' H I WW iibm in . . . HOOD RIVER GLACIER, THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 1911 Sjuuh Siwr CSlaricr ARTHUR D. MOE. Publisher. Subscription, 81.50 Per Year. CLAIMS INVESTIGATED BY SPECIAL AGENTS lix i I ffw SUPPORT LYCEUM COURSE. The report of Secretary Skinner at the last meeting of the Commercial Club to the effect that the two former presentations of the Lyceum course, provided for the amusement of Hood River people by the Commercial Club this winter, were not as well attended as they shoudl have been, is, to say the least, not flattering to the citizens of the community. However, nil of us are thoufthtlesa at times and maybe guilty of "Letting George do it." Hut it does us all good, of course, to "wake up to ourselves" and make good resolutions for the future, and iimliuihrpdlv the ran tic siiL'irestion of the secretary of the club will cause us to realize that the club is not in the show business for its health. Indeed the members of the club deserve creilit for the initiative in securing some good attractions for the amimmeiit and instruction of the residents of the community. The numbers that have nlrcat'y been presented were said to be tj f a first class character by those who haw them. The two yet to be given, though of a distinctly different nature, have made an excellent reputation, Not only because of the relation with which they stand to the club but also because of their true worth they merit a good attendance. Grand Officers of Masons Here. The Most Illustrious Grand Master J. II. Richmond and Grand Marshal Koy Quackenbush, both of I'ortland, of the Grand Council of Oregon Royal and Select Masters, paid an official visit to the Mt. Hood chapter here Tuesday night. R. M. degree work was conducted followed by a banquet to which the wives of the members were invited. Frank Ginger and J. K. McGregor, of Mosier, were present for the meeting. A special meeting of the Royal Arch Chapter of Masons will be held to morrow night when work in the M. M. degree will be conducted. A special meeting of the Masonic lodge will be held Saturday night for the purpose of conducting first degree work. Hull Will Manage Three Plants. Albert S. Hall, who retained the management of the business of the Hood River Light and l'ower Co. of this place after it had been purchased by the 1'acific l'ower & Light Co., has been given the management also of the White Salmon and Mosier plants. Mr. Hall came here about a year ngo'from Ilillsboro, where lie had spent three years in charge of the electric plant there. Previous to this he held a position with the General Electric Co. at Schenectady, N. Y. Mr. Hall is an alumnus of 0. A. C. The operation of the plant at White Salmon will still be under the supervi sion of J. T, Thompson. Fined For Killing Deer Out of Season. On account of reports from the upper valley that deer were being killed out of season in that region Game Warden L. J. Fritz came to Hood River Satur day in search of evidence. Reports have recently been circulated to the effect that 17 deer were slaughtered this winter while the heavy snows cov ered the ground. As a result, of War den's Fritz's investigations Mark Wey gandt and W. Jones appeared before Justice of the l'eace A. C. liuck here yesterday morning and plead guilty to charges of killing deer out of season. Kach were lined $50. Mark Weygandt is the well known Mt. Hood guide. Sowing the Seed. F.verv effort made towards the banishment of Licensed Evils which liuvi! existed for years is so much hel in the reform movements of the world We look for temiiorarv defeats hut we may reasonably suppose these an educating and that the evils wil enventually be conquered through victory over sin and wrong. People tell us if we ever get, rid of the saloon there will be other evils with which ti contend. Kven so. is it not worth while to attack recognized evils as we go through this world of ours? Our greatest evils are those fostered by a desire to accumulate wealth at th expense ot our lellow men and our battle ground should be with thesi forces. It is deplorable that a larg' part ol (ho world should lie called upon year alter year to face certain eon ditions ami not seemingly be able effect a radical change. As ages have progressed young people have not. been taught sulhcient ly gt oil principles. Moral training m our homes and schools have been sadly deficient and we are now only reaping as a nation what we have sown. Hut are wo not just beginning to think and act? Here is food for the optimist. Take courage and go ahead. Gradually people are being led on and on guided by the beacon light of truth until the fruition is reached and darkness of doubt in n Heavenly Father's love and wisdom disappears, bringing out. the radiance of Divine Glory anil Gladness. J. A. Hunt, (Vr. Sec, W. C. T. V. Or. Mary P. Jordan, who with her husband was forced to go to California three years ago on account of the health of her child, spent '1 uesday here. She made the hurried trip from Portland, where she had come to accompany a tubercular patient. Or. Jordan states that the health id' herself and her child have become almost perfect. They are now located near San Diego, at. Dehesa, where they have a ranch. The topography of the country there, she stated, is very similar to that of the lined River Valley. Bids Invited. Moody and IJ. n. vs. Wm. T. Moody, was taken by F. A. liishop as notary public yesterday. The basis of the charges in the lirst case was that the defendant had not complied with the bomestad law rela tive to residence upon and cultivation of the land tiled upon. The charges aganist the latter defendant, however, were based only on a failure to reside the proper time on the land. The evi dence will be sent by Mr. liishop to the Receiver and Register of the land office at The Dalles and the case will lie decided there. The defendants in these cases Were reprcs'-ntcd by Attorneys A. A. Jay tie ami K. 11. Ilartwig. G. A. Benedict, a special agent from Portland appeared for the government. It is reported that this is only the beginning of a number of homestead eases for it is understood that special agents are at work securing evidence on other claims in the Upper Valley.
