I seemed a teacher who wa horn and educated la Florence and a member of a god fa in. Ilv there, to I coai he mre that 1 would get the languid lmre. Having only a few mouths for study In order to progress rapidly I deter mined to engnge an ItHllan maid. 1 advertised for one and received a num ber of replies. I called for several cf them to come to see me, aud after In specting them all I chose one calling herself Vlttorla. She told me her oth- nnf Inln... .1 .1 t.. er name, put I wa " uririeu m that. I chose Vlttorla because she seemed to be of so much higher grade than the others and because niy Italian teacher, after talking wllh her, told me that she spoke the language with tol erable correctness. Since this was all I wanted her for I decided to give her the position at once. Clarlsse. you know, Is my personal maid, who at tends me when I am making my toilet, does my hair and all that. Well, I found Vlttorla quite valuable to converse with. While I got noth ing from her of the construction of the language, the practice of talking with her advanced me more rapidly than my regular lessons. She poke French as well as Italian, and Bhe and Clarlsse became very good friends. You know how nice it Is to have servants who get on" well together. If they me nt swords' points one has no comfort. He sides they divided the work very well between theon. Vlttoria would have nothing to do with my toilet, and Clar lsse had no reason to fear that the Ital ian would become necessary to me. The arrangement suited me exactly. The friendship between Clarlsse and Vittoria seemed to be continually grow ing. It appeared that there must be some bond between them. 1 question ed Clarlsse about it, but got no satis faction. Then Clarisse begun to look worried. Again I tried to get out of her if there was anything on her mind, but she would not tell me. One day tried Vlttoria, asking her what was the matter with Clarlsse. She told me thut Cliuisso had. a lover. She had told her (VU(oriu) abuut bWand had Intro duced him to her. ' Vlttoria took a great dislike to hlin and advised Clar lsse to have nothing to do with him. Vittoria also asked me to say nothing to Clarisse about the Information she had given me, for Clarisse would cer tainly regard It as a betrayal of con fidence. This seemed to me a very satisfac tory explanation. Vittoria after hav ing informed me of Clarlsse's infatua tion aud that she was trying to induce her to give up an unworthy lover, made no effort to conceal their Interest in one another and once or twice they asked to have the same afternoon otf. This I granted, of course, wishing to give Vlttorla every opportunity to ar gue with Clarisse agninst yielding to a love that would likely turn out un fortunately. 1 suppose it was very selfish in me, but I have been so de pendant on Clarlsse for so long that to lose her through a marriage or from any other cause would break my heart. So matters drifted on. One after noon I returned from a bridge party and went to my room. It was Clu rlsse's afternoon out. A bureau drawer containing my jewels in use, which I kept always locked, stood open and the Jewels gone. Suspecting that bur glars had been In the house, 1 rushed to a closet where I kept an Iron box containing my most valuable gems. It. too, had been fitted. I called for Vlt torla. She did not reply. Great heav bus! What did It mean? My jewelB, worth many thousands of dollars, had been taken, and my Italian maid, who was expected to he close at hand when my French maid was abseut, did not answer when called. In the midst of my confusion Clarlsse came in. When I showed her my empty jewel boxes I thought she would faint. I was obliged to support her. She tried to say something to me, but her voice failed her. "Never mind, Clarlsse," I said sooth ingly. "I know what you would say. Vlttorla has turned out to be a thief. Bhe has deceived us both. She told lue that you had a lover who was un worthy of you and she was trylug to dissuade you from him." "She." repeated Clarlsse, covering her face with her hands. "Vittoria is a man.'' "Great heavens!" "He confided his secret to me; told me that for love of me he had dressed as a woman that he might be near me. 1 knew I was wrong to listen to him, lint I did. My faltb! What shall I 1o?" How women inny be hoodwinked by nfen. I don't care so much for the jewels, since I can buy those of later style, but I am no disappointed at loa Ing my practice tn speaking Italian.
