HOOP gggg OLACIEK THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, ggg. I THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OPENED ON MONDAY In' tchool doors of llnoil Ulver opeMd Monday morning undur the in it favomble oouditioun in the his tory of the city, lltioil Kiver lia dev el iped so mpidly the last few years that her resources have tieen Keverely tu ed to provide room tor the ever n , easing iiu ml.er or popill. bu t with the iiiKn Sohool btiildiuK in use this dirlioulty Is met. i he Kchnol lioanl have done every tl D pOMlble to get thu Imil liii(.'N in the best ot shape for the coming year, The W. (J, Mol'herson ("o. have a huge force of men at work In (tailing DOW heating systems, similar to that in the tiigh School, iu the Park S1 refit and l-Measaot View buildings. T he old furnaces were burned out and in fact never have given satisfactoiy service. This system of heating and ventilating is one of the most pro gressive steps yet taken Id school building. This will materially reduce the lire risk iu the Park Street build ing where it has been rather above the average. Tour lluhaadH, the janitor without peer, has had a force at work cleaning the buildingi frum top to bottom. It Is needless to say that they will be clean when he gets through with them. In supplying the vacancies in the tenoning force oaused by resignation, the board have used every precaution to get the best teaohres available. With the earnest and united co operation of all the patrons of the si hools the coming year will certainly denote success. The superintendent realizes that the schooN oau be improved in many ways. In fact there are so many things that it is a question at times us to the most important to take up. It is not advisable to scatter effort and attempt too much. Lust year an earnest eflort was made to get the students proporly classified and the work correlated. Much work had to be done that was not mastered iu a lower grade. Thoroughness was the watchword of the year. In addition to thu', this year it is the superin tendent's intention to, as far as pos sible, eliminate the waste ot time effort, and material. He is convinc ed that at least half the energy of many Mtudents goes into the waste paper basket. Kxpeiienced school meu have told blm again and again this lammer that it Is not possible to control this. Hut he is nouvinced that with the aid and support of the teaohers he can do much to formulate better habits. In order to put this plan into execution he desires that all pupils, High (School students in cluded, come without wilting paper. Aside from the paper ..that will be furnished the pupil, the teacher will determine just what the pupil is to bring I' is intended to emphasize the necessity for the pupil to think and reaHoii for himself. Parents and teachers alike can do a child much harm by doing mental work fur the child that the child should do for blm esf. The super inlendent will em phasize to every teacher the impor tanoe of preparing the student to do for himself any Lome work that may be assigned. Should any child not be so prepared, the parent will confer a favor by letting the superintendent know about it at once. The work will be so arranged this year that each teacher will have at least a hulf hour each day to devote to those students that requires special personal help. This period is not set aside as a punishment for the pupil, but for bis welfare. It is desired to reduce the failures this year to a minimum. In oase a pupil needs to takes advantage of this special help and fails to do so in the right spirit, he will he transferred to a lower grade at once. ,'Koonomy," "Industry", and"everybody for himself," are to be the additional slogans of the year. "1'utions and friends ot the schools are invited to visit any of tbe rooms at any time. Your preseuoe is never an intrusion. Instead it is an inspir ation to teacher and pupil alike. It is human nature for one to enjoy hav ing one Interest himself iu what one is doing with conscientious effort. Pupils under six years of age are not admitted to school. It Is probable that there will be no mid year en tering class this yeai. Pupils should register on tbe open ing day of school. Kaon pupil should bring whatever second hand books he may have, lor his grade, with him the tirst moinlng so that tbe teacher oau give him a correct list of new books to secure. Pupils coming fiom other schools should bring their promotion cer tificates with them. Klghth giade pupils are to report at the Perk Htreet building only. In all other grades those pupils living below the brow of the bill will report at the Park Htreet building; those above at the Pleasant View building, with the exception of those that are to .he in the siooud grade; these pupiU are to report at the High School building.
