Pishing is the ex cuse to take us to the wilds where we grow young again without knowing how or why. We don't need the fish to sustain life and beeMeak is cheaper when it comes to cold dollars and cents, but fishing gives us the excuse we crave to go to the wilderness and it keeps ua busy after we get there while we are unconsciously backing up to ward the savstjery oi the first days of humanity again and by eo doing we renew our Tease on life and health which is more important than all the business in the world. Therefore of wlmt use is it to try to beat back the still small voice of in stinct that clamors for a fishing trip when the sunny days bring the scent of the wild faces' to our wise nostrils even among the smoky streets of the city. Listen ! Can you hear the music of the foaming ranids yonder the song of fast water drooning back in a thousand echos from the grim canyon j walls? - Can you see the beryl green waters of the resting pool where the ferns mirror themselves in the crystal ; depths? ' And the smell of the damp woodsy ; earth- isn't it good? Can you pick out i the water smell, the pine smell, the ; earth smell and the scent of the ani nial trail where the little brothers of the woods travel up and down the j brawling stream.' Can you find each 1 of these odors on the river breeze as it ! flows down from the high peaks yon-! der, ozone burdened and carrying yet ! another odor, that is the smell of melt- J ing suow up there among the rock j spires? El Comancho, in the West- j erner. Oregon's most youthful huntress resides in Hood Kiver Valley. The young Diana is Miss Adrienne Epping, the 5-year old daughteraof J. A. Ep ping, who last week killed with the first shot a 3no -pound bear on the Me toliua river in central Oregon, where the Epping family hud gone on a fish ing excursion. 1 eddy Roosevelt was not prouder of the tusks from the biggest elephant he j shot in Africa than Miss Epping of the bear skin brought home as a trophy from the Metoilius excursion. On the morning of the adventure she was ac companying Don Heising, on whose ranch the party was camping, to his near traps. "We approached the ra vine where the traps were Bet," said Miss Epcinjrt "when we heard the grunts of a bear. 1 wasn't the least bit frighttned. Don said we'd better watch out, for the bear might not be well fastened. He told me to approach with him and kill the bear. 1 thought it would be the beat fun in the world, and whenwe got up in firing distance. with Mr. Hear rearing up and roaring, I aimed and got him the first shot. After 1 saw how easy it would have been for him to have pulled out his toenail and come after us 1 was the least bit scared." The bruin was put across a pack horse and taken to camp. "Dad" Kpping declares that the Me tolius for big fish is one of the finest regions in the world. "We caught all we could eat while there, he says, "and were all the time longing for new peopkjto come in so that we could catch some to give to them. One evening 1 went out and caught seven for supper. The biggest one was 17 inches long and the smallest 12 inches. Some fish, eh?" Mr. Epping states that the Heising ranch makes an excellent location for campers, and for those who do not en jo.y "roughing" it, Mr. Heising. who has a laiue ranch house, provides board and lodging for $1. "For a summer vacation trip," says Mr. Epping, "1 know of nothing that can surpass it." While we were there," said Mr. Ep ping, "we had the opportunity of see ing the sun rise over the plains country and of w itnessing the glorious picture it makes as it sets behind the western range of mountains, topped by Hood. It is glorious sight to watch the warn ing, 1 guess you'd call it that, of the sun rise. The first evidence one has of the coming day is of a straight, broad bolt of silvery light, piercing the east ern horizon. " ' "At evening the head of every one of the peaks in the west is crowned Jby a halo of gold, the central Oregon country nestled in the dim shadows of the mountains." Not only has one, who'visits the cen tral Oregon country, a chance to ..fish after the big fellows in the Metolius but, by a good automobile road, Sutter l ake may be Reached, and here, ac cording to Mr. Epping; enough Dolly Vitr loi ,s have their homes to give sport j to many fuiure generations. I he people of this region are inter- j ft. il in the completion of the Port- lam! iimxl !iver road, realizing; that it will increase the automobile traffic in to their region. . i exposed to the continued action of at 1 mospheric conditions and an abundance of moisture so that the change chemi ! cally, becoming more or less soluble, ! in which state the products are poison ous to foliage and, fruit, cause the leaves to drop off when the poisoning is very marked. Due to this spray i injury the O. A. 0. Department of Chemistry will cooperate with me in I attempting to solve the problem." Mount Hood Lillies Beautiful The beautiful Mount Hood lillies are the favorite flowers of tha Hood River people now. Many have grown the fragrant blossoms successfully in their gardens. However, the most beautiful specimens are to be found in the higher altitudes of the valley and those who visit those sections where they grow more profusely may be seen returning with great boquets of the blooms. The largest room is soon filled with the heavy perfume of the flowers, the petals of which are sometimes almost white, but most often'a delicate purple. W. J. Baker & Co.
