HOOD RIVEB GLACIER, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1910 ARTHUR D. MOB, Publisher. NabaeriptloB, tl.50 Per Year. SAOTAICLAL'S. Christmas day belongs to the child ren and Santa Claus also belongs to them. To them he embodies generos ity, kindness and merriment. He is the gift bringer. He so dominates the day that thoughtful mothers have won dered whether it is well to dwell too strongly upon his charms. They have been alarmed that his coming down the chimney or Btove pipe may crowd from the minds of the younger genera tion of this big world the higher mean ing of the day;, that the child Christ whose coming it commemorates might be excluded. It may seem odd enough that the erisrinal Santa Claus the saint from whom the children derive their won. derful yet Christmas gift-maker was not at first associated with the Christmas day Even now tit. Nicho las day is observed in some foreign countries on the saints own day, De cember 6. It is on that day according to their merits that he brings them gift or a stick. St. Nicholas day, like that of other saints, is not his birhtday, save in the sense that it was the day when he was born into heavenly life. The real St Nicholas, from whom our Santa Claus, the patron saint of Russia, who has a great many churches named after him, lived and performed acts of kindness in the fourth century ; died and was trans ported to Paradise, December 6, 343, He was buried at Bar!, Italy, and the day is kept as a holy day. It grew to be the custom of little child ren, whose special patron he was, to place their shoes and stockings near a chimney on the eve of St. Nicholas day, always confident that he would not overlook them. The next morn ing these receptacles never were found empty of the things dear to children's hearts and they firmly belived that the good St. Nicholas bad brought them during the night. In the convents where young maidens were educated ilk stockings were' kept for this spe cial occasion and were hung on the door of the abbess with little notes in forming the saint of the special things each girl wanted. And lo, miracle of miracles, in the morning their requests had been answered. It is to be hoped that Hood River boys and girls will find their shoes and stockings well filled Christmas morn Ing through the generosity of Santa Claus, whom they call St. Nicholas in Christmas songs and stories, though the more familiar name of Santa Claus is oftener on their ruby lips. In Austria for many generations St. Nicholas procession was an import ant festival. The line of march was composed of men and boys, some dressed as angelB, others the opposite. On the eve of December 6, this pro cession passed from house to house. VISIT ORCHARDS OF PAJARO VALLEY The children in each home were cate chised as to their goodness and bad ness. If they had been good the angels rewarded them, if otherwise they were left crying without gifts. The legend on which the good saints' gift-making disposition is based, is this: A poor man at the time of St. Nicholas had three daughters to whom he could give no one in marriage. St. Nicholas wished to relieve them of their poverty. So he hit the trail for the poor citizen's place of abode se cretly one night and threw three large sacks of gold into tho window, one for each maiden. The legend does not state whether the maidens caught a husband or not, but evidently they did, If there were any counts or dukes in the neighborhood at the time. Be cause of this generosity St. Nicholas became the gift-bringcr of his time, also the patron saint of the maidens of the universe. St. Nicholas, in his early days, con fined himself to shoes and stockings exclusively for receptacles for his gifts, but Santa Claus is more mod ern and up-to-date and doesn't seem to care whether he deposits his gifs in an old sock with a hole in the toe, or the family wash tub, or suspended from an illuminated tree. The tree as a kift-bcarer is not a modern idea. It is older than St. Nicholas or even Christmas day itself. In the day of creation it was known, was coeval with old man Adam and wife, Eve, for did it not bear the fruit of all knowledge, of which they ate? The Egyptians used a palm as a gift-bearing tree. In Rome a fir tree was used all same Hood River. An other legend : The thunder oak, sacred to the cruel god Thor, .crowned by a lonely snow clad mountain. Beneath it a fire was kindled near an altar surrounded by white-robed warriors bold, who waited to see a little child die under the hammer blow given by the high priest. Then came Boniface, bearing his cross, symbol of a better religion which was to overcome that of the deadly hammer. Felling the old oaken tree under which the cruel religion were held in cold and quiet, he bade tho people to take from tho mountain a tir tree and bear it to the chieftain's tabernacle where they could celebrate in peace and love the birth-night of the white Christ who came to save, and not to sacrifice little children,- so you see the Oregon fir is still the lead ng Christmas tree. The mumming of the olden days ; the gay pranks of the Lord of Misrule ; the bearing with rejoicing and caroll ing the great Yule loir; the decking of church, schoolhouse and home with green fir; the superstitious mistletoe; the wassail ,bowl and mince pies and plum puddings and country sausage; all the quaint old customs can be traced back to ancient times. At Christmas there has si ways been a feeling that distinction of class should be forgotten and only the fact of a common humanity be remembered. Wish you all a merry Christmas. copy which of has the the We are in receipt of a Watsonville Reigster following: Chas. Hall, president of the Com mercial Club of Hood River, Oregon and E. C. Smith, accompanied by their wives, were in this city yesterday for a short stop on their way to Los An gelcs, where they expect to remain several weeks. They are making the trip in Mr. Hall s auto and were ae companied around the loop by Sucre- tary C. G. Redman of the Commercial League. "Both Mr. Hall and Mr. Smith were delightfully surprised with the Pajaro valley, and especially interested apples, as the Hood River valley has lately been forging to the front as an apple producing region and is taking a high rank in eastern markets, ' "You have one of the nicest and best little cities we have seen,' said Mr. Smith, 'and your vast acreage of apples reminds me of our home country. Of course, as you people here ship nearly seven times the amount of apples than do the Hood River people, we cannot compare with you in size. Both jrentlemen wore on tne lapel of their coats the neat and appropriate pin designating a member oi their commercial club. On the pin are two colored apples, one a Newtown rippin and the other a bpitzenburg, designat ing the two varieties the northern people specialize in raisinir. "They were full of praise regarding their association plan of handling their fruit and stated that through their method the value of the fruit in the eastern market has been made at an averaee of from i2 to $2.
