FOLK WILL TELL OF FIGHT WITH GRAFT Kx-Governor Joseph W. Folk, who will lecture here under the auspices of the Commercial Cluh, Saturday even ing, April IS, is too well known to really need any mention hero, and his coming to this city will not only be one of the most notable events in the his tory of the Lvecum course, but in the history of the community. It will also bo of interest to know that he is Missouri's candidate for the presiden tial nomination on the Democratic ticket. The recital of nil the reforms he in augurated while he held office in Missouri, would of themselves more than till this page. Gov. Folk is re garded as the pioneer in the great modern light against graft which is now goimr on everywhere both in the Slate and Nation. As Governor he put an end to boodling in legislative affairs. He abolished the practice of legisla tures and ollicials riding on free passes. He procured the passage of a law after a hard legislative tight repealing the race-track law whereby gambling was legalized, and put the most power ful and insolent race-track syndicate in the woi Id out of business. He stamped out grafters in the police department : he appointed men of the highest character to all positions of public trust, closed the gambling dives in St. Louis and enforced the law closing saloons on Sunday, in the face of intense opposition and denunciation. This also was the beginning for law enforecement that is now going on in nearly all the large cities. Iloijihts Hatters Hit League Pitcher. Although the Underwood team play ing here Sunday afternoon had for a pitcher "Curly1' Hroughton, who left to join the Hoise League Monday night the snappy Heights' team made the playing of the visitors look like a per forated thirty cent piece at every corner. Kerause of the delay in the trains the Dunbars were unable to fulfill their engagement here at the Commercial Club. Secretary Skinner states that a great many tickets to the performance had been disposed of. It was not known until a late hour that the ap pointment could not be and many had assembled hall before the news was is a great disappointment to know that the Dunbars will not he seen here. HOOD RAILROAD WILL BURN OIL Mt. Hood Railroad locomotive No, 1 is now at the Willamette Iron & Steel works in Portland, where it is being converted into an oil burner. If the fuel oil, the furnishing of which the Standard Oil Co. has the contract, proves to be efficient and furnishes the increase in power, hoped for, all of the locomotives of the company as well as those of the Oregon Lumber Co. may be changed to oil burners. It has recently been reported that the railway company would institute a passenger service of two trips per day between here and Parkdale. The man agement was not able to verify this.
