Threatens Hoycott.
A Idler, bearing a l'oi'lland date
mark and apparent ly written by some
very ignorant person, was received bv
a Hood Kiver fruitgrower last week
and contained n warning to Hood Kiver
nrchardisls against the employment of
Japanese labor. The letter, which is
signed "Sit I'p nnd Take Notice" and
which is very poorly spelled, states
that if JapH are continued to he em
ployed here the famous llooil Kiver fruit
will be boycotted.
NO BUSINESS DONE
DECORATION DAY
The citizens of Hood River closed
their business houses Tuesday and paid
their respects to the memory of the
country's dead soldiers. Forming at
'.1:30 jn the 'morning a parade marched
from the K. of P. hall down State
streetlto Second thence to Oak street
and back up Tfnrd to the starting
point, where the jveterans who were
not able to'walktook rigs to Idlewild
cemetery where ritualistic services
were observed 'over the graves. The
members of the 0. A. It. and Woman'
ReliefJOorps who felt themselves equal
to the walk to the cemetery formed in
the 'parade which was led by Arthur
Clarke's military hand. Members of
the Knights of l'ytlnas, in uniform,
took part in'the parade. A program
was conducted hy the students of the
recently graduated class of the Hood
liiverUiligh School.
At2:.'i0 in the afternoon a large
auidence "of the people of the city
assembled on the courthouse square,
where several addresses were de
livered.
Zolls Lays Oak St. Sidewalk.
.Inn. .oils has been granted the con
tract to lay a concrete pavement on
the south side ot Oak street beginning
in tront ot the l.lapp building and ex
tending half way up the block. The
old hoard walk has been removed and
work was begun on the new pavement
yesterday.
First Street Open to Traffic.
The new concrete pavement of First
street has been completed by W, 0.
Aldred & On. at a cost of and
wastopened to trallic last week. The
length of the pavement is lib!) feet.
The pavement seems to be adaptable
both for light and heavy turvel. He
cause of its rough surface it shoud not
prove very slippery in winter time.
The Dalles Man Deserts Wife.
'Ihe Hood liiver police authorities
have received word Irom Ihe Dalles to
be on the lookout for Koy Vanortruck
who has deserted his wife and infant
cnild in that city. Vanortruck, who is
' years of age has been employed as
day porter at The Hotel Dalles. He
left a note for his wife, but merely
slated that he was gone from The
milieu lorever, nut gave no reasons
for his steps.
