HOOD RIVER GLACIER, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1910 Bjinifc Sturr (5lancr ARTHUR D. MOE. Publisher. Subscription, til."0 ler Year. THE MEAT TRUST. The statement of Armour and Com pany for the fiscal year ended October 22 shows gross business of two hundred and fifty million dollars, over twenty millions a month and nearly three quarters of a million a day. This is but one of the big companies credited as belonging to the meat trust. Yet the net profit of this business was less than four tenths of one per cent and the dividends paid to stockholders less than two and a half tenthr. of one per cent. There are four of those big companies doing about an equal amount of business, while there are a few smaller concerns which the big companies allow to live a and make a small profit. In the very nature of things a combination doing a business amounting in volume to more than the large railroad systems, and whose bus iness extends to the smallest commun ities in the country, have the meat situation under their control. That Armour & Company can pay a divi dend of ten million dollars to the stockholders on the narrow margin of 25 cents a head on cattle, 8 cents on hogs and 5 cents on sheep, gives an idea of .the magnitude of their business and the means they employ to force out competition. The small retail butcher cannot do business on this margin. Naithcr can the small whole saler who buys his stock in the stock yards markets compete, and he must submit to the dictates of the combine or go out of business. At the large Stockyards centers a few wholesalers who have their capita! tied up in small plants are allowed to exist in order to give semblance of competition in the open markets, yet their earnings are cut down 'to a barely living basis and their business is not allowed to in crease. The meat trust in its operations is against public policy and as much a detriment to the common mass of peo ple as the Standard Oil or other big trusts. Its operations, however, are different and greatly misunderstood by the public. The American principle that all the people should have equal rights is grossly violated. The prin cipal study of the meat trust is to force into bankruptcy every whole sale or retail dealer who will not submit to their dication, and espec ially the small packers or wholesalers in the various important cities through out the United States who are building a good business, investing their capi tal locally, and spending their profits in the upbuilding of the communities in which they live. Where the meat trust has absolute control prices are raised beyond a legitimate profit, and the profits Becured in these places are largely used in cutting the ground from under the feet of those dealers bold enough to defy the mandates of the truBt. At the large distributing packing centers of the trust a number of price lists are issutid each week, a different set of prices for the same quality of meat shipped to different pluceH, charging "all the traflic will bear" where the communities arc forced to pay it, and down to less than wholesale cost in others until the small competitor gives up. At the latter pluce the consumer assists in the slaughter of his home merchant by swallowing the bait offered in tem porary low prices, only to wake up to the fact in a little while after the sherilfs notice of sale is placed over the local concern that the price of meat has cone up. and irone to stay. Yet what are von going to do about it? The federal government periodi cally indicts some of the members of the so-called trust, an investigation is made and the matter finally dropped.. The operations of the trust are mostly within the law, and cannot be reached through ordinary means. That a sys tem of extensive rebates exi.its from the railroads is well known by em iilovei of the packing houses who are in touch with the railroad department of the trust. That the "trallie man Hirer of each large packing home is one of the Ingest salaried men in the house iB an indication of the import ance of that branch of the office hjs tern. The shrewd "traffic manager' can force unwilling rebates from the railroad companies by n system of claims for damages which the railroad companies finally find it better policy to allow than to antagonize the mi mense business of the packers, whicl can be diverted to a rival line as i punishment. The refrigerator line business of the packers is also a large source or revenue, exacting a tribute from the railroads largely in excess of the service rendered. Yet. what are you going to do about it? The water works has Jbeen marked down ns a Christmas bargain from 40 to 38.9 cents. If anyone wants it let him make application early, as there is only one left. Church Will Banquet. Mr. Hough is visiting all the noted apple sections and the article will be. a gen eral one, without exploiting any par ticular section. He had little to say of his impressions of Hood River, ex cept to admit that it was about the best he had seen, and he made the re mark that ho would like to come here and invest in ortcharj land. His stay here was only a day and a half, but he made good use of the time, asking questions, taking a ride through the valley, gathering data for his story, and left on the noon truin Friday for the East.
