CONCERNING GARBAGE
At a recent meeting of the city
council H. Yamaguchi, a Japanese,
was made officia earbaee remover.
The following is his polite petition for
the privilege:
14 Oak St., Hood River Oregon.
March, 1911.
To His Honor, The Mayor of Hood
River,
City Hall.
City.
Dear Sir:
I. the undersigned, respectfully
beg of your generous approbation on
the subject, which I herewith submit
to your unprejudiced and impartial
consideration.
The writer has lived here since last
fall and thence to this labored as day
worker in most of your family resi
dences. Thus I became accustomed to
notice the wastes from the kitchen and
dining table, empty cans, and all other
kinds of rubbishes scattered all arounu
these fine homes.
From oft perceiving this disagree
able, flthy and unhealthy sight, I have
come to the conclusion that your fair
city has at present no regular licensed
garbage-man.
In view of the existing situation,
provided that your approval and per
mission afford me a franchise, I shall
at once become legal "refuse-remov
er. Then 1 snail maKe a contract
with each house to dispose of a certain
quantity of refuse at a reasonabe
charge once a week. I shall take the
collected wastes to the spot to be here
after approved and assigned by you.
It is not. at all early, as your Honor
well knows, to prepare now for the ap
proaching summer, when the contagi
ous germs are very apt to propagate.
Not only from the sanitary, but also
from the esthetic point of view, it is
one of the most desirable and benefi
cial undertakings to exterminate the
enemy of health and beauty of this,
the most fortunate and progressive
city. Should this writing be furtunate
enough to receive your kind endorse
ment, would apply for the license, and
pray for the facilities necessary to
carry on the work.
Very respectfully submitted,
H. Yamaguchi.

oppose purchase
of Mcdonald block
Although a number of the members
of the school board of district No. 3
addressed the legal voters, who were
called together at the Park street
school building Friday afternoon to
consider the question of purchasing the
McDonald block, which lies immediate
ly to the south of the High School
grounds in the the Pleasant View addi
tion, and urged that the property be
secured for the purpose of athletic
grounds and to be used at a later date
for horticultural experiment grounus,
the proposition was unanimously
opposed.
The meetine was wen attciuieu ana
characterized by the warm debate be
tween those advising the expediency of
purchase at the present time and those
who deemed it unwise to make such an
expenditure until a later date and un
der more pressing need.
Thrilling State Street Runaway.
While C. D. Hoyt, of the Purity
Dairv Co.. was making a delivery at
the home Of William Stewart on State
street about 9 o clock last Iriday
mornini? the team, which was left
standing beside the curb, without any
apparent cause tor irignt whirled
around and dashed madly down the hill
toward the business portion of the citv.
H. W. Powell, who was delivering the
Heights' mail during the illness of
Homer Woodworth, had just started on
his daily round. He saw the fright
ened team and turned out of the street
near the City Bakery corner in order
to let them pass. However, the effort
of some one opposite the bakery to
stop the runaways caused them to turn
and collide with the horse drawing the
mail cart which was instantly killed,
its body having been impaled by the
pole of the milk wagon.
