HAIR HEALTH.
D. D. Crosby, son of J. R. Crosby,
Odell. a Hood River boy who is in
the army serving in the Philipines, has
sent the Glacier what he calls a "semi
poem from life in the Philipines."
The verses which are printed below
reflect some of the features of soldier
life in the trorics. Mr. Crosby, who
writes from Jolo Jolo, says he
send a similar one next month.
letter was six weeks in transit.
ORDERED HOME,
have heard the bullets whistle,
I have seen the bolos kill,
have heard the war-tribes chanting
From their outposts on the hill,
know the plague smell of old Jolo,
And the Chinos wily way.
And what it means to be a soldier
Here for fifty cents a day.
But my heart is sad and weary,
And I wish some one would say :
There's a transport in the Harbor,
And I'm ordered Home today."
I've seen the Moro in the Palm grove,
Murder shining in his eye,
Heard my "bunkie" calling "Mother,"
As he's lying down to die;
Seen the fateful mark of Black Death,
On the man just gone along,
Felt the hot breath of the leper
In a panic stricken throng.
So the "wander-lust" has left me,
And I wish that I could say :
There's a transport in the Harbor
And I'm ordered Home today."
I have seen the Tulai boatman
In his cacso floating by,
And the muddy reeking waters,
Where the buried Moros lie,
I have slept in running rivers,
l ve hiked up Burning nuis,
I have sat and shook, and shivered
With the fever and the emus. .
"All the Oriental Jewels,"
For the simple words I'd pay,
"There's a transport in the Harbor
And 1 m ordered Home today.
Hark ! I hear the siren moaning
Out bevond Corregidor 1
It's a gray old army Troop Ship
Coming from the homeland shore,
And it's calling, softly calling
Me to come across the sea,
Where a mother and a sweetheart
Are waiting there for me.
My soldier days are over,
And 1 need no longer stay,
There's a transport in the Harbor
And I"m ordered Home today."
