Insure your orchards by joining the Hood River Apple Growers Fellowship. POPULAR BOND SUBSCRIPTION. The suggestion of Mayor McDonald in his message to the council Tuesday night that the citizens of Hood Kiver insure the sale of the $90,000 issue of municipal water bonds by a popular subscription should meet with the ap proval of the taxpayers. Hood Kiver needs and must have a new water supply. The bond market is not good at this time and while the chances are that a good bid will be forthcoming for the city bonds it is possible that it may not. If an outsider bids higher he will get the bonds and the chances are that higher outside bids will be received if local people show faith in While the rate of interest is not high, it will be more than made up to subscribers in the greater valuation that a pure and ade quate water supply will put upon Hood Kiver property. Portland is having some trouble in onllinir nmiHn for the construction of ,v "ri the Hroadway bridge and has resorted to a popular subscription to raise the money. The following from theOregon ian of yesterday is directly applicable to Hood River and its conditions: "Now there is trouble about raising money for construction of the bridge. The bond market is stagnant. It is not easy to borrow money for any nnhlic rmroose at advantageous rates. iiuyers will not offer a fair price for even so sound and remunerative a security as H bridge backed by the City of Portland. Yet a beginning must be made on the liroadw ay bridge. Money must be had now. The Mayor has undertaken to raise $250,000 by a popular bond subscription. Why not? It is a good investment. It is a great public enterprise. There is plenty of money in Portland. "It would seem that here is a fine opportunity for the banks of Portland to act as a fiscal agent for the city in the placing of these bonds, for it ought to be easy for the banks to ulace these and more like them when the time comes. Will Jthe bankH do it?" A few years ago when Hood Kiver needed better telephone service her citizens arose to the occassion and financed their own company. Pure water is a much greater asset to a town than telephone service. While recent developments would make it seem that the investors in the Home Telephone company were not exactly gaining the ends they expected there is no danger of such a result on the water system, it will be owned and controlled by the municipality, beyond the reach of private parties. Buyers of telephone stock have never received any interest on their investment while the buyer of a Hood Kiver bond has the assurance of the best town on the map that he will get his money. The town that built its own telephone plant, now much older and wealthier, should be able to finance its own water system if it is neeessarv. EAST SIDE ORCHARD BRINGS $2,125 AN ACRE A record Hood Kiver sale was made lust week when K. Elliott, a weatlhy New Yorker, bought 26 acres of land from Herbert M. Vannier on the east side paying 46,000, Five acres of this purchase is raw land ami was valued at 1(500 an acre while the 20 acre orchard which is in excellent condition and planted to standard varieties rang ing from four to eight years old was bought at the rat.-of $2,125 an acre. Mr. Elliott has been here but a short time and is much pleased with the Hood Kiver valley. It is estimated that the Vannier orchard will yield 4,000 boxes of apples this year. Another good Hale to a New Yorker reported this week was that of the Ralph Jnrvis 10 acres in the Oak drove section to Mrs. Mary l.aMonte for $14,000. Mrs. l.aMonte, who had shipped on a Carload of furniture be fore coming 1 to Hood Kiver bought the ranch In line she had been in the valley two days. She is moving from New York to Lot Angeles for perman ent residence and Hood River will serve as her summer abode, lioth Mr. Elliott and Mrs. l.aMonte plan exten sive improvements on their newly acuuired properties. Christie Buys Taylor Grocery. Deputy Sheriff (leorge P. Christie has bought the Handy Comer grocery store of Hubbard Tayl r and has taken charge of that busy little market at the edge of town. Mr. Taylor still retains the feed and grain store which he will operate separately and it will retain the name of Handy Corner as well as the grocery, the two establishments being in the same building. All ac counts contracted prior to June 2 are due Mr. Taylor, who retained all the old accounts of the Handy Corner. The Steamer Charles R. Spencer will start todav making the regular daily excursion run ' between Portland and Hood River and the appearance of the familiar river craft here this afternoon will be the first time sne has been into this ort on a regular run for two years. It was announced some time ago by Commodore Dean that the Silencer would probably be put on the Hood River run this summer and this was confirmed the first of the week when Capt. K. W. Spencer, owner and skipper of the boat, gave out the in formation in Portland that the initial trip would be made today. The boat will leave Portland every morning ex cept Wednesday, which will be the lay over day, and Sunday, when the trip will only be made to Cascade Locks, at 9 o'clock, and will get to the local landing bout two in the after noon. There will be a rest here of one hour and the boat will leave on the return trip at 3 o'clock, getting into Portland about H:30 in the evening. The Spencer was formerly on a similar run but has not been running regularly on the upper Colubmia for the past two years. It was renovated this spring and now resembles a new boat. The wharf boat was towed back to the low water landing near the old mill Tuesday and and the period of landimr near town was closed for another season. The river has been going down during the past week and from now on it will go rapidly. The road to the far landing is much better than it was last year, but it is still much more inconvenient than the landing below the depot. The Mai ley Gatzert is now fairly well established on its summer excursion run making the round trip daily from Portland to The Dalles. It is due here on trie ui trip about 1 p. m. and returning lands at Hood Kiver about 4 :0 o ciock. The Bailey lays off on Thursdays for a clean-up and Sunday the run is made from Portland to Cascade Locks. The J. N. Teal goes up the river Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, making the down trip on the alternate week days. The Dalles City goes up Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, returning on the alternate week days. Tarkington-Cox. The wedding of .1. A. Tarkington and Miss Madelene Cox was solemnized Fridav. Miss Cox having come out from her former home at Mt. Airy Ohio, to join her fiance, who had for several months been located on a ranch west of the planer. The young couple are at home on the ranch in the foothilla'where the groom had erected a cozv cabin in which to receive his bride. Mr. Tarkington, whose former home was Indianapolis and who is a relative of Newton Booth Tarkington, the author, was in the U. S. cavalry before coming to Hood River and is an expert horseman. He is engaged in clearing 20 acres of land on his place and the bridal party left here Friday morning on a load of powder, which was to be used in blowing stumps for the orchard on the Inrkmgton place Freight Agents Coming Saturday. About 80 members of the Pacific Coast Local Freight Agents Associa tion, which is meeting in Portland this week, will tie here Saturday lor trip up the Mt. Hood railroad to Dee and I'arkdalu and to take a look ai the Hood River valley. The railroad men will arrive here on the morning local from iPortland in a special car which will lie transferred to the local line. Luncheon will be served the visitors at either Dee or Parkdale, and they will be given an opportunity to see the electric saw mill of the Oregon Lumber company. The party will be brought back to Hood River in time to have their car attached to the Port land local that evening. From re ports coming from thousands of towns and cities, the Kexall Remedies are certainly demonstrating their full title to the name. Those who have previously refused to buy proprietory medicines because there was no way of ascertaining tneir ingredients, can now purchase Rexall Remedies, the formulas of which they can have for the asking.
