POLITICIANS' WZH SEASNON.
That 'he open season for politicians
is now on was indicated Wednesday by
the appearance in Hood River of 0. P.
Hoff, State Commissioner of Labor
and Factory Inspector. Mr. lion cal
led at the Glacier office and tried to
chaer us up after the inspection hold
up which was worked on all the
country newspapers of the state a few
months ago by his representatives.
He tried to explain that the i) wnicn
trie state taxed us for having a man
spend ten minutes looking about the
snep was prefectly just and money
well spent. However, we still fail to
see it. In trying to bIiow that there
was DO grafting and no extra inspec
tors hired In hia department, he ex
plained that his department turned
7 ikhi to the state treasury which
they could have spent if vhey had been
.hi. , think of anything to spend it
fur. The inspection of small printing
officii nets the state a pretty good
a,t at that rate and while ;we are
gratified to now that a portion of onr
money gets by the army ot peuy onice
holders into the coffers of the people,
it seems reasonable that more just
method of taxation might be framed
up. No mutter who is inspected, the
mate should not conduct the inspection
hiiaineki in order to keep a bunch of
ne'er do well, in jobs or to get a
muMU fur itself.
After wo had explained to Mr. Hoff
what we thought of his inspection
game, of course it was not the pys-
choiogical moment for him to leu us
that he was a candidate for re-election
However, we have our guess that he
in Hi ter the tofficc again and he carries
a good combination to win. He carries
a card on which the most prominent
thk exceot his name in the union
printers' label which ought to catch
the union labor ejement. On the lapel
of his coat, he wears several lodge
amhlama which should line up the tra
tamaJ vote and when he beginB to talk
it is a cinch the should land the German
voter.
HOOD RIVER AS IT
IMPRESSED INDIANIAN
(Continued from First Psge.)
A new German paper, "Der Ruf des
Western" (The Call of the West,)
has been launched in Portland. With
.or meairer knowledge of German we
were led to believe in reading over
the paper that it was to be devoted
to the argicultural interests of the
Pacific Coast with particular attention
to the German farmers. The paper is
well nut up and should find a good
field. Among the advertisements is a
list of Hood River "Obst Farmen.
