R. Steele, of the Middle Valley, has produced a record yield of potatoes this year from an acre of ground on his ranch, that will make Home of the growers of garden truck sit up and take notice. LaHt May he planted an acre of potatoes of the Early Rose ami Garfield varieties on land that had heen in alfalfa for ten years. He irri gated them twice, and when he camo to dig them, found the hills had al most run together. He used a five gallon oil can to pick them uo in. and found that many a single hill filled the can. Very few of the spuds are le.ss than a foot long, and some of them weigh four pounds each. He secured a picture of a hill that, when laid out, measured five feet across. In fact, the potatoes were so thick in the ground that there was almost continuous dig ! ging from one hill to the other. The yield was 700 sacks. I Mr. Steele will pit them this winter, j if he can rent sullieicnt ground from ma neighbor, as he Oocb not have room enough on his own place. To verify the story, C. H. Spruat and C. R. Hon'u will go out this week and investigatu it. Mr. Steele is so well pleased with the yield of potatoes this year that ho will plant about thirty acres next year. If the yield is as heavy next year on me entire held, it will be necessary i to build a railroad up Neul Creek to , haul them out. j In addition to growing record pota to,.,, Mr. Steele has cabbage that I weigh as much as 2S pounds, anil other ' line garden truck. i T he Middle Valley has shown much ' improvement the past year. Older trees that have come into bearing become so badly weakened in a season or two that they do not produce marketable fruit. These badly weakened trees recover slowly alter the scale has been eradicated so that the effect of the in jury is longer lasting than the period of infestation. The size of an individ ual scale seldom exceeds the size of the head of a common pin. An attempt is being made to call the attention of the growers of all kinds of tree fruits to a few facts about this scale among which is the recent spread in some oNirds where a light infesta tion was overlooked last year with the results that marked proof of it work can now be had. In apply ing the epray a pressure of at least 250 pounds should be maintained and every portion of the tree sprayed at close rango so that every crevice in the tree is tilled and every scale ia coated with the spray. A thorough application of the same strength lime-sulphur must be made tne following spring just as the buds begin to swell. The work must be thorough so that every scale is coated or the results will be poor bummer spraying as the young are crawling is also advisable. An appli cation of black leaf 40 and whaleoil soap will kill the creeping form. This spraying is important since the creep ing terms do not have as great oppor tunity to crawl upon the feet of birds, insects, persons working in the or chard, ttj., which are the usual meth eds of distribution.
