and Mrs. CtW. Parker, "Little Boy
Ranch," at Mitchell' Point west cf
here was for week recently xne
abode of tramps, one of the chief thor
oughfares of whom is the track of the
O.-W. R. & N. Co, parsing near tho
home. Mr. and Mrs. Parker, who are
spending the winter in Canada, left
the house in charge of a young man
who attended to the cows and chickens
and kept the gardens. Several weeks
ago the young fallow, deciding that he
needed a vacation, placed his father in '
the position of custodian. Unfortun
ately the change took place near the
equinoctial period, when the older man
simply can't resist a good long spree.
No sooner had the son departed than
he secured the necessary stimulus for
a period of joy. The cows and chick
en worn furpntten. He needed the
presence of human beings to make the
most of his gool cheer, ana an strag
gling hoboes were invited to join him.
"The place is yours," he would cry
with a flourish, as some newcomer
would join him. The fame of the new
found resort spread up and down the
railroad and by the week end the
house was full of the Weary Willie ,
lodgers. 1

entertainments of the old caretaker, a
council was held and it was decided to
beat a hasty retreat. The old man
thought it best for him not to be left
alone. So the "Hoboes' Haven" was j

"Every kind of business seems to be ;
booming in the east," says J. H. rred

Co., who returned last Thursday from
an extended tour of the United States.
Mr. Fredricy was as far east as Port-
and. Me., and went south to Lynch
burg, Va. "All factories, both large
and small are running full time. The
presidential campaign seems not to
have affected the commercial end of
the county in the least. The weather
was very good all the time X was on
the Atlantic coast. There were fre
quent showers and it was cool.
"Crops in all sections mat I visuea
were good, except in Oklahoma, where
droughts had cut the wheat and corn
production to almost nothing. Mr.
Fredricy on his return west stopped a
while at Kansas points and visited
relatives. While in Virginia, he vis
ited the battlefield of Gettysburg.
The government has spent much
money in beautifying the historic
Bpot, he says.

ACCIDENTAL SHOT
KILLS DALLES BOY
Wilson Kinnersley. aged 15, of The
Dalles, was instantly killed Sunday by
the discharge of a shotgun, says a dispatch.
With two companions, Koger wii-
helm and Clark Wallace, Kinnersley
was returning from hunting, and about
a mile from town stepped into a boat
on the slough to row home. In enter
ing the boat he dropped the gun, when
both charges exploded ai d enterid the
boy s chest.
Young Kinnersley 3 companions
brought'the body to town. The b y is
survived by a widowed mother and two
brothers.
J. V. Lucas, of this city, is a friend
of the dead lad's family, having
boarded with young Kinnersley's
mother when he was a resident of The
Dalles. He and Mrs. Lucas visited
the family last week, when they were
at The Dulles for the Barrett reunion.
They left Monday nieht to be present
for the funeral services.
Delightful Hallowe'en Dance
One of the most delightful dances of
the season was that given Friday ever-
ing at the home of Miss Hazel ;Holler
beck in the Frankton district, by a
number of the young ladies of the city
and valley. The new home was beauti
fully decorated with carved pumpkins,
ears of corn made to represent long
haired witches, freak shaped squashes
parading as chickens, potato pigs and
apples with carved and painted mim
icking faces.
The ceiling and windows were hung
with vari-colored maple leaves and
from among those hanging from the
beams glowed tiny, twinkling red,
green and purple electric bulbs. 'And
the music for the affair was exquisite.
Hans Hoerlein and William Chandler
were seized with the Hallowe'en spirit
and never have they played better.
Cider was served throghout the even
ing and at midnight the guests feasted
on a delicious two course luncheon of
sandwiches, chicken salad, little pump
kin pies and coffee.
The hostesses were: Miss Hollen
beck, Miss Furrow, the Misses Bragg,
Miss.Pifer, Miss Vannett, Miss Kelsay.
Miss Hershner and Miss Kinnaird.

Citizens Mass Meetings
Two mass meetings of citizens were
held Sunday evening underthe auspices
of the Home Protective association, orre
at the Riverside Congregational church
nd the other at the Heights Baptist
church. Addresses were delivered by
Rector Edmund Tiew Simpson, Rev.
W. B. Young, Prof. L. B. Gibson, Rev.
J. R. Hargreaves and Rev. E. A. Har
ris and A. C. Staten. "The Saloon in
Hood River," was the question dis
cussed. McLaughlin Club Wins Game
Foot ball is becoming almost as pop
ular a sport here as baseball was in
the summer and early fall months.
Two teams have been fotmed by the
young men of the city .and the erst
wtiile baseball fans have developed a
tendency to visit Columbia Park Sun
day evenings and witness the games.
The local team played the McLaughlin
Amateur Athjetic club aggregation
here Sunday, the visitors winning by
a score of 7 to 2.
