Mount Hood Remains Supreme.
Railroad Commissioner. Clyde B.
Aiichison, who scaled Mourlt Eagle Cap
in Wallowa county last week, reports
that his instruments only registered an
altitude of about 10,000 feet. Mount
Hood, which the eastern peak was said
to surpass in height, still remains
supreme in the state of Oregon.
Hood's altitude is 11,225 feet.
Mr. Aitchison suggests that Eagle
Cap be made the hub of a big national
parK.

Wilmer Siee general manager of
the Hood River'Apple Growen' Union,
who returned Friday fro tend;d
trip over the East and Middle West In
the interest of the organization, de
clare that he is we" pleased with the
prospects for the sale of the year
apple crop. "Considering the general
prosperity and the good marketing
conditions," gays Mr. Sieg. "I see no
reason why we should not be able to
make the year one of the best, if we
start out on the right marketing basis.
The prosperous condition is felt every
where. Fruit merchants feel it. In
deed, all the merchants do. There is
going to be a big corn crop, big wheat
crop and a good demand for steel.
Despite the fact that it ia a presi
dential year, money is not going to be
tight. The grower is going to find it
easy to move his crop. There ia an
optimism and buoyancy among all
classes, the farmer, the manufacturer
and the nierchint.
"The only bugbear that confonts us
is, that of indeh'nitcness. Apple men
are holding back for a while because
no price has yet Deen sei. rwnv oi
the later varieties of apples are being j
sold as yet, and prices will probably !
not te made before the middle of Sep
tember. The apple situation ia indefi
nite because many things can happen
before now and marketing time to the
eastern and middle western crop.
"Estimate made from data secured
show the actual increase of barreled
apples in the United States and Canada
to be three and one half million. The
actual increase of box apples is placed
at ten million. The total product for
the two countries for last year in
terma of barrels was 28,000,000, while
this year it is olaced at 40,000,000 bar
rels. Thus we have 12,000,000 barrels
more of fruit to dispose of than then.
However, with every marketing condi
tion looking so well and with the
general tone of prosperity prevailing,
I do not see why we should not receive
reasonable prices, if the right start is
made."
Mr. Sieg visited all the important
marketing centers. He declares that
the results of his trip are very satis
factory. "It was a necessary trip,"
he says, "for we want to worn on the
broadest Dossible distribution of the
fruit."
Mr. Sieg visited all of the principal
marketing centers of the east and
stopped at the larger cities of the
Middlewe8t. He stopped at the
National Shippers' Convention at Chi
cago, where he delivered an address.
Mrs. Sieg returned with Mr. Sieg
and they are now located at tha Hotel

Runaway Horse Plays Tag
A runaway horse starting from the
Apple Growers' Union here Wednesday
night of last week played "ring around
rosy" on Third, Oufc and Second streets
and Cascade avenue. The animal went
up Second street at an ordinary jog,
but by the time a score or more people
had yelled "Whoa" on Oak street, it
became frightened . and tore down
Fourth street with great momentum.
Striking Cascade it continued on down
grade to Second street and swerved up
toward Oak again. However, its mad
course was checked by William Baker,
who dashed in front of the animal and
siezed the reins.
