Sandow'a Magaznc, which is devoted to the culture uf physical strength, says: "Let no man deceive himself about alcoholic drink". The man who drinks brandy, or Lei r, or whiskey, or wine, ought to bear in j mind that these drinks do not give i strength, but rather dissipate strength. There are a great many people who' believe that a moderate use of alcohol ; under proper circumstances coimiu-i-s to health and strength, makes good flesh, and builds up. Accrding to his assessments the taxable property of the county, ex cepting the property belonging to public service corporations amounts to !',H1 4,820. W hen the roll is completed and the corporations' property is added the amount will be swelltd to approxi mately twelve millions. More than half of the valuatin is that of the till able orchard land of the Valley, and the increase of a million dollars is due largely to the improvements of raw land with in the past year. One noteworthy fact in h oking over the tax list is that Hood River's live stock valuations cut but a small figure in the taxation. There are not 1.500 horses in the county, but (iS4 cattle and only t7 goats and sheep. Nor do Hood Kiver apple growers raise any great amount of swine. The number of hogs only reaches 131.
