(Read by Miss Blanch Ford at the joint, meeting 01 me vanuy rosi u. n. R. and the Canby Woman's Relief a . m a.-- n i n - r Corps held on Saturday J afternoon, February 11, in celebration of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. The poem was written for the occasion by T. J. Cunning.).. Last May I saw the G. A. R. with halting steo eo bv. Tis fifty years since first they marched With buoyant tread ana flashing eye. With courage strong and purpose bold To save the Union, held so dear: And guard the flag that over head Held reverent in their hearts, its cheer. These marches, silent, aged and worn Think of the past in which they strove-"- Their banner blazed with battle field O'er all the south, where they did rove. Fort Sumpter's fall called out these men To battle with a traitor crew. Thev answered promptly to the call And followed where the Dugle blew. Alexandria taken without a right, where gallant Elsworth fell, These marches, quick avenged his death and stopped one rebel yell. Undaunted by Bull Run's defeat, thev onward kept their way, At Laurel Hill and Phillippi, swept out the rebel gray. Belmont, Kentucky and Mill Springs, where Zollicoffer fell. These names upon their banners, what cheering tale they tell. Pea Ridge and Lexington, Fort Henry and Donaldson taken Left an open road to bhiloh, where Grant was, badly shaken. But he held his own, while Buel's men came marching all the night And hurled the rebels back again, who thought they'd won the tight. Springfield, Fair Oaks, and at Antie tam too These marches saw hot times through all the year of eighteen sixty two. But Oh ! the thought appalls me, to tell all the fields they won I thought 'twould be an easy thing, to tell you what they done Why to tell the tale of Gettysburg would many volumes till And leave out all the cream these marches could instill. It took some five and twenty years, Shiloh's storv to make true But they saved the land most bravely, Those.marching Doys in Diue. They march no more to battle, no deadly arms they bear, But carry sweet 'flowers of spring to deck the graves of comrades dear. While at the front "Old Glory" waves A blessir.g on this tottering host. And a nation bows its reverent head, From Maine to Pacific coast. What did they do to merit this? They did not free the slave. Oh ! no. Commander-in-chief Old Abe (So called bv friend and foe) Freed the bondsman and cleaned the flaar. Bv a single stroke of pen. But he knew he had to back him this host of marching men. Those men who fought in fiercest war. that ever a nation rent : Those men of a thousand battles, who'd scaled every battlement, Those men of Chicamauga, Mission Ridge, Kenesaw Joined hands with me who stood at Pickett s charge A,nd in the Wilderess, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Had shown themselves Soldiers large. Remembering the orders of Commander-in-Chief To bind up the wounds caused by war- Came home, and decided tne very best wav To do this was to form into Posts the G. A. R. The old foes were remembered in this wise arrangement And banished froth hearts all thoughts of estrangement In fraternity and charity they met them sincere They returned it with loyalty proven and clear. So that today I'll wager more than a frank You can-'t tell who's most loyal, Johnny or Yank. THE ONLY WAY Many Hood River Citizens covered It. Something of a contrast between the Dromotion ideas of Western commercial organization and those of some of the Eastern cities is anordea Dy a letter received from the secretary of the Koston Chamber of Commerce at the Commercial Club. The communication is in replv to a request from C. All that the Portland Commercial Club has to do is to forward $1.60 in money order, check or nostace stamps, and the book con taining the desired informaton will be started westward. As to promotion literature, the letter states that the Boston organization has nothing of the kind, except a few booklets that are "antiauated." but that these possibly might be ofjsome assistance, so they would be mailed under separate cover, Telegram.
