deed, to the people or Oregon this
should be for the time being the only
road thought of. It will not only be a
local route between the t astern part of
the state and the metropolis, Portland,
but it will form a part of both a trans
continental route and one from north
to south.
On the Atlantic coast is also heard
the cry of autoista for transstate high
ways. The following dispatch tells of
a proposed road from Montreal to
Miami:

"The association baa been hard at
work for several months. Its latest
measure has been to formally chaperon

trip is now being completed for use in
the association's campaign.
"Originally it had been intended to
explore the route with a party of four
cars. This quartet left Miami together
June 19, but found terrific going as
soon aa Palm Beach had been passed.
Record rains had flooded the Florida
swamps and the bog holes were almost
impassible to heavy, high powered
cars. Singly three of them gave up
the battle, one only continuing. This
was a Studebaker 20, owned and driven
by C. J. Martin, a Miami real estate
dealer.
"Mr. Martin's car splashed along
steadily. At times the water was
above his running boards for miles at
a time. Fish wiggled along in the
wake of the car and alligators poked
out thier long snouts to watch the un
usual sight. At times shell roads gave
a pleasant variety, but not until south
em Georgia was reached did the going
show premanent improvement.'-

chine in commission for the transpor
tation of passengers. The new car is
lurge and handsome in build. It is

now, he feels that he is the kingfisher
of the Northwest. Indeed, a fellow
can feel that way having landed one of
tne strong fish.
However, the fihsing should be bet
ter now, since the state game warden.
W. L. Finley, has decided to keep the
streams well stocked. With a close
observation of the game and fish laws,
it should not be so very long untill
good sport may be had in the lower
stream of the Hood river.

The experience of mountain climbers I
in electrical storms on the peak of
Mount Hood this sumnire recalls to J.
H. Fredricy a trip taken by him and a
number of companions up Pike's Peak
in Colorado. "We were on a hunting
trip in that state," he says, "and de
cided -we would climb the peak before
returning to our homes. It was before
the day of the railroad leading to the
top, or we would probably have made
the ascont in that easy fashion. All
went well until we started down the
mountain, when one of those sudden
hail storms arose. Gee. how the wind
did whisitle and the thunder did roll.
We hurried to the protection of an
overhanging ledge.or else I believo the
hailstones would have beaten us into a
jelly. They were bigger than base
balls, and the noise of their crashing
against the rocky sides of the mountain
made a roar like that of a hundred or
two devils beating on brass kettles, I
saw a digger squirrel caught in the
down pour of ice, and I think every
bone in his body was broken by the
hail. That experience has made me
shy of mountains ever since. I would
rather take mv outing on sore cool
brook, where I can sit beside the deep
pools and catch a fish now and then
without too great an exertion."
The record fishing at the Chautauqua
was done by G. A. McCurdy and W. L.
Nichols, who on Thursday went to
Sand Canyon, returning home in the
evening with their baskets loaded with
50 beautiful fish. They met several
friends and asked them to come by
their tents and see the SO fine traut
they had. Everybody thought some
joke was being sprung, knowing that
the fish had not been caught out of the
Middle Fork, which was very muddy,
and not thinking that they would have
journeyed so far as the Sand Canyon.

catch got out, and after a number- of
enthusiastic nimrods had really seen
the fish, these two gentlemen were
about the most popular fellows in
camp. . They were beeiged early the
next morning by all who carried along
their bait cans, and begged to act as
guides.
After a good healthy anooz they
finally took J. II. Heilbronner and
Chas. N. Clarke, over to the river and
on Friday this party landed 80 fish.
