The quartette composed of Cornell fellows, was oalled upon to stiirt oft tbe post-prandial festivities uud they did so well that they were oalled buck several times during the eveniug to entertain tbe clubmen with the college aongs. Judge J. L. Henderson, was called upon for the tirst toast, .ud be responded to " The Ladies" In a delightful manner. E H Sbepard, "father of the University olub", was asked to tell of the growth and prosperity of bis "year old son" and he told of the tegioniug aud progress of the olub during tbe first year of its life He told that tbe present mamberghip was 117 and tbe 102 of the members were actively enaged in raising apples in te Hood Hirer district. This showed tba about 15 per cent of the orchard ists were college men and testified to tbe just claim Hood River has to in telllgent froit grownig. So far as Mr. Sbepard had been able to learn, the local club hac the distinction of beiug the ooIt- oiganization ot its kind wbicb thrives in so small a com munity and shares witb Portland, Seattle, iacouia and Spokane tbe honor of having tbe only university clubs in the Pacific northwest. Frank Cutler spoke ot tbe relation of tbe club to the valley and outlined briefly tbe gteat intlueuce wbicb tbe olub oould have in tbe development of the district. A. W. Morrison re sponded to the sentiment ot "Our Alma Mateis" aud spoke feeliugly of tbe ties which bind tbe college man to the institution wbicb contributed the happiest years of his life. Murray Kay contributed to the pleasure of tbe evening with two sil s which marked him as an old glee club "star".
