ELBERT HUDBARD
MASTER OF EPIGRAM
Elbert Hubbard, who is to lecture in
the Heilbronner Hall February 20, is
regarded by many literary men one of
the greatest makers of epigrams liv
ing, if not the greatest that ever
lived. As Alva Adams puts it, there
have been but three supreme makers
of epigrams, Solomon, Shakespeare
and Hubbard, but the tatter has the
advantage of Solomon and Shakes
peare, having wrote last. Hers are a !
few briefs from his pen :
lo escape criticism, do nothing, say
notning, be nothing.
Failure is only for those who think
failure.
Work your grief up into art and it is
gone.
Society is very tolerant; it forgives
everything but the truth.
Fences are only for those who can
not fly.
Do not keep your kindness in water-
tignt compartments, if it runs over
a bit twill do no harm.
We are punished by our sins, not for
tnem.
A successful man is one who has
tried, not cried : who has worked, not
dodged; who has shouldeted responsi
bility, not evaded it; who has gotten
under the burden, not merely Btood
off, looking on, giving advice and phil
osopnizing on the situation.
The result of a man's work is not
the measure of success. To go down
with the ship in storm and tempest is
better than to paddle away to Paradise
in an urthodox canoe.
To have worked is to have succeeded
we leave the results to time. Life
is too short to gather the Harvest
we can only sow.
i ncueve that no one can harm us
but ourselves ; that sin is misdirected
energy; that there is no devil but
fear; and that the Universe is planned
for good. On every side we find
beauty and excellence held in the bal
ance of things. We know that. work
is a blessing, that winter is as neces
sary as summer, that night is as use
ful as day, that death is a manisfesta
tion of Life, and just as good. I be
lieve in the Now and Here. I believe
in You and I believe in a Power that
is in Ourselves that makes for Right
eousness.

A Locomotive of Apples.
One of the most uinque and attrac
tive features on exhibition at the great
horticultural exhibition recently held
at Sebastopol Cal., says a writer in the
January Wide World, was a huge
apple locomotive. All the exterior
parts of this immense "fruit engine"
were composed of large and beautiful
apples, of which thousands were used
in the completion of the work. At
first a wooden frame an exact dupli
cate of a railway engine was built,
and all over this were placed apples,
in tasty and artistic patterns.
When all this work was completed
there stood the perfect figure of a big
apple locomotive." Under a brill
iant electric light the work presented
magnificent appearance fairlv
aazznng. lo buna such a hgure re-
quired.much care, artistic skill, time
and no little expense. The total
length of this "fruit eneine" is
twenty-six feet, while from the apple
roadbed and ties up to the top of the
siacK is nearly ten leet. No t detail
has been omitted in the work. Every
appurtenance belonging to a real gen
uine locomotive is there, incluiing
cowcatcher, boiler, headlight, stack,
whistle, bell, sand-chamber, cab and
tender. It is needless to add that this
splendid piece of work was the central
hgure of public admiration, interest
nd curiosity; also, that the huee
"apple locomotive" was awarded the
highest premium of the horticultural
exposition.
