PHONE 62 X Shively & Driscoll Mr, mm TIOOD RIVER fil - BAKER PRAISES PAISLFY PROJECT "It was very much of surprise to me," says W. J. Baker, who returned last Thursday from Paisley, where he naa gone to inspect the lands o tiered there by tne Northwest Towusite Co. The lands are just as they are repre sented in the literature put out by the company. Because of the effect of the hct lake there the climate is surpris ingly mild. The chief engineer of the company told me that during the year's time he had spent there he bad seen 350 days of beautiful sunshine. "A large compnay, composed of New York men, is putting- in a large sods works on Summer lake. They are in stalling their evaporators, and the peo ple feel that it will not be long until a railroad taps the fertile disrict." I'aisley is 150 miles south of Bend on Summer lake. The closest railroad station at present is Lakeview, forty miles away. Mr. Baker made the trip from Bend to Paisley by automobile. "When we get our automobile road opened up fiom here to The Dalles and up the Deschutes," he says, "as far as that portion of the road between Bend and Summer lake is concerned, I can vouch that it will be one continual joy ride." Mr. Baker, who has taken the local agency for the company, receieved the following communicHtion from Geo. M. Bailey, president of the Northwest Townsite Co., after his return here: "We are willing that each investor who does not go down to Paisley and who takes your word for conditions of thing's to recieve from you a written agreement that if he visits the prop erty at any time before the second payment is due and finds conditions different from those represented in our printed literature and advertised mat ter, that we will refund his money. All of our printed matter, including our subscription argeement and con tracts, were submitted to the Desert Land Board before they were issued, and we are woiking in direct and per fect harmony with the state authori ties. This is the first Cary Act pro ject inaugurated in the state of Oregon in which the settlers are receiving a 'square deal.' " SUMMER TOURIST RATES DECLARED Summer tourist fares to Pacific coast points and return during llJ13 were placed on the same basis as prevailed last year, at a meeting of the Trans continental Passenger Assocation held in Chicago last week. These. rates go into effect about June 1, and Portland is one of the first cities on the coast to receive a direct benefit from the lower fares, for the reason that the annual rose festival, one of the big tourist attractions of the coast, is held shortly after the rates take effect, the next festival dates being June 9-14. The railroads make the best possible use of this as an adver tising feature for the eastern pleasure seekers to come to the coast early in the summer and stay as long as they can. Easterners can buy these round trip tickets any day from June 1 to Sep tember 30, and they have a return limit invariably fixed at Octouer 31. The transcontinental lines are usually gen erous in allowing'.stop over privileges in either direction in what is known as the "general western territory." Besides Chicago, Milwaukee and Pe oria will have the $72.50 round trip rate; St. Louis has a $70 rate; St. Paul, Minneapolis, Duluth, Kansas City, Omaha and Sioux City a $ti0 rate and Denver, Colorado Springs and Pu eblo a $55 rate. A choice of routes, in either direc tion, is permitted under the terms of the summer tourist rate schedule. DIVIDEND DECLARED BY LOCAL UNION Last week the stockholders of the Apple Growers' Union received checks in payment for the deferred dividend. In the letter enclosed to the stock holders attention of the growers was called to the reasonably good market that had been found for the lower and cooking grades of apples. The union will handle potato shipments this year. However, growers are advised to con fer with the management before mak ing deliveries. The potato market, which is going through a process of changes, is said to be a little weak at present. Fruit Rates Ordered Cut The Interstate Commerce Commis sion has held unreasonable existing rates on friuts and vegetables from Louisiana and Teaxs points; on apples and other deciduous fruits from Ore gon, Utah and Idaho, and on citrus and deciduous fruits, canned goods and vegetables from Califoria points to Crawford, Nebr., and other middle west destinations, says a dispatch from Washington. The commission ordered an average of approximately 20 per cent reduction in rates, the reduced rates to come in effect about two years from February 1, next. Intoxicated Man Gives Trouble While under the influence of liquor last Friday night a man giving the name of Fred Williams gave tne offi cers of the east bound Soo-Spukane so much trouble that they wired to Mar shall liobert T. Lewis, who met the train and placed the man under arrest. Williams had no money on his person, but had a ticket for Spokane. Ha was raving and wanted to fight every one on the car. Railway special officers came here for him Saturday and took him to Portland.
