AVOID'TiARSiTDRUGS
Many Cathartics Tend to Cause Injury to
the Bowels
If you are subject to constipation,
you should avoid strong drugs and
cathartics. They only give temporary
relief and their reaction is harmful and
sometimes more annoying than consti
pation. They in no way effect a cure
and their tendency is to weaken the
already weak organs with which they
come in contact.
We honestly believe tnat wc have
the best constipation treatment ever
devised. Our faith in it is so strong
that we sell it on the positive guaran
tee that it shall not cost the user a cent
if it does not give entire satisfaction
and completely remedy constipation.
This preparation Js called Ki xall Or

NELSON TO MANAGE
EXPERIMENTAL FARM
Primarily to make a profitable busi
ness investment and incidentally with
the intention of damming the current
of money steadily flowing out of the
Pacitic Northwest for meat products
by establishing a demonstration farm
for the fattening of animals for food
purposes, which it is believed, will
make such a showing that similar
farms will spring up over a large tcr
ntory, a number of stockmen, horti
culturists, railway men and others
have formed a corporation and acquired
-tiit-.ihle lands, says Saturday evening's
Portland Telegram. It is to be known
as the Poi'tland-Goldemlale Farm Com
pany, and was formally organized at
a stockholder' meeting Friday night.
The company holds rights to !i0
acres in the heart of the Klickitat Val
ley, near Cioldendalc, Wash. Py the
plans is contemplated a farm to be
used as an experiment station for the
rearing and fattening of food animals,
scientific farming and demonstrations
in agriculture and horticulture. It will
he sowed largley in alfalfa and sume
grain. The land is under the Mountain
Lake Irrigation project, accessible for
commercial irrigation, and is of the
richest loam to tie found in the fert le
Klickitat Valley, the gateway to the
rich Yakima country. Kail way con
nections are convenient, with a water
eiade route to Portland, making this
city the outlet for all the products of
the farm, which is to be opened in the
immediate future.
The farm will be in charge of O. J.
Nelson, son-in-alw ol.E. L. Smith, the
noted Hood River horticulturist. It
was on the Hood River apple farms
that Mr. Nelson largely gained the
knowledge and experience which will
stand'him in good stead in the new
project. The ollictrs and directors of
the company are: President, V. M.
Plummer, secretary and treasurer of
the Portland Union Stockyards ; first
vice-president, J. L. Sterrett, manager
fo Sulzberger & Sons' Company ; sec

Diamonds From Sugar.
It win bo stated with perfect troth
that a lump of sugar muy be turned
into diamond Not all the substance
of the suur, of course, will enter luto
:i:e composition of the gem, but only
the carbon that It contains. Sugar
consists of cartnin united with oxygen
and hydrogen. The carbon can be
easily separated out, and In certain ex
periments for the production of dia
monds Mil sugar carbon has been em
ployed. The diamonds so produced
were, of course, very small and des
titute of commercial value, but still
they ore real diamonds, mid the
chemical result achieved would be no
greater Intrinsically If they were as
large ns the Kohlnonr. The hope has
often been held out that an improve
uieut in the process of manufacturing
diamonds may be effected whereby
the necessity of dissolving the carbon
lit molten Iron may be dispensed with,
and the required combination of great
pressure with great heat may be
brought about by some such opera
tion ns squeezing the carbon between
fed hot metal plates.
A Discouraged Sport.
This Is the snd story of one of the
most thoroughbred sports known to
the history of hazards. His name was
Sullivan, ami he had blue eyes and
red hair, with a brogue to match his
coloring. John Hays Hammond, the
mining engineer, met him In prison lu
South Africa at the time when Ham
mond and other prominent men were
held as captives by the lioers In con
nection with the Jameson raid. The
eugineer and the Irishman became
well acquainted.
"Probably you wonder why I'm
here," said Sullivan one day when the
thermometer had gone as high as 113
In the shade. "Well, I'll tell you. I
got Into a little trouble, and I pleaded
guilty to it.
" 'Five years!' said the Judge.
" 'Your honor,' I cried out, 'I'll throw
heads and tails with you to see wheth
er it shall be ten years or nothing.'
"And. would you believe It. Mr.
Hammond, that Judge got mad and
added on the five years anyhow. And
now I'm serving that extra five.
What's the use of being a sport?"
