We print in another column this
week extracts of a letter from C. H.
Sproat, manager of the Apple Growers'
Union. As Mr. Sproat Bays in bin
communication to the ttocKholdcre of
the organization, the question of stor
age is the all important and vital one
now facing the Union.
The growers of the Valley have had
their minds occupied to a great extent
since the first of the yesr with the
consideration of co operation and the
investigation of the proposal made to
them by the Northwestern Exchange
Ihe investigations are over in so far
as co-operation through a partly profit
sharing agency is concerned and we
have found that we are not facing as
serious problems bs we thought we
were. Those who would have had us
enter the inner realms of the North
western Fruit Exchange would have
had us believe that we were facing
calamity and a crisis. But the Union
has been fchown to have had selling
machinery in every way as excellent
as that of the selling agency and
bringing in better returns.
Hut the btokholders of the Apple
(rowers' Union want to enable the
Union to continue its tlliicency. The
organization is acknowledged the lead
ing selling agency of its kind in the
Northwest, it is used as a pattern by
the country as a whole. Rut let's
don't throw bouquets at ournelves un
less we are willing to use our en
deavors to continue to increase its
strength and capacity to get results.
The organization now has every facil
ity but that of adequate storage and
shipping accomodations. It is abso
lutely necessiiry for the Union, in
order to realize the reasonable results
that you as growers are going to ex
pect this next year for your banner
yield of apples, to have a greatly in
creased home storage. Have you
thought over the matter? If you have
not, get busy. Have you merely given
it a trivial consideration, and have you
come to the conclusion that the storage
problem does not amount to anything?
If you arc in this lukewarm position,
you have leayoned from a fallacy, or
our investigations have not touched
bottom.
Tho apple crop this fall will be the
biggest the Valley has ever had. The
storage facilities were not adequate
year before last. The Union hail to
rush fruit to middle western and east
ern storage houses and the charge
made for the service ate no small holes
in the profits for the grower. With
adequate home storage the Union
would keep this money at home.
Money kept at huuie is not only a ben
efit to yourselves, as stockholders of
the Union, but it aids the finances and
commerce of the community as a
whole.
Serious results would follow a car
shortage. With the great million box
crop of apples rolling in and no place
to store them and no way to ship them
out, imagine tho chagrin that would
feel, if a largely increased Union stor
age house were nut here to receive the
apples.
Even with the present facilities and
cars in plentiful numbers, the crop is
going to roll in so fust this full that
with the present shipping facilities it
will be impossible to handle them
properly, carloads will go to pieces.
It will be found thai it will nut only
be necessary to ship to distant storage
but to consignment dealers, apples will
go to pieces, we will hear of request
for rebates, and we will have to grant
them. Markets will be glutted, t'ha
one conditions, will reign, ihe prices
we will receive will be unsatisfactory
in the extreme. The whole business
will have a re-iiclinnary effect. Grow
ers will feel blue, such results will
breed pessimism, newcomers with such
facts staring them in the lace will be
wary and the great imliislry of the
Hood River Valley will suffer.
All of these facts are unpleasant to
be thought of. If tliey were being
predicted, they would make us feel
blue air eady, but the intelligent or
chardists of the Hood River Valley will
not let them come to pass. '1 hey will
Hpply the preventative. Waiting ami
applying a remedy would niiike too
bitter an experience, and the Union
will have storage sullicieiit to bandit
the apple crop.

Col. Roosevelt, judging by the daily
press of the country and many of tin
foremost weekly periodicals, although
he has been considered one of the
shrewdest citizens and presidents the
country has ever had, has made a
serious mistake in announcing his can
didacy for the presidency for a third
term. In view of the statements mad
by Col. Roosevelt on several former
occasions, it seems to a great portion
of the public that he has broke!) faith
and is pursuing a course directly op
posed to his former preachings. With
such circumstances staring him in the
nice, unless ino lormer rough noer
president and hunter of big game, has
a strong band, with some trumps that
have not yet been exposed to the pub
lie, to uring inio play soon, lie is in
the predicament of having to make
explanations for his former attitude

Col. Roosevelt is a strong man,
courageous and has a great deal of
executive ability. He has more diplo
macy, too, than the average man in
the public eye. His straightforward
actions during the terms of his presi
dency created for him the world over a
great admiration. Men, who observed
him, thought him net only great
statesman, but wonderful politician,
and Col. Rooscvtlt wag the popular idol
of the American people. Indeed, it
seemed that hit success got the better
of him. He has always had a tendency
to be the biggest djck in whatever
puddle he happened to be. It
seemed to the American public that be
was trying to make too big a splash in
the world puddle, when he left Africa
after his hunting expedition and bigan
to hob nob with rulers of the old world
country. Indeed, it seems with the
opposition that Col. Roosevelt has
created with his recent annoucemei.t
and his abtruse way ot making it, that
he has created an impression that will
cause his popularity to wane rapidly.
There are many men, who have no
scruples against a third term president,
who have bad their suspicion an used
against Mr. Roosevelt because .f his
former statements, while others de
clare that, however much they might
admire him they would vote and sup
port no man for a third term, (helming
it against precedents set in early days
of the government and re-atfirmed
oftentimes since then. Still the
Colonel has a great many ardent ad
mirers. who can see no fault in bis
announcement, which to the many at
present looks like a contradiction, and
who assert that explanation can make
everything clear.
.Summing all up it seems that Col.
Roosevelt is going to fight against the
heaviest odds he has ever had confront
ing him. There is no doubt about him

to have remained otlt of the contest.

citizen of the country he could have
wielded a great influence. His recent
action will go far toward discrediting
any future stands of his, should the
re-action against him grow as every
present indication seems to forecast.
Strange things have been happening
during the past winter. While the
Middle West and East has been frozen
up, the report comes that Alaskans
have been enjoying an exceedingly
warm winter. A letter from Cordova
says that ice for household purposes
will have to be brought from distant
glaciers, because of the fact that the
waters of the adjoining lakes, which
usually freeze to a great thickness,
have been kept open becauso of the
warm days.
N. J. SINNOTT FOR CONGRESS.
The reports from different parts of
the state to the effect that N. J. Sin
nott, of The Dalles, is meeting with
success over the whole of the Second
Congressional district, should be grati
fying to the citizens of the city and
county of Hood River. Mr. Sinnott
has been in the public eye for a num
ber of years. He has made an enviable
name and reputation for himself in his
profession of the practice of the hiw.

