AUTO COMMITTEE TA
BOOS FAST DRIVING
Cooperating with the citv officials.
the automobile committee of the Com
mercial club has tabooed fast driving
I of automobiles in the city limits. The
following communication ties been is-
sued by the committee:
Attention haa been called to the
reckless manner in which some auto
mobile drivers have been driving their
cars since the new (lavements have
been opened to tratlic. The under
signed haa been asked by city vtlicials
to cooperate with them in the matter,
and it may be said that the committee
is in hearty sympathy with the admin
istration of the law if drivers will not
confine themselves to the speeds and
regulations woicn are set down in
present ordinances.
In a few wteks rain will make fast
driving on the pavements a very dan
gerous matter, both to pedestrians and
the drivers themselves.
Any injury arising from fast driving
win immeuiHieiy resuti in ine passing
of more stringent regulations govern
ing machines in the city limits, there
fore it is best that drivers regulate
these things themselves and not make
further laws necessary.
Attention is especially called to the
necessity of slowing down at comeis.
Last year the county was enriched
several hundred dollars as a result of
an excess speed over 2.) miles an hour
in the country, and the city has ex
pressed itself as much preferring
safety to the money.
Arrests cause bad feeling and ex
pense, and both are unnecessary re
sults.
Kespcctfully,
Automobile Committee,
Commercial Club.

A rattlesnake and his fiiend came
to town last week, and paid a visit to
the people residing on Oak street and
Cascade avenue. Landscape Gardener
McDowell, while working in the gar
den of C. G. Pratt, was astonished to
find his snakeship curled up enjoying a
nooze in the lettuce bed. Mr. Mc
Dowell gave the alarm, and frightened
the snake, which hurried away toward
a pile of wood on the vacant lot op
posite the Franz home on Tenth street.
Mr. McDowell and J. t.. YYcllahd, who
was superintending street work near
by, touched a match to the dry grass
that covered the lot, in an effort to
discover the snake. It was then that
they found the friend, and he was
chased into the wood pile.
The finding of the two huge rattlers
n that portion of the city has greatly
perturbed the tent dwellers, who, it is
said, may be seen removing their
couches and cats into mote subtantial
quarters than tents.
While hllntinc on the east slonn of
Mount Hood last week Alva Day and
K. Smith hnD'crpd a hnlicat. Between
Fall Creek and Sand Canyon. The an
imal measured four and a half feet
from its nose to the tip of its toes, and
it ia the intention of the hunters to
have the pelt tanned and made into a
rug.
Many local fishermen cast their flies
in vain last Sunday, and in fact, there
were few fish caught in Hood river on
that day. The water seemed to be too
milky and the hsh would not bite.
