MOOl) RlvM GLACIER, TflOKSBAY AUaUST 6 1609 HOOD RIVER APPLES AT SEATTLE FAIR Oregon liuilding, A. V. P., Seattle, Aug !. Special correspondence. The Hood River Valley shares with equal prominence o' any aection in the beaver state, the center of the stage in the exhibit on the drat floor of the state headquarters. The first glimpse upon euteiiug the door is a massive exhibit ot the kingly apple products of the two general secti ins of the state whose name has beeu ad vertised afar through the immense value) ot the apple crop. The oenter of tbe floor is occupied by a towering pyramid composed of tbe best selec ted samples of the leaders, tbe fruil being artistically arranged with small branches attaobed. Plenty or litera ture on apple ml due, besides intelli gent attendants, are on tap, and this is one of tbe first feattues in tbe building to attract a great deal of at tention from visitors who murvel much at the perfected specimens dis played. Surrounding tbe column of apples boxes are ricked up on tables as packed for tbe commercial demand showing what eaoh grower produces. Scattered through tbe display an: boxes "from the state of Oregon" but in tbe majority of iustauces each grower as well as the grower produc ing it are given credit for the display. That the argument giving promi nence to tbe apple business meet with general approval is the verdict given by "the man from borne," who has good cause for pride in that part of Oregon is taking In illustrating to Kxposition visitors that California and Washington have none tbe best of it in the matter of profitable fruits. Tbe orchards ot tbe Willamette Valley come in for a share of attention for their apples, but the names thai are as frequently seen as any are Hood I liver growers. Several boxes of eaoh brand brown for the market are shown in the fol lowing order: M. H. Carroll La Orande; R. O. Ayers, Hood liner, Oeorge Dewey, Medford ; O. K Cast uer, Hood River; Oscar Vanderbilt, Hood Kiver; Davidson Fruit Com pany, Hood Kiver; A. I. Mason, Hood Kiver; A Hawkea, Hood Kiver; J. L. Carter, Hood Kiver; W. B Lock, Hood Kiver; James Kubanks, Hood Kiver; Hears & Porter, Hood Kiver ; Lawrence & Smith, Hood Kiver; HHP Crest Orchards; Hood Kiver; L. M. Howard, Hood Kiver; Crescent Fruit Farm, Hood Kiver; William Hall, of LaOrande shows a number of leading apeoimen boxes from bit orchards there while New berg, Medford and McMinnville are represented by a considerable collec tion. Being located and shown off to ex oellent advantage without crowding in a building wherein all of the var ied produots or tbe great Heaver state have representation it la felt that (he advertising reoelved from this display alone will redound to the state at large to many times the cost of the exhibit. That many of the people who visit the Oregon building are keen-eyed commercial men admits of no question. One of the direct and immediate reaults of tbe display will undoubtedly be the opening up of new trade lines and extenHion of the market for the best of Oregon prod ucts. It must strike the averrage vis itor that the display made by Oregon is a great improvement over the method ot restricting tbe display of tbe state's products to the cramped booth spaoe allotted sections in the Agricultural and other buildings on the grounds. It is believed it will be demonstrated that the state will reap greater benefits from the dis plays thus grouped than if scattord around In various classifications hh was the rule at previous small exposi tions. For the moderate-sized expo sition Colonel DoHch, himself and experienced exhibit director and bostnr and now director-general of exhibits at tho A. V. P., believes in the offeotive grouping of all exhibits In one building for a state; while, for a large exposition, on the soalo of St. Louis or Kulfalo, and if it be within reasonable lluaucial moans to do it, Don't Overlook this August CLEARANCE SALE OF Broken Sizes of Ladies' Beautiful White Lawn Waists Also Ladies' Summer Underwear at the lowest price Pine line of Ladies' black and tan Oxfords, price $1.75 $2.00 $2.25 Also Men's Oxfords in black and tun from $3.50$ to 4.50 Do Not Miss the Bargains at CARMICHAEL'vS Don't Leave the Hood River District Without Investigating Mosier Valley last two years but are not over half that asked for similar land in other sections, liny now beiore the speculators add their profit, COMMERCIAL CLUB OF MOSIER MOSIER, OREGON. Six the Individual displays in tbe differ ent buildings, as well as the collective exhibit be believes are necessary. In an exposition of great exhibit aieasand many buildings, the aver age sight-seer may not visit any state building and if in bis tour of tbe ex hibit palaces, be is continually greet ed with tbe name of tbe state here and there, this leads him to investi gate more particualrly the state itself which has so many displays. Oregon's great educatioual -lUplay, which is treated very elaborately, is attracting much attention from edu cators here and owing to the detail with which tbe system of public iu struction Is oarried out and exempli fied, it is believed that a handsome reward will be carried off by the state when the jury of awnrds gets together. What Is let for Indigestion? Mr. A. Robinson of Driiinqmn, Ontar io, lias been troubled for years with in digestion, and recommends Coauiber lain's Stomach and Liver Tablets as "the beet medicine I ever used." Good Heads and Debts. H. M. Gilbert, In speaking of good roads add debt at a recent meeting in North Vakima, said : "The Vakima valley alone produced 2,1X10 carloads of fruit this year. Kstimating the damage from dust and bruising ana loss of keeping quality at $HX) per car, and you have a lost of 1900,000 for one year tor bad roadi to the fruit misers of a single valley. "Hut you say we will have to Issue bonds and go In debt to Improve our roads. Very true. Let me ask every one of you if It has not been good policy for you to go in debt? Are you not richer because you went in debt to buy Washington fruit lauds? "Kemember when you go in debt for good roads you are, in a sense, loaning money to youiself. it is s cane where 'You have your cake and ent it too'. The money expended foi good roads will nearly all he expen ded in your own community for labor, and the labor will scatter this money where it will enrich the entire com munity, tradesman ami producers alike." f inlei a Infantum Cured.
