TASMANIA APPLES
IN NEW YORK
Tasmania apples will again make
their appearanre in the New York
market next month, and if they trim?
satisfactory prices, nays the Fruit
Trade Journal and Produce News, the
trade will be able to get them during
the entire summer.
The first, or experimental cargo, will
arrive in New York about the 2d of
July. It will be shipped to London
and from there trans-shipped to Amer
ica. These apples will travel the en
tire distance under eold storage and
are expected to arrive in New York in
line condition. They will represent
the best fruit in Tasmania und the
cargo will consist of aiioul 10,000
boxes.
These apples are already being ship
ped to Hamburg by direct steamship
line, and if America gives the Tas
mania growers any encouragement, a
direct steamship line will be estab
lished between Tasmania and New
York, but the apples must rei.lize
from $2.00 to f&75 to make the busi
ness a success. The fruit is packed in
full imperial Klandard boxes contain
ing a bushel, and ev'tiy apple will be
wrapjied in tissue paper and packed in
tiers.
What Is Wifffisi Poultry Problem?
"The three problems in poultry
raising that troublu the farnieis of
Oregon more than any others," sajf
Professor James Dryden of the O. A.
C. poultry department, "are first,
getting the eggs in winter; second,
lice and mites; and third, raising the
chicks.
"Last week we gave the farmers'
opinions as to whether there was profit
or not in poultry keeping, jne
answers to ths question, this week,
are designed to show why there is not
more profit in the business Out of 333
answers we received the following re
plies: C2 said the problem was, how
to get eggs in winter; 60, lice "and
mites; 6(i, raising the chickens; 24
hawks; 6, coyotes; 34, other vermin;
4, rains or wet weather; 20, feeding;
9, hatching; 58, miscellaneous diili
culties. "To make the hen lay in winter is
apparently the real problem ; and yet
its solution depends upon the.solution
of other problems It is not merely a
question of caring for or making the
hens lay. The problem goes back to
the making of the hen. If the hen
were made right there would be little
trouble in making her lay. How to
make the hen lay in winter resolves
itself largely into a question of mak
ing the hen.
"1 am incilned to think that the fG
who said that the raising of the chicks
is the hardest problem, came nearer
'hitting the nail in the head.' To get
a profitable egg yield under any condi
tions, the Hock of layers must be fre
quently renewed. The old hen doesn't
pay. r or commercial purposes it sell
dotn pays to keep her more than two
years. This" means that in a few years
the farmer has raised Beveral genera
tions of fowls, and any mistake in the
breeding or raising is very soon evi
dent. To be successful a poultry
raiser must be able to maintain olf
spring with the same vigor and vital
ity as the parent; otherwise there
would soon be no eggs in winter be
cause of lack of constitutional vigor in
the Btock.
l"But it is not all in the raising.
There is probably more in the breed
ing, and it is not so much a matter of
the breeds. No matter how they may
be raised, fed and cared for, some
hens won't lay, because they have not
the breeding or the laying capacity.
On the other hand, some will lay,
almost in spite of neglect: that is a
question of breeding."
One farmer replied to the question,
that the problem was "To make the
exit large enough for the hens, but
to small for our valuable cattle dog,
and to have open front house and yet
be protected from skunks, owls, hawks,
ami wild cats."
Another complained of tho problem
of shipping and marketing; another
has uilhculty in getting on the market
the kind of feed he wants; and still
another linds his problem "To keep
the chicks growing from time of
hatching until ready for market, and
keep them free from disease.

Jap Injured by Cable.
One of the Japanese laborers on the
Huneboro orchard tract near Parkdale
was seriously injured by a snapping
cable last Friday morning. The cable
broke while the crew of men were
pulling stumps, ami one end of it
whipped around and struck the Jap in
the face' just above the nose, which
was crushed to a pulp, lie also sus
tained injuries to one leg.
Although the Honeboro Orchard Co.
has cleared nearly 200 acres Jof land
with cables and a big donkey engine,
this is the first serious accident that it
has had, owing to the carefulness of
the engineer, 1L C. Rowland.
The Jnp laborer was brought to this
city and placed in the Cottage hospi
tal, where Ins injuries were at
tended to.

HELPFUL WORDS.
From a Hood River Citizen.
Is your back lame and painful?
J Does it ache espscially after exer
tion? Is there a soreness in the kidney
region?
These symptoms indicate weak kid
neys ;
There is danger in delay.
Weak kidneys fast get weaker.
Give your trouble prompt attention.
Doan a Kidney Pills act quickly,
They strengthen weak kidneys.
Read this Hood River testimony.
Mrs. Annie Samuel, 1210 Seventh
St., Hood River, Ore., says: "A year
ago 1 began to suffer from kidney
complaint and gravel. My back ached
a great deal and the kidney secretions
were unnatural. Hearing of a similar
ease in which Doan's Kidney Pills
brought great benefit, I gave them a
trial. Less than the contents of one
box corrected my trouble and 1 have
had no cause for complaint since.
