The following clipped from the Tomah, W is., Journal, tells of nature's fire works witnessed by the people of that city on July 4 : "A destructive storm ol.wind, rain and lightening suddenly swooped down on this city and vicinity just before 5 o clock the afternoon of the rourth. So suddenly did it come that the crowds in the streets had not time to get under shelter. The rain came in torrents driven by a wind which was almost a tornado, and the storm raged for almost an hour. The numerous lunch and refreshment stands along the street were nearly all wrecked. causing considerable damage in some cases. Awnings were torn loose, roofs were damaged and the streets were littered with the broken limbs of trees, and in some cases entire trees Were blown down. Tomah is the home of the parents of W. II. YOUNG COLLINS Swimming the Columbia one day last week was the record feat of James Collins, a 15-year-old lad of this city. Collins, with a crowd of other youthB, was sporting in the swimming hole frequented by them near the Koberg landing about a mile and a half'above town. His companions dared him to attempt the deed, lie accepted the cliallege and started, with a rowboat following to pick him up in caserne became exhausted. The trip across was made without mishap, and young Collins is now u local hero. The dis tance straight across the river is a mile and one-tenth. The strong cur rent, however, carried the swimmer dow the stream about two miles on the Washington side. The Columbia at this point has been swum by William Chandler and Judge John Li-land Henderson used to accom plish the feat with great ease. onlyWbest Hood River People Give Credit Where Credit is Due. People of Hood River who suffer with sick kidneys and bad backs want a kidney remedy that can be depended upon. The best is Donn's Kidney Pills, a medicine for the kidneys only, made from pure roots and herbs, and the one that ia bucked by cures in Hood River. Head what follows: Its convincing testimony. Mrs. John W, Gatchol, 1114 Seventh St., Hood River, Oregon, says: "I have such great faith in Doan's Kid ney Pills that 1 have often recom mended them and people who have taken them on my advice have been benefitted. There was a dull, nagging pain across the small of my back and 1 had trouble from the kidnev secre tions. I tried several well-known kid ney remedies, but found no relief un til I used Donn's Kidney Pills. They not only removed the backache but strengthened my kidneys and helped me in every way. I always keep a supply of Doan's Kidney Pills in the house." Kor salt; bv nil dealers. Prici ftltpmita Foster-Milbtirn Co.. liiiffaln. New York. sole agents for the United States. Many of these men appeared to be mechanics or tradesmen, and professed to be looking for employment. Trainmen complain that are exueri- encing dilliculty in keeping the men from westbound freight trains, and say that not for many years have they noticed so many loiterers in the vicin ity of railroad yards, stations and along the right of way. On one or two occasions bands of these sojourn ers have taken possession of an entire ireiglit tram. It is the custom amonir Eastern man ufacturers and mill owners to close their plants during the heated seasons f the summer, and many men are thin thrown out of employment tem porarily. Reports that some of these places are not to open immediately have caused many employes to start westward in search of work. Evi dently they choose the to walk or ride on freight trains rather than travel in parlor cars and pay first-class fares. Kegardless of the manner in which they come to Oregon, the commercial organizations of the various active communities of the state say they are ready to extend them a welcome if they show a disposition to bo to work upon arrival. Moon Rise Makes Beautiful Picture. The people of this city, who were enjoying Sunday night in the cool retreats of breeze swept verandas. were witnesses or a most unique and beautiful picture made by the rising moon, which, as it came un over t ho ridge separating the Hood River Valley imui liiu mopier uisinci, was a subdued red in color because of the slight h7 on the horizon. The big glowing half globe crept up slowly behind a giant fir tree on the very summit of the hills. Just as the rays from the last portion of the moon broke over the hill the tall fir was plainly outlned. The body of the tree was in the very center of " the half moon and the branches extended symetrically on either side. It seemed as though a giant had painted a beautiful picture on th landscape. It was a treat for young lovers, who spent the evening wooinp, and older hearts beat with emotions of younger days under the charm of the view. "Gentlemen," be said, "this morn tug's recitation will be on variants of the Notador Joke. Mr. Hawkins, you Will please begin by telling us the first Version of the Notador Jest." "When Is a door not a door?" droned Mr. Hawkins. "When It s ajar." "Right," said the professor, with a weary sign. "Mr. Wllklns, when do we find the first variant upon this original ?' "In the days of Socrates." replied Mr. Wllklns. "That Is correct," said the professor. "Ton may give us the variant" "'When Is a Jaw not a Jaw? asked Xanthippe as she poured out Socrates' morning cup of hemlock. 'When lt"s a-waggln',' answered Socrates, much to the lady's disgust." replied Mr. Wllklns. "Very good, Mr. Wil!:Ins," said the professor, his eyes filling with te-irs. "Do we find any form of this Jesf in the Scriptural period, Mr. Kiithers?" asked the professor after getting bis emotions under control. "Implied only," said Mr. Slithers. "You may state It." groaned the pro fessi . "'When Is a rat not a rat? asked Shem," growled Mr. Slithers. 'When it's an Ararat," answered nam." "na-huiu!" said the professor, scratching his head. "That Is a pret ty fair answer. Mr. Slithers, but it is not the one given in my lecture. We are not desirous of encouraging orig inal thought among our students this term. You may give me the Instance quoted in my lecture." "I wasn't here that day, professor," said Mr. Slithers. "Then Mr. Illnbbington may answer the question," said the professor. " 'When is a verb not a verb? asked the queen of Sheba. 'When it's a proverb, replied Solomon, with a wink at Mrs. S., Series J.. No. 2780." replied Mr. Blabbington. "That Is correct, Mr. Blabbington," said the professor, "except In the mi nor detail of Mrs. Solomon's number. The lady referred to was No. 4S07, Se ries O." "Mr. Hlckleberry, you may grve me the barnyard version of the Notador Jest," continued the professor, taking a deep draft of black coffee to keep himself awake. "When Is a chicken not a chicken?' began Mr. nickleberry. "Yes, go on, Mr. nickleberry," said the professor. "When is a chicken not a chicken?" "Why, when it's a er when It's an apple," said Mr. nickleberry, hesitat ing much, however. "When it's an apple?' retorted the professor sharply, "now absurd, Mr. Hlckleberry 1 That is an answer that absolutely destroys the value of the Jest Now, think a moment Tut your mind on the proposition when is a chicken sot a chicken?' "You said in your lecture that a chicken was not a chicken when it was an apple," replied the embarrass ed student, "or at least I so under stood you, professor." "I said nothing of the kind, sir," re torted the professor with a frown of dlsplensure. "Mr. Wagstaff, perhaps you can tell Mr. Hlckleberry what I did sny when Is a chicken not a chick en?' "When it's a-plppln', sir," replied Mr. Wagstaff. "Correct," said the professor.
