No man ever regrets the practice he get. in hii younger days in the art of public speaking. No one can ever tell when the occasion may arise wnen he will be called on to deliver a public address And no embarastnient is greater thai that caused bv a sudden summons to one, who is unaccustomed to such o'ut iea. to set forth his ideas in a speech in a public gathering. Mr. Crites is teaching his riuuila to think on their feet and how to express themselves in a wav that will impress their hearers and convey to them their thought in clear, concise manner. The students are finding the work thus performed more interesting. The dry phrases of economics dissertations have taken on a new charm. They aie gathering a useful knowledge and learning the valuable lessons of self confidence. Ilut they want to rcmem ber, that, when they learn to express themselves before their fellow men and women without fear, their express ions should be brief and concise. Aluny good speakers detract from their strength and power by talking too much. THE SCHOOL FAIR PRIZES It seems that some misunderstanding arose over the school fair prizes last year. Some of the recipients of the premiums awarded by the merchants supposed that they had the option of taking the prize or its money valua tion. This is not so, however. The merchants, who contribute to the premium lists and thus make it possi ble for numerousa wards, usually set down the money valuation of their con tribution, but they do not mean that they will give money instead. We heard of one instance last year, where or.a of the premium winners asked the merchants for cash, instead of the merchanise, that a bicycle niighijjbe bought from a mail order house with the proceeds. Naturally, this did not sound the most pleasing to the merchants to whom the request was made. The con testants, who make such demand of the contributors of prizes, are taking an unjust advantage of them. And, view ing auch circumstances, wo might well wish that the premiums of the fairs consisted of no more than ribbons. The boy and girl who would really benefit by the fairs, would work just as hard to win recognition and the premium of the emblem of merit, the ribbon, as fur the small merchandise or caah prize, and the contestant who would work for the mere premiums and not because of the benefits of the contest would be eliminated.
