The six hading producer of salt in 1910 were New orlc, Michi- ii. Ohio, Kansas, Louisiana, and California. Nearly 1 per cent or the salt consumed in the country wag ob tained from domestic sourcea, the United States having long been inde pendent of foreign production. iSa It is thoueht ol inosuy in connec tion with cooking and seasoning, but it has a great many other important applications. It is used largely in the preservation of rin anu meai, in ine ilairvinff imiiistrv. and in chemical metallurgical processes, u is aiso used as a source of chlorine employed in the manufacturing of bleaching powders and in the chlorination of certain gold ores. , One of the main sources oi sail is j . When sea water is evap orated to dryness, salt is among the first compounds to he uctiosuca. ine last are the potash anu magnesium compounds, being the most soluble. Ihe great Stassfurt potash deposits are overlain as well as underlain by salt, and it is the opinion of geologists that potash mi y accompany some oi the known salt deposits in this country. In a recent Geological buivey report on potash, written by Mr. Phalen, the hone is expressed that every sail pro ducer in the United States will in the future, when boring or otherwise ex ploring for salt, be on the iookoui ior poBsilbe occurrences of potash com pounds. At present me ueoiogicai Survey has a deep drilling party at work in the arid West, where vast deposits of salt are kown to exist, in an endeavor to mid possinie sources oi potash and nitrate of soda two of the three essential elements of "complete fertlizer." a recognized necessity for successful agriculture. Mr. Phalen's report on salt and bromine is issued as an advance chap ter from "Mineral Resources for 1910" and may be obtained on application to the Director, United States Geological Survey, Washington, I). C. When you are invited out to dinner i hereafter by a Hood River bachelor, j don't make excuses and try to evade I the acceptance of the kindness, that is, ; unless you want to miss a feed that i will tickle your pallet most delight-1 fully and will give you a substantial ! feeling when you have finished. Vour I bachelor friends won't starve you here after, nor will they feed you on crusts and burnt potatoes ; lor they have solved the mysteries of the kitchen. Bachelor night will be observed by Mrs. W. II. Lawrence, who is giving a course of lectures in domestic science, on the evening of November 4. The young men will learn how to prepare and cook broiled steak, dough nuts, baking powder biscuit, roast and stuffed chicken, giblet gravy, tea and coffee, and they will be instructed in the proper methods of carving steaks and chickens. The viands will be auc tioned off after the cooking class has given its hnshing touch. Whether you are hungry or not, the evening's program will be worthy of a visit. Think of it! James E. Mont gomery and R. Ruck Kelly, it is ru mored, will be present dressed in immaculate white caps (borrowed for the occasion) and aprons (also bor rowed) wielding gridirons and skewers. Newhall, Representative Hood River, Ore. Phone 277-M Apple Contains Button. On the highest limb on the highest apple tree in his orchard, Thomas P. Dohdy, a mile northeast of Moscow, Idaho, the other day found stuck in an apple a celluloid button, advertising a piano house. How the button was placed there is a mystery. Mr. Dowdy says it would have been impossible to have placed it there without the use of a ladder as the limb was not large enough at that height to have been climbed. The pin had been stuck into the apple while the apple was small, as the button shaded the apple in the shape of the button, preventing its coloring properly. The sear was healed where the pin had been inserted. Hlinli KlVKIl UllKlK NO. 1115, A. V. nnd A. M.-Nwln Hiiliiriluy evi'iilin? on or linfure ewr li lull moon. Iko. 1. Kuico.u, W. M 1).
