an apple day?
e ought to be above such paltry con-
iderationa. What interests us, as in
dividuals and as associated growers, is
the best means for marketing our pro
duct, and it ought to be clear to all
that there is nothing to he gained by
quarreling over non-essentials.
The Apple Day idea is a good one.
let the honor of its parentage go where
will, and in furthering of the scheme
make its observance general the
growers of the northwest ought to be
together as in other things.
A number of the growers and asso
ciates in my state are boosting for an
pple day in the spring. I hat, in my
opinion, is a mistake, the proponents
an apple day in the spring assume
that the market during the fall and
inter can take care of itself, with the
stimulus naturally afforded by tne
Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
nd that further nourishment ought to
be withheld until the patient about fin
ished, in the spring months, when or-
marly there is but a remnant of the
crop left unsold.
' Do they not know this fundamental
fact, that it is in the first quarter of
the shipping season that the bears are
busiest? It is then'that the buying in
terests in all the markets of the wot Id
are doing their utmost to get'prices
down to a level satisfactory to them
selves and keep them there.
In Uregon the idea seems to be
aining ground that if Apple Day is to
accomplish anything like the purpose
ntended it ought to come in the fall,
somewhere bewteen the first of Octo
ber and the first of December, and 1
believe that idea is well grounded. If
we can get some stimulus for the mar
et, some advertising for the apples of
the northwest, through the institution
f an apple day, it can best serve its
purpose in the fall or early winter. It
men, wnen tne nortnwesiern grow
ers nave thousands of cars of apples to
be moved, that the market needs lall
the stimulus that can be injected into
t. It is then, and not in the spring
months, that we are interested in the
establishment of season prices, and if
we can in a measurably satisfactory
way accomplish that end in the fall
and early winter the market in the
windup of the season can take care of
tself.
"November 18, the date established
for Apple Day in Oregon last year and
again announced for this year, is as
good a selection as could be made.
There is no occasion for any jealousy
n any quarter. In conclusion, let us
n all our boosting and advertising for
Apple Day not put out this poor pitiful
aonlcal: 'Let everybody on this day
eat an apple,--' but, instead, : 'Let
everybody on this day. for the general
good, buy and take home a box ol the
best fruit grown out of doors.

Mosier Man Invents Grader
(From the Mosier Bulletin)
Ed L. Howe, owner of "Lehowa,"
one ot the uest kept ana Dent paying
fruit orchards in the Mosier district,
and probably in any other district in
the west, is something ot an inventor
and an orignator of many ingenious de
vices which he has perfected and put
to practial use on his iarm. Une oi
tnese is an apple grader. The writer
had the privilege of inspecting this
"machine" recently, and it certainly
looks to be just what Mr. Howe claims
for it practical and economical, in
fact, that is the verdict of all the ap
ple growers who have inspected it, and
it is their intention to provide them
selves with the same kind. Mr. Howe
offers any one the plans and estimates
of cost, etc., and is glad to have the
grader inspected.
Mr. Howe says he got the founda
tion of his idea for the apple grader
from the Thomas L. Avery grader, at
Hood Kiver, but the rest of it he
worked out himself, and he considers it
superior to anything of the kind he has
seen. This grader consists of 14 sep
arate sections which, when placed to
gether, make a circle about eight feet
in diameter on the inside, within tne
circle is a table four feet in diameter,
on which the apples to be graded or
"sized" are placed as they are brought
from the orchard, in the two-loot
space, between tne round taoie ana tne
circle of sections stand four workmen,
who inspect, wipe and grade the apples
for size and quality.
