EAST IS LOOKING
TOWARDS THE WEST
J. H. Fredricy, agent for the O. R.
& N. Co. at Hood Kiver, returned Sat
urday from a three rnonths' trip to the
east, where he visited friends and rel
atives in the state of Pennsylvania,
New York City, Boston, St. Louis,
Washineton. Chicairo. and also a
brother and sister in Oklahoma and
Kansas. Mr. Fredricy said that bus
iness conditions were good all over the
east except m Kansas and Oklahoma,
where the crops were a failure this
year. He was royally entertained and
had a very pleasant time.
"I found a keen interest generally
in the Pacific Northwest among all
classes of people," said Mr. Fredricy.
"Business men. and people of means,
want to get away from the cold climate
and the congested business conditions
of the cast. While Hood Kiver was
pretty well known everywhere I went,
yet all of the places in the Northwest
were inquired about. I talked Hood
Kiver verywhere I went, and was
on a conservative basis, fortifying
myself with literature and proofs of
the statements I made. I found the
keenest interest in this country, and
the Commercial Club, to whom 1 re
ferred inquiries, for further informa
tion, will no doubt receive many let
ters from those I talked to.
"From the time I left Cheyenne I
distributed literature, colonist folders,
etc., to those on the train and at the
depots, all the way to the Atlantic
coast. On the train I was kept busy
telling about this country, and soon
was known as "Spitzenburg" to the
passengers. Coming home a party of
Seattle boosters got on the train at
Salt Lake and we debated the merits
of our respective sections all the way
home. I think I got the best of the
argument, however, in the judgment
or the pasengers. Clinching the argu
ment as to which was the best apple
district, Hood River or the Washington
country. I had a telegram from Spo
kane announcing 'the winning of the
sweepstakes. We also got the Denver
and Salt Lake papers giving the par
ticulars, and after that I had it all my
own way. Following this was the
news from Chicago, and before we
reached home the result of the Port
land show was known. There was no
getting away from it. Whether the
Seattle boosters were convinced or not
the passengers were who heard our
