THE PAY STREAK
OF THE A. Y. P.
Every great world's fair must needs
bare some place ot general amuse
ment; some place to gratify both the
normal and the abnormal inclination
of mankiod tor that which is curious,
strange or wonderful. Great occa
sions, like the world's fair, aeem to
develop in people a superabundance
Of exbubeianoe requiring some place
to give It vent, like the safety valve
Ot a ate tin engine; a subway or side
exposition for all kinds of rema kable
Shown, distinct from the main expo
sit ion itself. Understand that many
Of these shows are intensely interest
ing as well us instructive and useful,
Others while interesting, are, never
tbeless, on the fake order; that is,
they take your money without givinR
you value received. So ! CbiOdgo had its
Midway Piaisanoe, St. Louis, The Pike
Portland, The irail, and Seattle has
The Pay Streak, a Western miner's
phrase, here meaning, perhapa, rich
in amusement and fun.
We visited just three shows on the
Pay Streak, first, the Eskimo village,
just as they appear in their far away
home in the North-land; bouses made
of the skins of animals or of ice (Im
itation ioe, in tbis case'. ihere we
saw a native Eskimo man who who
is said to bate aocompanied Capt.
Peary in his famous Arctio expedi
tion in whiob be reaobed point nearer
the North Pole than any former ex
plorer. Here we also saw a young Es
kimo girl sixteen yoan of age who
was born in (Jbicago when her parents
were attending the world's fair in
that city in 18'J'J. 'Ibis gill has since
spent some time in the publio schools
of New York City, and now speaks
the English language well. Those
who are judges say that sbe, dressed
in her rioh suit ot sealukin furs, is
good looking. The Eskimos are a
slow moving people.
Next we visited the lgorrote V ill
age, the wild men of the tropios, tbe
inlanders, or more properly, tbe high
landers of Luzon in tbe Philippine
Islands' tbe head-bunters, tbe dog
eaters, the cannibals. The men, gorg
eously arrayed in their breech clouts
of extremely meager dimensions, en
tertained us with a wild exultant dance
around some imaginary captive, ren
dering tbe occasion more hideous by
an unceasing moutnoous din on their
harsh metal drums and tam-tams. A
variation was presented in an exbicit
of their skill lu casting spears at a
post (supposed to represent a man),
plaoed a few rods distant; thetbiustei
when successful in making bis Bpear
stick without falling out would de
mand a nlokle of some bystander.
Some of tbe men were engaged in
forging or manufacturing these spears ;
and any gentleman (or lady tor that
matter) who desired to go on a bead
bunting raid, oould purchase one of
these spears for tbe meager sum of
$1.75.
Tbe Igorrotes are really an inter
esting people. Four years ago at Port
land, I thought tbey were hardly
worth seeing, but tblnk differently ot
tbem now. An eminent professor
from tbe Oxford University of Eng
land, who is now gtviug a course ot
lectures in tbe summer school of the
Washington State University, is rank
ing a special study of the Igorrotes.
Itjia related that tbe prolessor lecently
presented tbem with a short haired
dog for table use, whereupon they re
ciprocated tbe courtesy by extending
to bim an invitation to dine with
them, wbicb he did ; tbe professor
pronounced tbe dog meat (short-haired
dog meat, mind you) a gastronomic
delicacy. Just prior to tbe time nl
our visit to this village we bad par
taken of a sumptuous repast consist
ing of a cup of tea and a couple of
wafers at tbe famous Formosa tea
bouse on the opposite side of the
grounds, hence telt no Inclination to
partake ot the dog-meat or man
steaks either. Hut seriously tbe Igor
rotes are not such a savage appearing
people after all ; they are just about
what tbe habits of their pas' lives to
gether with ;)00 yesrs ot oppressive
domination has made tbem. 1 fanoy
that one would be about as sate in tbe
bands of a wild lgorrote in his native
haunts, and perhaps more so than in
the bands of a " blaokhanded" Italian
who bas always dwett on tbe civilized
shores of the Mediterranean, heneatb
the cerculean sky ot fair Italy, to
whose progenitors the ap ;etle Paul,
within the walls of the "Eternal City"
nearly twenty centuries ago, ex
pounded concerning the kiugdom of
Uod, both ot tbe law of Moses and
out of the prophets, addressing them
as men and brethren.
The lgorrote women are modestly
nled and were diligently pursuing
their daily arocations, weaving coarse
cloth, making rude curios to sell aud
taking care ot tbe babies. Worthy of
mention is tbe lithe, graceful body of
this wild man, uniformly brown as a
berry from head to foot; a bright,
shiny bronze hue peculiar to tbis
people alone; tbelr muBcles not abrup
and angular as characterized by men
ot the white race, but gracefully
rounded wbicb seems to add to tbeir
agility or quickness of motion. Ot the
lgorrote it might be said, be is the
only man living man who can, in good
taste, appear in public olsd in a full
Iress suit consisting of no clo bing,
except a breech cloth. The Igorrotes
are worth seeing.
Finally we attended the show ad
vertised as the conflict between tbe
Merrlmac Bud the Monitor; a combi
nation of moving piotures and rano-
ramio views on an immensely large
soale. It is without exception tbe
most remarkable thing ot tbe kind
that 1 have seen; it portrays an his
torical event of tbe late civil war; an
event familiar to those who have stud
ied tbe history of tbose times, a bat
tie between the first two iion clad
ships; tne result of which formed
an epoob in tbe history of tbe Ameri
can people. The Mouitor won the
day; otherwise perhaps the South
might not have be n conquered, and
today we might be twojuatious Instead
of one. Tbe result brought about a
radical change in tbe history of naval
warfare. Modeled after these little
protected vessels the le sdirg natii n
of tbe earth have made and are mak
ing their gieat monster iron-clad war
vessels ; behind wbich these leading
powers stand defying, and as it were,
shaking tbeir lifts at eacb other. 1
regard this show as the most wonder
ful thing in itself that we wituessed
on tbe grounds.
Another striking feature ot tbe Pay
Streefe is the Soenio Railway with its
cars of passengers (live passeners)
dashing around among alpiue peaks,
aud over bridges tt at span wild chasms
aud waterfalls. It is eisy to imagine
that you are among tbe Alps.
I he shows and attractions of the
fay Streak are said to be of a decid
edly blgber character than tbose pre
sented in the side expositions of other
world's fairs, and 1 thiuk tbis is true
judging from the three former ones
wbiob 1 have attended; however we
visited only the three shows above
named.
Some of the shows ottered sensa
tional programmes, at least one would
be ledto Judge so from tbe loud proc
lamations of tbe human mouth pieces
who stand at their front entrances
repeating the wondroue things tbat
are to take place inside; judging too,
om toe little free exhibits which are
presented in front of said show bouses
prior to the opening ot eaob perform
ance, one would be led to conclude
tbat tbe show itself would be indeed
sensational, quite sensational; bow
ever improprieties are guarded and
restrained by the Fair management.
aud most of that which is wituessed
within tbe Pay Streak is either in
structive or productive of Innocent
Minusement. Ibese shows seem to
meet tbe wsnt of the great mass ot
fair young people for such amusement.
