MARIS TELLS CHILDREN
TO PREPARE EXHIBITS
N. C. Maris, who ia in charge of the
extension work of the Oreogn Argieul
tural College and who has been touring
the state in the interest of the school
children's fairs, sends the following
letter to those who desire to participate
in the fair:
"I hope you are all having a good
time during vacation, playing some,
working some, and reading some; and
not forgeting to prepare your exhibits
for the school fairs. Had you thought
about how soon they will be here?
Only a few short weeks now, and the
time will pass quickly. Procrastina
tion is said to be the thief of time. Do
not let it be the thief of those prizes
you have no doubt had your hearts set
on winning. It is so easy to waste
time and get slack in our habits, es
pecially during vacation. Everyone
ought really to set apart certain hours
each day for play, for work, and for
reading. You will be surprised how
much more you will accomplish.
"If you are raising garden stuff to
exhibit, do not neglcet it. The weeds
will keep growing these hot days just
the same, and if you do not keep them
hoed or pulled up they will rob your
pumpkins or potatoes of the moisture
they need, and they will not grow to
be prize winners. If you are raising
poultry, do not fail to feed the fowls
regularly and well and handle them
carefully so they will be gentle and in
good condition.
"If you expect to exhibit sewing
and win that sewing machine, gold
watch, or some other attractive prize,
you have no time to lose. If you
would win in the bread making con
test, you cannot practice too much.
Do not be afraid of soiling your hands
with the dough. It is no disgrace to
work, and horny hands are honorable.
Do not overlook the fact that the
railroads will carrv your exhibits to
and from the State Fair free of charge.
The children of no other state are so
generously treated by the railroads, so
far as we know. Do not fail to read
the rules and regulations in the State
Fair ptize list which tells you what
you have to do in order to get the free
rate.
"Some boy or girl who reads this
may say, "1 have to work hard all the
time and never have a vacation, and do
not have time to prepare anything for
the fair." I hope very few of you are
entirely deprived of a vacation, but as
to having to work hard, you really
ought to be thankful for that. Hard
work does not hurt you if you do not
chafe and worry about it. Our beBt
and greatest people have had to work
hard. Surmounting difficulties brings
out the best that is in you, and devel
ops strength of character. The best
exhibits at the school fairs last year
were generally made by chilrden who
had to work hard. Loafers do not win
prizes at fairs nor in the battles of
life.
"Perhaps you are not yet acquainted
with Mr. Churchill, our new State Su
perintendent, but you will have an op-
Fortunity to met him some day, I hope,
am sure you will like him; he says
he is very much interested in the boys
and girls of Oregon, and especially in
seeing them learn the practical things
of life. He is anxious to see definite
results from the Industrial Depart
ment. It is up to you to show such
results, boys and girls, and I am sure
you will do your part."

Most Valuable Fruit Tree
What is probably the most valuable
tree in the world is an alligator-pear
tree at Whittier, Cal., which netted its
owner a profit of 43,206 on one year.
This tree was planted in 1905 and be
gan bearing in its fourth year. In 1912
it bore 3,000 pears which sold for
$1,500, while the sale of buds during
the same year amounted to $1,706,
making the total given above. The
tree is a seedling, the seed having been
planted with a quantity of other seed
which had been imported, presumably
from Mexico. Another tree which was
planted at the same time, and which
stands close to this phenomenal bearer,
has never borne more than 50 pears in
a season. Pictures of the tree and
some of its fruit appear in the Septem
ber Popular Mechanics Magazine.
IX HARMONY WITH NATURE
Will Q. Richmond, Inglewcod, Calif.,
says he will be glad to answer any in
quiries regarding the benefit he had
from using Foley s Honey and Tar Com
pound. "It has also greatly benefited
me for bronchial trouble and" cough, and
acts so well in harmony with nature, it
is more like a food than medicine." For
sale by Chas. N. Clarke.

Charles L. Wheeler says that Port
land fishermen, who have recently
fished in the logged regions of the
Scappoose region, have caught nice
numbers of fish but that you can get a
rise out of any of them by the mere
mention of their outings. The cause
of the tmuble is the huge horse nettles
that grow profusely and luxuriiintly in
that community. The fishermen wade
through them and on their way to the
streams, and before the first fish is
hooked begin to feel the effects of
them. J he nettles cause great welts
to rise upon the skin and the itching
makes a man think of the torments
that old time exhorters used to talk of
in their sermons to the wicked.
Fish Commissioner Kellv tells a cnnrl
one of an old Irishman employed by
nis lumoer company on the Mackenzie
river. The gray timber wolves are
said to be rather numerous in the Mac
kenize district, and the flr
creatures become so bold on occasions
as to give chare to men. The Irishman
was rafting some logs in the river,
when he looked up and saw a wolf
sniffing at his tracks.
"Oho!" he said, "and so it's thracks
you're afther? Well, and Oi'll just be
stheppin you off a few."
Dr. E. D. Kanaga, Ernest C. Smith
and J. W. Crites, who had been spend
ing the week in the Indian Mountain
district hui.ting, returned to the city
the latter part of lat wek with a
fine buck. Mr. Critea had a novel ex
perience while on the way to the
woods. He wis to have mtt Mr.
Smith and Dr. Kanaga at D, the two
motoring out from the city in tha lat
ter's automobile. However, they had
a break down and had to teltphgn U
the city for L. C. Foust, who took
thm to their destination in his Royal
Tourist. They made inquiries at Det,
and were told that Mr. Crites had gone
ahead, having become tired of waiting.
However he was not picked up on the
road, and it was thought that he would
be found at Camp Minnehaha, where
the Bakers nave spent the summer in
camp.
The party was at a loss to know
what had become of the lost hunter.
On the return to the city those in the
Royal Tourist found him sleeping be
side a roadside camp fire. They sup
pose that he must tfave taken some
short cut and thus missed hearing the
machine. Mr. Crites was awakened,
and walked into Camp Minneha. 1

One of the most enthusiastic fisher
men of the community is Arnold, the
young son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A.
Mitchell, Mr. Mitchell having recently
become interested in the Hood River
Banking & Trust Co. here. He has
caught the real spell of the angler,
and goes to the pools optimistic. And
though he returns empty handed, it is
always with the hope that the next
time will prove more successful.
Clarence F. Gilbert, accompanied by
his mother, Mrs. May Gilbert, and his
sister, Mrs. Fred Shoemaker, of Seat

is spending this week on the Metolius
fishing. He motored through the Cen

BASE BALL
Clerks Win Two Sunday Games
The Clerks' Baseball team is con
tinuing to gather laurels. They walked
away Sunday morning with the newly
grown scalp of the Business Men and
in the afternoon trimmed the Pine
Grove team. The morning game was
a walk away for the boys, the score
ending 12 to 6 in their favor. How
ever, the Pine Grove team made them
play faster ball, in order to hold their
own. The score in the afternoon game
was 6 to 5 in the Clerks favor. Wood
and Shimmerhorn formed the after
noon battery for the Clerks. In the
morning L. Carson pitched and McEl
roy caught. "Bill" Hall was drafted
by Pine Grove and Paasch caught for
the East Siders. The Pine Grove lads
succeeded twice in getting men to sec
ond base with no outs against them,
but seemed to play in hard luck and
were unable to bring them in. The
Businessmen's battery was formed by
Heppner and Fuller.
Fred Askew umpired the game.
