LIME-SULPHUR USED

The progress of tbe work bai been
mentioned in former issues of this
paper and all we oau si.y now about
tbe result of this season's work is that
Lime Sulphur bas agaiu demount t at
ed its fungicidal value by keeping
the foliage free tmni oab. lhe result
of the previous year's work wan given
iu the September issue of the lletter
fr'iuit and tbe information will again
be available, together with tbe te
suits of thin season's work, both at
Hood Kiver and Corvallis, in a forth
coming bulletin.
lhe polut to be emphasized now is
tbe excellent opportunity the apple
growers iu flood Kiver Valley have
forLHtumpiug out atple soab or at
least of bringing it under oontrcl.
. I ti. familiar with the Hte-hiatory
of the tuugus cauuiug apple soab know
that it passes tne winter aa a sapro
pbyte ou the ecaying apple leaves
and that i hi re h-aveH are tbe source
of tbe spring. infestation. It is evi
dent, then, that if every aoabby leaf
is destroyed butweeu now and spring,
there will be no scab next year.
Atlbougb olimatic conditions this
year were rather uuat durable tor tbe
development of tbe fungus, observe
tioua which have been made, Indicate
that there are few orchards in tbe val
It y that do nut coutaiu tbu fungus
ou the toliage. Xbls is especially
true if tbe Newtown. The writer bas
been able to hod but few Newtowus
trees that do not bear iulested leavea.
The stamping out or coutiol of tbe
fungus oan probably be best ancom
pushed by one of tbe following niotb
ode.
lhe Hi -it and ratbei costly oietbod
is that of railing aud burning the
leavea atfer they have fallen from
tbe treea. 1'he second aud probably
equally effective method la to plow
the leavea under aa deeply aa possible
Either of tbe above methods will re
quire tbe concerted action nt all tbe
growers and should te practiced sev
eral oonseoutive years. Aa aucb con
certed actiou ia not likely to prevail,
it will tall to tbe individual grower
to insure bis crop by tbe proper use
of fungicides. Ibis oan be doue most
effectively aud cheaply by the use of
a fall application followed by one or
two spriug applications as the leaves
aie unfolding. If tbe spriug be wet
and favorable for tbe development of
tbe fungus, mure applications should
be given.
With tbe beginning of the fall tains,
the scab colonies tbat were beld more
or leas in check by tbe dry lucnmer
weather, again become active and
spread tbe infection among the
leaves. It is ibis fall infestation tbat
serves largely to oairy tbe fuugus
through the winter.
The tall iu'eotion can be checked
by applying either Bordeaux or Lime
Sulphur as toon as the fruit is gather
ed, lhe Station has begun the da
mnustraticn spraying for the coming
season by using Lime Sulphur, dilat
ing tne 32 degrees lieaiime stock uola
ttou I to VI. This will give a spray
testing about 1. 01 sp. gr. and which
will not only control tbe scab but
will destioy all exposed Autbracouose
spores and the Sun J use Scale as well.
It should also have detrimental effect
upon tbe Ureeu and Drown Aphis
aud their eggs. The use of Lime-Sul
phur for this purpose, however is still
somewhat in the nature of an experi
ment aud we hope to give more de
finite intorniation next year.
Another point to be investigated
tbe coming year is the time tbe pur
tect stage ut tbe apple scab tuugus
matures, 'be date tbe spores are set
tree aud become capable of infestiug
tbe youug apple leaves iu apriug pro
bably varies with tbe looaiity and
season, but it tbe date oau be approx
iniHtely determined for Hood Kiver
valley, it may serve to lessen the work
uecesaaiyfor scab ooutiol.

