The following thrilling tale of ad venture appeared in the Portland Tele gram Friday : Great excitement reigned in the 'rapper district out on the west side of tne Hood Kiver Valley yesterday afternoon when Constable Joe Hall and posse of ranchers captured two sup posed escaped convicts and took them oetore feuuire Charles O.. Leraraon, only to tind that the suspected bad men were Marry r. Edward, a Fortiana newspaper man, and Burton Jayne, Oil ol A. A. Javne. a Hood Kiver attorney. hhortly afternoon the telephones ot the orchardists began calling Constable Hall, telling him that two escaped convicts were making a run for the mountains back of the Oak Grove section, and giving him excited de scriptions of the two roughly dressed men with heads shaven, who were driving a rig supposed to have been stolen in the lower part ot the valley. at a reckless pace toward the south west. Hall hastily gathered a posse of deputies from the neighboring ranches and a half dozen ranchers started out to head off the bad men. In the posse were Coburn Allen, Dan Skinner, Phillip Carroll, Count Hen de Keding and Fred McCrea. They concealed themselves in ambush about a mile west of the Crapper school along the road which the bad men were taking. As the two suspects ap proached, Constable Hall emerged from among the trees with drawn revolver and tne others members of the posse surrounded the vehicle, giving its occupants no chance to escape. In stead ot trying to escape, however, tne men in the buggy crawled under the seat, fearing they were to be shot. Ordered to nold up their hands the bad men rose and stood while the strong muscled farmers bound their hands behind them. The two prisoners tried to explain, but the excited ranchers would listen to nothing and took them down to the Oak Grove grange hall where Justice Lemmon holds court, i'he two were then arraigned before tne squire, amid the excited villagers, who crowded into the room. Standing before the crowd one of the young men insisted that he was the son of Attorney Jayne, but a rural client of Mr. Jayne immediately came for ward and declared he knew the law yer s family and that the fellow was surely not a Jayne. Given an opportunity to speak for himself, the other prisoner said he was a newspaper man, having recently held a position on the Portland Tele gram and that he had a come to Hood Kiver to do ranch work and gather material for a book he was writing on Western pioneer life. He said that he and the lawyer's son were on their way to a ranch in the foot hills belong ing to Mr. Javne. where they were going to clear some land. He explained their heads being shaved by saying they had taken this means to make sure of cutting themselves off from civilization, 'ine friends of the young men, who have not been accustomed to the hard labor of grubbing out oak stumps, had joked them about the work until tearing that they might weaken in their resolve to spend month in the jungle, they had their heads shaved. As a last resort, the prisoner, who was beginning to con vince SMUira Lemmon ol nis sincereuy produced his watch fob bearing his college fraternity emblem to sustan Liate nis claim to respectability. Edwards was saved at this stage of the game by one of the Hood Kiver University Club ranchers, who recog nized in the supposed escaped convict nis classmate oi the University of Ohio. Further explanation was un necessary and the courageous posBe which had begun to see visions of a big reward for the capture of fugitives from the convict road camp across Uie Columbia at Lyle Wash., was much disgruntled, slipping out of the court room and wondering why any sane man would have his head shaved. Mr. Ftl wan s was reached over the telephone last night alter his thrilling experience with the rural posse and was very enthusiastic about the rapid manner in which the color for hi pioneer life story was being daubed o He and Jayne nad hnally reacneu heir place and had cooked and eate their own supper and the only disap pointment to young Edwards, he said, was the tact that a was nignt and ne would have to wait so long until nonnng to go to work with tne grub ax. He said, "ihis simple me ior nine and you can give my love and commiseration to everybody in civiliza tion.
