THE STAR GROCERY 'Good Things to Eat" PERIGO & SON CHICAGOANS EAT OREGON APPLES Oregon, the grand commonwealth of the Northwest, wnich Chicagoana pic ture in their minds as a land of choice fruits, beautiful flowers, artistic bung alows, salmon and crawtith, was the entertainer at the Land Show laSt Thursday, and representatives of the state "made good ' in all respects. Eastern people who have never visit ed Oregon, but who Rained their im pressions from railroad folders, maga zine articles, the stones told by return ing travelers and by contact with act ual residents of Oregun, think the people there use nothing but gold coin of large denominations as a circulat ing medium and that they subsist chiefly upon fruit and fish. The eyes of these people were opened to therearpopsibilities , of Oregon by the display. The lectures on the re sources of the state were illustrated by moving pictures and proved enter taining and instructive. dovernor West had named J. H. O'Neill, of Portland, as his official representative, says a special dispatch to the Glacier. Tom Richardson was one &i the chief speakers. Among others were drover B. Simpson, super intendent of WelSs-Karso & Co.. in Chfcago, and a native son of Oregon ; J. E. Verree, Harry A. Wheeler, pres ident of the v'hicago Association of Commerce; George de Haven, Hallett W. Smith, of San Francisco: F. H. Graham and Professor A. E. Chamber- ain. All the talks were illustrated with fctereopticon pictures. A silk Oregon badge was pinned on every visitor to the Coliseum when he entered the show. "If Chicagoans were told about the size of Oregon they would hardly be lieve it. said Mr. Richardson. Ve have a state into which you could put half a dozen Eastern states, and it has some of the finest land in the world. the co-op- a spirit de veloped in every comunity that brings the people closer together, so that all work for the common good." Samples of fruit and flowers grown in Oregon were handed out in liberal quantities to the visitors. Some wags in the immense crowd desired to learn more of some of the politics peculiar to Oregon and why people living in such perfect environments selected such queer men to represent them in Washington and elsewhere, but the land promoters skillfully avoided all these embarrassing questions. They also put the soft pedal on all talk about crawfish being the chief diet of Portland folk, many visitors still re membering an article to that effect printed two or three years ago. Former residents of Oregon, now ex patriated for business reasons, made a pathetic picture as they lingered around the exhibit and told all visitors that no land could compare with Ore eon in anv respect. Oregon apples scored a big hit when visitors to the big land show at the Coliseum were each presented with one of the big luscious prize win ners by the oflicials of the Southern Pacific, The apples had been sent to the show by Oregon growers who were anxious that their fruit should be put into the mouth of any Chicagoans as it was possible to reach in ore day. 1 lie program of speeches und music which has been prepared was given in one of the Union Southern Paeillc halls. J E. O'Neill, acting as Governor West's personal representative and Tom Rich ardson of Portland, made the principal speeches and pounded home into the minds of their audience the act that Oregon is the best and fastest grow ing state in point of population and wealth per capita of any in the Union. The people of Oregon have erative habit. There is a Report of the Condition of I The First National Bank !