Have You
Planted Stark Delicious?
If not make it the fust and biggest item on your
next order you'll never regret it. Delicious is the
most wonderful apple known Jo horticulture for
quality, keeping qualities andsclling value. This year
it the 6ole of the Wenatchas Valley Fruit Growers'
Ass'n (Washington) Delicious brought $3.00 per
oox f. o. b. theie (the present market value is$ 4. 00),
while Spitzcnburd brought only $2.50, Winesap

selling with Jonathan), Baldwin $1.15, Ben Davis

Delicious is today mulling more profitsbig
profits, for the long-headed, fp'-sighted orchardists
who have planted it than u:iy other variety. Write
for "The Apple Stark Delicious" a booklet giving
its full history and the opinions of the world's
greatest horticulturists and successful orchardists.
It will convince you. Last year we sold 1 ,250,000
trees of Delicious alone and could have sold another
i million had we had them. Planters now-a days
do not buy a variety at that rate unless there's a rea
son. And there is one send for the booklet.
Stark King David Apple
You should plant it along with Delicious plant
it largely -you'll never regret it. It's a money mak
er, aud a big one. It has highest quality, is a long
keeper, very hardy, and has beautiful color. Sells
at highest prices. Many planters think it better
than Delicious.
"In my opinion King" David will surpass Delicious al
a commercial apple. It is fme as silk." Rev'. T. H.
Atkinson, Entiat, Washington.

year. I consider them far ahead of Jonathan the fruit
Is larfer. hae better color and flavor and is a better
keeper. D. J. Hayden, Chelan Co., Washington.
Kins' David stood 25 degrees below zero last winter
without injury while Ben Davis suffered severely.
K. G, McDuufall, Chelan Co., Washington.
King David, a very rich red, makes a most beautiful
apple. Hangs on the tree well, equal to Ben Davit
and just as productive; quality is equal to Spitzenburg;
picked three boxes from one acion grafted on Ben
Davit. It is the finest apple you have for this part of
the country; the most beautiful apple grown; can't help
but tell anywhere, and ahead of all others. Have
heard nothing but King David all thit teaton. Have
hail to date tifty-two parties at my place to tec tStme
apples. F, Dan do, Chelan Co., Washington.
Include King David in your next order. You'll
never regret it and will want more when you see its
magnificent fruit.
Stark Early Elberta Peach
One of the good things you can not afford to
overlook. It is winning golden opinions from
experienced fruit men the country over. Better
quality than Elberta and ripens ten days to two
weeks earlier, reaching the markets when all other
good peaches are scarce and thus commanding high
prices. A great shipping peach, surpassing Elberta.
1 believe Early Flherta is one of the bett varietiet
introduced llttteS the first Elberta came. In Early
Elberta one h is till of the good qualitiet of Elberta, and
the additional feature of early ripening. When this it
taken into consideration, and when it is planted along
with the original Elberta, much of the strain and con
gestion wlrich comes with peach hnrvctt will be greatly
reduced. The shipping teason wilt be lengthened.
E. H. Favor, Ass't Horticulturist, Davis Co., Utah.
Having tested itt shipping and keeping qualitiea
thoroughly, without doubt it it the most valuable ad
dition to the commercial peach list introduced in recent
years; an excellent shipper and at a keeper it has no
rival. L. Marsh, Hort. Inspector, Davit Co., Utah.
J. H. Hale (The Peach King) wrote me that he took
some Early Elberta home from Georgia and that they
kept nearly twice at long at Elberta. Dr. Sumner
Gleason (Originator of Stark Early Elberta) Davit
Co., Utah.
Early Elberta It all right. Two trees bore fine, yel
low, spicy fruit and although riot a full crop, it wut more
than wat produced by 50 Elberta trees in the tame
orchard. Ripened with Carman. E. H. Riehl, (111.
Experiment Station) Pres. Alton Horticultural Society,
Madison Co , III.
Stark Early Elberta is worthy of your utmost
confidence plant it largely and reap the harvest ol
profits which will surely follow. The true Stark
Early Elberta can be had only of us. We
purchased the exclusive propagating right from the
originator, Dr. Sumner Gleason.
Other Western Varieties
The success of an orchard is dependent upon the
judgment displayed in the selection cf varieties
the profit paying kind. And profit iu fruit growing
means quality. Quality and color are the two
things that the great fruit consuming public pay
their money for. That's certain you can't deny it.
Increase your orchard profits do it by planting
the splendid tested special sorts of Stark Trees. Begin
now - don't wait until next season. Plant now
and be that much nearer a big profit paying crop
than you would be by waiting 6 months or a year.
Here is a brief list of varieties highly adapted
to western conditions the kind that will make a
