RANCH Parkdale I'ppor Hood River Valley GROWER CRITICIZES POORNESS OF PACK Hood River, Ore., 3-23-13. " Editor of the Glacier: In s recer.t Issue, a ahort article appeared, "Com missioners Find Had Applet," which it certainly most interesting reading in the light cf recent eventa in our coun ty. It hardly aeemi post i lie that they found any Hood Kiver apples in Port land that were bad. Put of still greater interest is why they hould de sire to buy this particular box of fun gus fruit. It is barely possible, judging from recent occurnces, that they desired to have a souvenir of a now supposedly extinct orchacrd pest; or maybe to present an object lesson to all fruit inspectors in the future who are der elrct in their duties, or more valuable still to form tne nucleus of a museum of predatory insects and pets that pes tered the apple growers of Hood River valley in 1913 H. C. At any rate, we taxpayers ought to know why they wanted to possess this particular box of infested fruit. Un less a reason is advanced, we shall ex pect a jury of amiable personalities to declare the salaries of said county court null and void during the time spent in bartering for a worse than worthless box of infested fruit when they should have been engaged in pre venting scores of similar boxes leaving the valley. 'Tis true we-want to get rid of the infested fruit, at least some of us, even though we opposed every effort of our once constituted authoritity preventing the continuous production of infested fruit all for the sake of a few paltry dollars economically invested in expert advice. It is all the more surprisng, when we must remember that only last Wednesday the IlooU Kiver apple grow ers in mass meeting voted to undertake the incorporation of a business controll ing over a quarter of a million dollars worth of property which business de pends for its success upon the complete eradication kof every form of orchard pest. Ouite recently, an authority on (he apple industry in our valley publicly said, in referring to our present facili ties for rigid fruit inspection, "We have been sitting round like a lot of 'woodin Injuns.' " He might well have said, "Many of us are either fools or knaves." And between dealing with the two I take the knave. rellow Fruit Growers! isn't it about time we were ceasing that bitr noise outisda the valley about perfect fruit and doing inside little or much, as indi vidual ciscB demand, by compelling owners to clean up or grub up their in fested trees.' Why should any orchard ist be allowed to harbor these death dealing pests across the fence any more than to allow him to walk abroad when his family is a (Hided with the small pox? There isn't any, other than our cupidity of the "woodin Injun" type. We will get an experiment Btation but what about the interval now exist ing when everybody is a law unto him self? An emergency, a crisis, has arisen, but our boasted production of perfect fruit is a mockery so lung sa we allow selfish interests to interfere. We are like the fellow who bought a pocket book and had nothing to put into it. The present idea seems to be to advertise the glories of Hood River while calmly smiling at the dishonest methods of influential growers and tak ing the successes of the older orchard ists as a criterion, as well aa, their oTteTf ' pemiaMnt'aTpmgn8 agahwkM.OOO Persons publicly Recommend Our wio cmiHiniiuy njuruuaiuK mruum ui nests, fungi, etc. The result-earnest desire to buy I box of fungus anples. Yours truly, Jas. K. Eorden. Communication Editor Glacier: I noticed the article in the Odell items of the (iliicier of week before last in regard to the acoi dent occuring on the school grounds at Odell, when Irwin Heft hud his arm broken by playing blackmail with the older boys. 1 am very sorry the accident ocouired and hope the boy will improve rapidly without any ill effects, hut deplore the fact tlmt one boy should lie blamed and criticized as he was, as we are satisfied it was purely accidental, and the toy who is bluined is as sorry as anyone that the accident should have occurred. 'lhere might be room for a division of opinion as to whether the boy should be punished or not, although 1 believe the general sentiment tends to regard the occurrence as a pure accident. Hut there is no question about the uncalled for injustice of censuring the hid in u public newspaper which reaches the eyes of thousands of people who nre in no way concerned. E. T. tolls. CONCRETE CONCERN SEES GOOD SEASON Arln Pradley, of the Bradley Bros. Tile & Concrete Block works, sees a profptr"J3 year ahead for this indus try. The concrete block factory is in a secluded place on Taylor street, and hut few people know that there is a large sracc tnere tnBt '8 covered witn blocks and tiles of all shapes and sizes being Hired and made resdy for use. When the concrete concern is working at full blast, it employs five men. "Our orders are all the time increas ing," Miya Mr. Pradley, "and the past month has been the best we have ever had so early in the season. We have already suld 'idO worth of tiles and blocks this month." The gravel used in the manufacture of the blocks is secured from a pit in a hillside back of the factory. The sand is hauled from the bar on the Co lumbia. Experts who have been here to inspect the plant declare that no better sand and gravel can be found in the state. Sailer Trio Pleases Audiences The prurgams rendered by the Salter Trio, who were presented here last Thursday and Friday evening at the Electric Theatre, were decidedly pleas ing. The three clever young ladies gave delightful entertainments. Espec ially are their songs good, when their three voices mingle together. But all of their numbers were good and were appreciated. The concert grew better toward the end and the audience seem ed to regret that the program was ended. Miss Florence Eugenia Salter is a violinis'te and second soprano. Especi ally did she pleasethe audience with her instrumental selections. Miss Alice May Lund, contralto, sang some old southern songs. Miss Irusa Beryl Shumway has a very sweet first so prano voice that captivates her audi ences. The Salter Trio, while the local audi ence appreciated the program rendered, would go far in winning greater praise if the program consisted to a greater extent of short, spicy selections, in stead of too many longer and more Ber ious ones. Neighbors Note Factory Slogan The Hood River Commercial club has started a vigorous and fighting cam paign for factories. Its slogan is "More Factories," and its efforts have met with some success. Factories are what helps towns become cities and cities become larger.