Oregon. Mr. Sinnott has represented
Hood River and Wasco counties in the
State Senate. His record will stand
tho searchlight of investigation.
"Nick" Sinnott will represent tne
state of Oregon creditably. He is a
red blooded man with initiative anil
ability of execution. He can laugh
and crack a joke with the best of men,
but be can also do things. He is a
big, whole souled, square, Oregon cit
izen.

THE AdhPTANCK OF RUMORS.
All of us are too prone, when we
hear rumors, to allow them to mislead
us and to accept them as facts. It is
characteristic of too many of ns not to
he willing to make our own investiga
tion and to hearken to the words of
others. The example of the Oak Grove
apple growers, who to satisfy their
curiosities, while at the same time
getting at the methods of an institu
tion on which fori) number of years
the success of the Valley bus been
based, took a day olf and studied the
details of the management of the
Apple dowers' Union. We may say
with what at lirst thought tuny be a
just criticism that it is the business of
the I 'iiion to disseminate among its
growers the facts as to its methods.
This might be to the interest of the
Union management. ,Iust as other
rumors of a fault finding nature reach
growers' ears and are believed without
further consideration or investigation,
the statements of the management
might he first at hand and make the
first impression. Hut, as Mr. Sprout
suggests, if you want authentic facts,
secured by yourself or a self-appointed
source, go yourself or send a commit
tee of the growers of your district to
the Union to learn the facts from orig
inal records. Started, no one knows
where, but traveling with the rapidity,
almost, of the light ( f a star or the
rays of the sun, rumors, without basis,
are often the cause of harnitul agita
tion. It would be well for a I of us, in
the face of rumors, to adopt the traits
of character attiibuted to the citizens
of Missouri, and calmly tell the little
swift winged disturbers that we must
be shown.
It is hoped that the recent rumors
mentioned by the letter to the apple
growers will, in the face of investiga
tion, dart back to its starling point,
oblivion. The Union needs coo)er
tion and concerted action.
The management of the Union has
always shown itself ready to listen to
reason and suggestion. Criticisms
based on facts and legitimate argu
ment should receive their apt atten
tion.
In Spokane saloonmen have a rate
war and have tried to see which of
them could sell liquor ami beer the
cheapest. If the rate cutting sparring
of the barkeepers continues it would
not be surprising to see the lnl:o ,l
Empire city the goal for the thirsty of
little means.
E. E. Stanton, of Chicago, who has
for some tune owned 10 acres on the
west side, has purchased through C.
Y. Edwards & Co. the 10-acre ranch of
Joseph Copcland, which is located on
the west side. Mr. Stanton left yes
terday for Chicago to bring his family
here. He will make his home on the
Copcland place and finish improving
his other possessions.
Another sale of interest is that of
C. K. Marshall to Dr. E. E. Ferguson,
of The Dulles, whereby the latter
bought from Mr. Marshall nine acres
in the llelmont district. Dr. Ferguson
already owns several tracts of land
here and will make his home in the
valley.
IJQUOlf SOLICITOR
CREATES PROBLEM
A young man, who has heen solicit
ing orders here at various times during
the past three weeks for a I'ortland
liquor house has placed a problem
before the citty and county authorities.
1 he solicitor merely exploits the merits
of his goods. "Summer will soon be
here, he says, "and you will need a
case of beer." However, he will not
receive any money. The order which
he makes out is given to the patron to
be forwarded to the I'ortland firm.

Tift Boosts Hood River
Arthur I'. Tifts, a Portland attorney,
who is also an enthusiastic apple
grower, owning an orchard here was
with the Oregon delegation that se
lected the site for the Oregon buildH'.g
in San Francisco last week. At the
banquet Mr. Tift made the following
speech, which is clipped from the San
Francisco Examiner :
I "Up where I come from, Hood
Kiver, we can hardly wait for the
opening of the exposition. First, we
are interested iu the opening of the
I'linnum canal, because it will afford
us a means of shipping our wonderful
apples to the east and Europe at
greatly reduced rates. Secondly, we
want to show how we raise apples,
those big Spitzeiihergs and Newtown
I'ippins and a big space which we are
going to have in the Oregon building
will give us an opportunity to display
our industry."
Kay Announces Candidacy
Murray Kay has made his announce
ment as a candidate on the Republican
ticket for nomination and re-election
to the ollice of county surveyor. Mr.
Kay fur a number of years was with
the engneering corps of the Chicago &
Northwestern K. R. Co. Last sum
mer, when the county let bids for the
construction of the Neal creek bridge,
the bidding bridge companies' repre
sentatives stated that they had never
recieved a more concise set of specifi
cations from any county surveyor.
The specifications were accepted with
out a change.
Woman's Club Changes Date of Contest.
Hecause of the late spring, the mem
bers of the Woman's club have changed
the beginning date of the period dur
ing which the contestants in the lawn
beautification race will vie with each
other from March 15 to April 1.
