Six prompt arrests and convictions in 'Washington, several more in the other riorhweBtern states, and such decisive organized work on all fires (by the several public and private agencies that little lose has been sustained, mark the operant? of the 1911 forest fire wiimhi. Advices re ceived the first of the week by the Western Forestry & Conservation Association from nearly all states, government and private protective atneies report that the recent hot weather has brought dangerous condi tions almost evrywhere, and that small fires are already numerous, but nearly all have been extinguished or confined to slashings and old burn. There has been considerable loss of settlers' improvements and logging equipment carelessly left surrounded by inflammable material but compara tively little injury to standing timber. Reversing last year's experience, fires serious enough to be alarming began first in Oregon, where in Linn and Clackamas counties about $70, (XX) worth of logging equipment and the property of several settlers have been destroyed by slashing fires which were, however, soon brought under control by a large force employed by the For est Service and by private companies. Many other fires throughout the state which caused exaggerated reports also proved to be chiefly on open lands. Organization of the state's patrol sys tem under the new law is practically complete there being state fire war dens in 22 counties. Timber owners connected with the Oregon Forest Fire Association have about 2f0 patrolmen. In response to petitions from prop erty owners some of the counties are also hiring patrolmen. The state has applied to the Secretary of Agricul ture for $10,000 under the Weeks law which authorizes the expenditure of this sum by the (Government in co operation with any state which will add a like amount. UNDERWOOD AND HOOD MARKET PEACHES The fruit prospects of the Under wood and Hood sections of Skamania county arejexcellent, says F. W. De hart, a merchant and rancher of ilood, who was in this city Monday. Orcliardists are expecting a good re turn from this year's crop he states. The peach crop has made an excellent showing this season. The early varieties have mostly all been market ed and the later peaches will be ready for picking witihn three weeks. The product finds a ready market in Port land and the growers are receiving satisfactory prices. J no, Wendorff, one of the largest peach growers in the vicinity, recently put into commission an automobile truck to move his crop to the railroad station. It is the first machine for this work that has been installed in the region, but has proven extremely satisfactory. Vandcrbilt Loses Orchard Case. G. VOGT W.N. WHITE PREDICTS SLIGHT INCREASE W. N. White, after a consideration of the apple situation all over the United States last week, states that augmented by the prodcuts of new bearing orchards in Virginia and West Virginia, the crop this year should au gregate considerably over 28,875,000 barrels. He based this esitmate upon the Government report of July 1, which, he says, represented the condi tion at 59.9 as compared with 49.6 on July 1, 1910. The yield that year, Mr. White says, amounted to 23,825,000 barrels and the conclusions arrived at by him are based upon these figures and ether data which he hail collected. Discussing the outlook in Europe tlie coming year, Mr. White remarked: "Conditions are far different there this season than last when crops in England and France had suffered con siderably from weather conditions. There were very few apples in these then, 'practically no cherries and only bad crops of plums and Green Gages. Tasmanian apples were marketed in June and all apples from Spain and Portugal reailzed high prices, so that everything during August and Septem ber brought the highest figures known for many years. "All through Europe, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Ger many Siiere are good crops of cherries and in .some countries heavy crops of plums, particularly in England and France, and any quantity of Green Gagen in France and Italy. In audi tion to these, 100,000 boxes of Tas mania apples are scheduled to arrive in England during this month. Friut Trade Journal and Produce Record. Magnificent Military Band. The handmaidens of the Nine Muses of whom two, Polhymnia and Terp sichore are best known perhaps, called the language of the soul. Whether in mother's lullaby, wooing for her little one restful, painless slumber, or in thrilling martial strain, stirring men to valorous deeds.Jor in swaying waltz by which lightly trips the fantastic toe, or in serenade where swain pours out his language to sweetheart. Music is the universal eloquence, understood by all ; music is the natural accompani ment of any program of enjoyment. Robert Ingersull once said, "Language is not subtle enough, tender enough to express all we feel and when language fails the highest and deepest longings are transacted into music." Music is the sunshine, the climate of the soul. and it floods the heart with a perfect June." Excejling in all things. The musical contingent ot Lewis & Clark's Great Western bhow, the Cattle King, is quite in keeping with the general super-excellence of the entire institu tion. Everybody is astounded by the superiority of its magnificent military band under the direction ot Del Los MeCapbel. The superb musical organ ization contains sixteen skilled musi cians. The program of classical and popualr compositions will gratify the most exacting ear and refined taste. Sunday, August 6. Nunamaker Visits Ileppncr. Jim Nunamaker was up from Hood River last week looking after his property interests here, lie says this is the best dairy country on the Coast and prospoiity will come when we have more cows, more hogs and more chickens. He is right. Heppner Times. Attack Like Tigers. In lighting to keep the blood pure the white, corpuscles attack disease germs like tigers. P.ut. often germs multiply so fast the little lighters are overcome. Then see pimples, lioils, eczema, saltrheum and sores multiply and strength and appetite fail. This condition demands Electric Catteries to regulate stomach, liver and kidneys add to expel poisons from the blood. "They are the liest blood purilier," writes C. T. Undabn, of Tracy, Calif., "I have ever found." They make rich, red blood, strong nerves and build up your health. Try them. 50e. at Chas. N. Clarke. Auto Tours to Dufur. Mr. and Mrs. L. H.
