K. & N. ia going to build a new depot for Hood Hirer thin year. The railroad decided to do this without any asking or sollcits tiou upon the part of this oity and when the announcement of its inten tion waH made in tbe i; lacier a few weeks ago it came as an agreeable auipriee. It ia a surprise to get any thing f out a railroad corporation without aaking, begging and pleading. However, tbe O. H. & N. get more freight and passenger business in and out of llood Kiver than any way station on its line and why should we not have tbe beat? A committtee has been apponted by lbs Commercial Club to try to get the best poefible depot tor this point. It is understood that the new depot is to be built on tbe site of tbe pre sent one, and the committee should urge upon tbe rallioad the desirabil ity of having a larger depot yaid I he railroad grade is on snob a low level compared with the rest of the town that it would be practically ln possible to maintain the beautiful and commodious station grounds wbloh may be found other plates. However, it would be an excellent plan for the O. Ii A N to acijulre the lot on tbe corner of Seoond and Cascade, which Ik occupied by the (Jerdes lodging house, which would give It a triangle shaped sttalon grounds bounded by these, streets and Its tracks. Tbe committee should urge thll plan nn the railroad as It would add much to the impression of a new-comer to have the pretty new depot baoked up by a green lawn bank Instead of rub bing up against the rear of a large frame looming house, which ia un sightly at Its best. THE ASS EMMA 1'KOI'OSITION. 'I he i ilncii i re prints from tbe Ore gouian the views of a number of local men In tcganl to the proposed aaaem tly. The ansenibly, aa we understand it, la proposed to be a gathering of delegates tiom the various oountlea on the old convention atyle to reoom mend candidates to be voted oa at the primaries. There seems to us tu be no haim In this plnu. It will not be In violation of tbe prlamry law and it will only he able to reoom mend to the consideration ot tbe paiiy at the primary. Tbe Kepubll can voter in Oregon, wbo form an overwhelming majority, are represent etl In the U. H. Senate by a Democrat and a what you may-call him. Thll state of afftlrs needs remedying When the majority of the votera te lleve lu the ltnpiibllcan principles they should he repreaeutod by men who atand by tbeae principles. If the assemtly will help us to gain this point we are for tbe assembly. Many of tbe leading men ot the party be lieve that It will be tbe means of get ting the party together. We do not feel sure that It will, but we are willing to try it, as there Ii little danger of making things any worse. THE M If M. I, SCHOOL. It has been suggested that Hood Kiver invite the state of Oregon tu place Its normal school here, provld ing the state wishes to establish and maintain but one school. In the near future the citizens will come togethei in a mesa meeting in order to get uu expression of tbe community on tbe subjeot. Kxceptioosl advantages exist here as a location for an iusti tutiou of higher education. These ail vantages should be net befora the state and an invitation extended to put tbe uormal here. Hood Kivei has scenery, climate, healthful sur roundings, trauspoitatlou taollltlet and a community of oitizena not to be excelled iu Oregon. We can base our olfer wholly on the merits of Hood Kiver and if tint people of the state fail to recognize them It will tie mote their loss than ours. The Itosehurg r. numerical Club ia instituting a campaign among tbe people down theie to "know Douglas county first." the Idea being lutro tluced by Darby Kichardaon, recently secured as publicity mail, la to ao iiialut people with their own county so that they, knowing Its possibili ties, will he able to boost It Intelli gently, instead of scatter lug abroad a lot of glutei tug generalities. Hood Klcerltis who do not know their own valley, and we trust they are few, should take Koseburg's tip and get acciiualnted with the opportunities of llood Kiver. There Is less exciue for iguorauce of Hoed Kiver County by is residents than ol Douglas County by the Koaelmrgeis, because llood Kiver stands preeminent before the world with its cue great trull raising in it try, while Douglas county overstretchiag from the I'aclllc to the ridge of Cascades em braces many diverse opportunities. New York Times. Origin of the Term "Gringo." To the average Mexican all Ameri cans are "gringos." They are too po lite to call you a gringo to your face, but among themselves It Is the term generally used In referring to Ameri cans. It Is a term of disrespect Just as "greaser" when applied to a Mexi can is an opprobrious term. "Orlngo" had Its origin during our war with Mexico tu 1847. Bobby Burns' song, with tbe chorus. George Augustus Bala, who had studied Cuban clgarmaklng on the spot, once set forth that three kinds of cigars come from Havana itaelf-tlrst, genuine Hhviiihih, made of tobacco grown, cured and rolled In the Island of Culm; second, cigars composed Inside of United States or Kurofieau tobacco imported Into Cuba, with un outside wrapper of Havana leaf; third, cigars brought ready made from Kurope, mostly from Bremen ant! Queen Elizabeth liked her jokes, and. although her pleasantries were of a less sanguinary (urn than her father's, she must have been even more for mldable than usual when disposed to be frolicsome. A tale may be found In one of Lord Essex's letters with regard to a new dress belonging to one of her maids of honor, over ihe pos session of which the owner had been rash enough to exhibit some elation. The young lady. It seems, was several inches taller than her majesty, hardly perhaps quite a nice or loyal thing to be.
