UPPER VALLEY HOME
One of the finest of the Upper Valley
homes is that of C. P. Johansen, who
recently came to the region from The
Dalle and began to clear the land of
an orchard tract there. Mr. Johansen
already has a large acreage cleared and
set to trees and this year is clearing 15
acrea additional.
The new home constructed by Mr.
Johansen on his excellent orchard
place, is one of the most commodious
and convenient in the Upper Valley, or
the Hood Kiver valley for that matter.
It has all modern conveniences with
running water and steam heat in all
the rooms. The owner is now mnking
improvements on his grounds. He has
a large tract of strawberries and is a
heavy shipper of this luscious fruit
from the Upper Valley district.
UNDERWOOD.
Roy Ballard, of Seattle, who is one
of the owners of a large orchard here,
will erect a modern six room residence,
Chas. Graves being the contractor.

Strawberry picking in this section
began Monday.
Mrs. C. M. Vinton entertained the
Heights Music Study club at her home
Satutday evening. A very enjoyable
time was had.

River Wednesday to attend the dance
given by St. Mark's Guild, and was
also piesent at the Tennis club finals
Friday.
' Some good work has been done on
the road between the Underwood school
house and the Reebe hill, it having
been widened and graveled.

more strawberries this spring, making
ten acres in all.

(rrom the Kuterprlse)
C. C. Hutchins recently took a pic
ture of Mount Hood from the top of
the Hutchins garage, a distance of
nearly 40 miles. It is a beautiful pic
ture of the famous mountain and
speaks well for the clear atmosphere
ot this section.
While in Portland this week Man
ager Conger, of the White Salmon
Fruit Union, made arrangements to
furnish all dining cars of the North
Bank road with White Salmon straw
berries this season.
Frank Depue and Miss Mary Gibson
were married at Vancouver Tuesday of
this week, and will be at home to their
friends after June 15 in White Salmon.

known here and have a large number

0. R. Ball, manager of the American
Type Founders Co., of Portland, re
turned home Monday from a short visit
with his wife, who is visiting her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ahrens, near Hu
sum. Mr. Ball is a firm believer in
the fruit industry and sees a great fu
ture for White Salmon. "Bound to be
a second Hood River," said Mr. Ball,
"and I consider White Salmon orchard
proprety a mighty good investment."
Berry Pickers Scarce
Berry pickers have been scarcer this
year than on any former year, the
number of Indians that has come over
from the Yakima and Warm Springs
reservations being comparatively small
and but few families from Portland
and the Willamette valley having ar
rived. The Portland and Willamette
pickers usually come by way of river
steamers. These however, have been 1
cut off by the high water at the Cas-
cades.
Albert Crocker spent Monday in
Portland placing advertisements in the
daily newspapers and interviewing em-
ployment agencies in an effort to have .
men and women come here as soon as ;
possible. j

Children's Sunday
It may not be generally known that
the Universalist church was the orig
inator of'this annual gathering of little
ones, which indeed is a beautiful cus
tom. What month in all the year is
more suitable for this demonstration
than June, the month of roses? The
many good things that can be said on
this day should not be withheld. Talks
in simple language on sobriety, honesty
and purity can be brought to a child's
comprehension and in this way make
paths straighter for their feet to tread
as they approach manhood and woman
hood. We cannot do too much for the
children. Precept and example are
both needed to perfect the work God
has given us to do, and thus honor our
great leader who has said, "Suffer lit
tle children to come unto me and for
bid them not, for of such is the king
dom of heaven." Communicated.
The woman of today who has good
health, good temper, good sense, bright
eyes and a lovely complexion, the result
of correct living and good digention, wins
the admiration of the world. If your
digestion is faulty Chamberlain's Stom
ach and Liver Tablets will correct it.
