Liekin', N. LarninT Wat iha Rule. The schoolroom practice of half century ago are Incredible to a modern pupil. It la well that they have not keen conUnued, but an account of them by an eyewitness i often am us ing. One Incident from A. II. Hall's "Old Bradford Schooldays" brings up a teacher who clung to the old prin ciple, "No llckln', no larnln'." Horace Walton, at mens, climbed to the top of the highest nut tree and, losing his bold, fell to the ground. He struck on uiauy of the limb In his drsceut. The buys were terribly frightened a be struck the p:ouud. Just as we crowded alout hlui t see If he still lived, our faces as 'while as his, the bell rang for the resumption of studies. The lust boy In was Walton, and Just as he fell rather than sat down In bis seat the master shouted, "Come out here lustunter!" He gave him a flogging that made the fall from the tree seem the lesser of the two evils. A few years ago, meeting Walton for the first time for many years, be re marked that he well rememtered bow that master at last succeeded in bring ing things into routine order In the school. Kach morning as the school assembled this order was observed: "First bell, come to order; second lell. attention; third bell, lick Walton." WOMEN IN WALL STREET. Thty Are Good Winners, but Drown Thoir Losses In Tear. To many brokers women are taoo doos, and some stock exchange houses refuse absolutely to have anything to do with the fairex. The majority of brokerage firms try their best to keep women's speculative accounts out of their offices. Some bouses are obliged to take women's accounts as a matter of personal friendship, but they will not open accounts for other women, no matter how well they may be Intro duced. Wall street men do not have a high opinion of the average woman's busi ness seuse. Most women have an Idea that one needs only to get a "Up" from some "Insider" In Wall street to be sure of making "bnrrels of money" for new gowns, hats and Jewelry. The dictum of Wall street Is that women are good winners, but bad losers. It U difficult to reason about money and business with an angry or weeping woman. Her view of Wall street and all Its works suddenly be comes entirely emotional, and only a broker with Infinite patience can calm her. Many a time a stock exchange house has taken a woman customer's loss rather than face her tears. Strand Magazine. The Queer Carabao. The carabao is said to be slower than a camel and more obstinate than a mule. Every one seems agreed that the chief ambition In life of a cara bao, If he has any at all, Is to lie down lu a puddle of water with Jnst his nose and horns sticking out. Consequently considerable commotion' rules the wag on train when It approaches a stream that must bo forded. The soldiers who are walking behind the carts as guards lay aside their rifles and begin to belabor each animal. In the mid dle of the stream the excitement reaches Its highest pitch. The cara bao will begin to stretch his neck and bend his knees and grunt infallible Indications of his Intention to lie down. Everybody works like a beaver, to pre vent him from accomplishing this fell purpose, 'but their labors are not al ways successful. They may get blm over the stream, but this Is uuusual giKid fortune. Harper's Weekly. Siren In Skirt. Which Is the most recent siren (of the animal variety) In history? Jacobus Noleras relates that lu 1403 a siren was captured In the Zuldcr Zee. She was (says Mr. Norman Douglas In "Siren Land") brought to Haarlem and, being naked, allowed herself to be clothed; she learned to eat like a Dutchman; she could spin thread and take pleas ure In other maidenly occupations; she was gentle and lived to a great age. But she never spoke. The honest bur ghers had no knowledge of the lan guage of the sen folk to enable them to teach her their own tongue, so she remained mute to the end of her days. Making Us of It. "There Ls no use giving you a check, my dear. My bank account Is over drawn." "Well, give li to me anyway, George. And, say, make It for $300. I want to pull It out of my shopping bug with my handkerchief at the bridge game this .afternoon." Cleveland rinlir Deal er. . V Not F-isy. "What Is the hardest work you do?" "My hardest work," replied Seuator Sorghum "Is trying to look like my photograph nnd talk like my speeches when I get back to my home town." Washington Star. An Easy Task. "Pa, what Is n philosopher?" "A philosopher, my boy, Is oue who fella other ieople that their troubles don't amount' to much." Detroit Free Tress. A Finishing Touch. ALL APPLE DISTRICTS Mil COMPETE For the first time in the history of the Washington State Fair held an nually at Yakima all apple growing regions of the Northwest will compete for the $500 gold cup offered instead of the different counties as haa been the custom heretofore. An objection was raised to the old custom on the grown' that the difficulty and expense cf transporting fruit operated as a fiai.Ui cap In favor of Yakima. The competition has been limited to apples, says the Republic, because, while there is much variation in other fruits that are raised in the different districts of the Northwest, all of his great territory, embracing the north western states, and British Columbia, is recognized all over the world as being pre-eminently an apple growing country. The conditions of the com petition have been so framed as to give all the different districts an even chance for the prize by exhibiting the apples specially suited to their various soils ana climates. "The rules governing the contest are as follows : "1. The name of the prower is im material just so the apples were fciown in the district or valley making the exhibit. "2. To insure examination by the judges all apples must be correctly and distinctly labeled and placed dur ing the first day of the fair. it. I he duplication of varieties in collci tiiin will not be tolerated. "4. llienameof the exhibitor, to gether with a complete list of the varieties exhibited by nun must oe delivered to the secretary on or before the first day of the fair. "5. Kach exhibit must show entry card in a conspicuous place, snd no exhibit will be allowed to leave the grounds until the close of the fair, ex cept by special permission for cause. "B. The scores for judging the ex hibits will be: Number of varieties and extent of display, 10; size, 15; form, 20; quality 20, color, 15; freedom from blemish. 20. Total. 100. ' 7. No exhibit scoring less than 76 Doints will be considered." The following are the districts that will compete: Wenatchee District Comprising Chelan, Okanogan, Douglas and Grant. Walla Walla District-Comprising southeastern Washington, counties of Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield and Asotin and Franklin. Yakima Valley District -Comprising all between Ellenbsurg and Kenne Wick, inclusive. Western Washington District Com prising all west ot the L-ascaue moun tains.
