Numerous bucks are killed each year Dy local hunters in the range of hills west of the valley in the vicinity of tne ureen roint logging camps. As in past years many forest'hres have started because of the carJless- ness of hunters with relation to camp fires, the forestry department h 3 is sued a warning to hunters to lake all precaution possible and declares that should they not be observed the gover nor will be asked to issue a proclama tion declaring the season closed, the law on the subject provides: "When ever or wherever during an open sea son for the hunting of any kind of game in this state, it (hall appear to the governor upon the showing of the stute forester that by reason of ex treme drought the use of firearms or fire by hunters is liable to cause forest fires, he may by proclamation suspend the open season and make it a closed season for the shooting of wild birds or animals of any kind for such'time as he may designate, and during the time so designated all provisions of the lew relating to closed seasons for game shall be in force." Unless it becomes necessary it is not the intention of the state forester to enforce this provision, but should re ports indicate that hurters are the cause of forest fires he will at once ap peal to the governor to issue the proc lamation.- .""' One of the maddest scrambles that has been witnessed in the Hood Kiver vaiiey since the city wsg known as the Waucoma Indian lodge and the Red Skins used to scamper fter the young deer, was last Friday, when Forrest Moe gave chase to fawn on his father s ranch near Tucker's bridge. He and W. A. Lockman were working in the Moe orchard, when the little animal, with the cupidity natural to young beasts of its kind, came out of the underbrush of sn adjoining thicket and stood for a minute not over 20 feet away making a close inspection of the human animal. Mr. Moe was unable to resist chas ing the animal, which, however, soon lef him stranded in a clump of bushes at the creek bottom, Mr. Lo?knian declares that the race, while it Justed, was one of the best-he has ever had the pleasure of looking on. While a number of visitors stood on the banks watching him fish, Harry T. neWitt hooked a 31-inch steelhead salmon Sunday morning. His audience screamed with excitement, as the big fish made the spray fly as it dashed through the water in its mad efforts to free itself. The process of landing took about 30 minutes. Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Moe and Mr. and Mrs. F. 11. lilackman and families spent Sunday at the Devil's Punch Bowl fishing. Just Little Stones A Hood River Beau, who while he believes in making himself appear a modern Chesterfield, practices rigid economy. Indeed, the young man pol ishes his own Bhoea. Not so many days ago he found that he had left his can of tan paste open and that the effect of the air on the composition had made it so hard that he was unable to make use of it. A can of olive oil stood near on a kitchen shelf and with this he sof tened up the polish. As a result his shoes were nearly spoiled. His dignity was almost utterly ruined and he so lost control of himself alto gether that he uttered profane speech. This all happened after he landed at a party. The shoes looked fairly decent at first. However, after about two hours they took on a permanent ex pression similar to that of a yellow negro sick with the jaundice. They were rambling through the woods near Lost Luke. The little girl was delighted. She was juat from the east and had never been in the wilds of the west before. The big silver gray squirrels were very cute and the little chipmunks that reared them selves on fallen logs and barked at their passing were "Just the cutest things in the world." "Oh, I love it," she said, "I don't think I can ever go back home again. 1 hope papa gets a place out here." And then she and the young man walked on in silence down the natural vista of firs. Thinking it time to resume the con versation the young nun began telling a atory concerning lumberjacka. lie thought he was going to tell a story, but hardly had he mentioned the word lumberjack when all tne vivacity ofi the little visiting maid returned. "Lumberjack." that was a new word. but she muBt display her knoweldge' of the woods. "Why, I saw one of them the other night. One flew into the opening by the camphre. It looked something like a wood tick."
