Special pi eparutloiis for Monday morning, .day 31, promises to be bel ter than the usual program held here in Hood River and all should lay aside their work and attend the exer cises held to commemorate the day ihe Post and Belief Corps will meet at Hersbey's corner, neat the ceme tery at 10 in the morning, and march In a body to Idlewilde cemetery, where the memorial Ml vices of the tiruud Army of the Republic, will he held orei the grave of their lite com rade, Knoch Cornell, after which the grates of all old soldiers will be strewn with dowers. According to the general orders from the Commander in Chief, the graves of all Confederate soldiers will not he forgotten in strewing (lowers. All old soldiers are cordially In vited to fall iu with Candy Post and take part iu the exercises. Liuoolu s address, delivered by him at Gettysburg, November 19, 1983, will he given, and is iu part us fol lows : Four score ami seven years ago, out aiders brought forth upon this cont inent a new Nation, conceived iu lappiuiiHs iii Liberty aud dedioated CO the proposition that all men ate treated free and equal. Now we are aiigaged in a great Civil War; testing whether that Nation or any Nation so DODOelved and mo dedicated, can long andure. We are met on a great bat- lellelil of that wui. We have oonie to dedicate a portion of that field as a tlmil resting plane for those who hoc gsve tbeir lives that that Nation night live. It is altogether lilting lOu proper that we should do this. But, in a large sense, we cannot ledicate we cannot consecrate we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, Hung and duttd, wbo struggled bore, have consecrated it far above our power to add or de tract. I he world will little note, nor long remember, a ha. we say here but it cuu never forget what they did here. It H fix us, the living, rather, to be here dedicated to tbe unllnishd work which they who have fought here hare thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather tor us to be here dedi cated to the greit task remaining be fore us,- that I nun these bouored dead we take increased devotion to mat cause for which they gave the last lull ffitiHstire of devotion that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain that tins Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom aud that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall net per lab from tbe earth. We take the following extracts from bulletins itsuud by the G. A. B. which will bo timely aud ot Interest to the readers nt the Glacier la 1868 Gen. John A. I.ogun, at that time Coiiimanuor iu Chief of tbe 'Grand Army of the Republio, prnm- niggled sn order to the Grand Army of the Kepubilc, calling upon all com rades to observe the 30th day of May aa Decoration Day to seek out every comrade' grave and to deoorate it with the choicest blossoms of early spring time. Since that time by legislative enactment the 30th day of May has booomo a legal holiday, under the title of Memorial Day. I his year the 30th of May occur on Sunday, and the 31st of May will be observed its Memorial Day. Should there be Posts who have already en gaged speakers and made arrange ments to hold public aervieea on Sat iii day, the 20th of May, they may do o if they cannot change without gieat Inconvenience. For forty successive years the Grand Army of the Kepubilc bae observed this day by visiting the silent camp ing ground wheie sleep our com rades, the Nation's dead, and hon oring tbeir memory by garlnnding their passionateless mounds with flags aud flowers aud teaohiug the lessons of patrotism to all who may unite with them and to the generations growing up around them. Let us this year do our full duty to those who died that the nation might live, and with tetn'er hearts and loving bands honor their memory. Auother mile stone is passed on the great highway of life and we are fast appionohing Memoral Day, the day of sacred memories, when we strew the graves of nut fallen oomrades witll natures choicest blossoms, not to leuew in our hearts the horrors of war, but to dessemiuate among tbe living the blessirgs of peace, good will, aud patrotio citizenship. Tbe dark days through which we passed at e but memories, tut our duty to the liviug is still binding upon us. One of the tenets of our order is, "to encourage honesty and purity iu pub lie affairs. " How can wa do this In a more fitting maunner than by the beautiful object lesson of tbe proper observance ol Memorial Day. The G. A. B. has given this day to tbe American people as an armistice in tbe great battle ot life where they DO you know what It means, bojre and Klrl Who hall from the north and th you know what It mean, Thl twining of gTaen Round the silent cannon' mouth, Thl trewlng with flower th sraa Brown grave, Thl decking with garland th statu brave, Thl flaunting ot flag All In tatters anil rag, This marching anil Ringing, These bell a-rtnglng. F"or the wreck and the wrong of It. boya and glrla, Por the terror and los a well, Our hearts must hold A regrol untold A we think of those who fell. Hut their blood, on whichever aids they fought, Keinade the nation and progress bought. We forget the foe, For we live and know That tb lighting and sighing. The falling and dying, Were but nteps toward the future th martyr's way, Down which the sons ot th Mua and th gray Ix)ok with love and pride Memorial day. -Wide Awake. may pause and live the past over again with their dead. To remind them of the saorlflues of others for the blessings which they now enjoy. To revive In their hearts the memor ise ot loved ones who bave been taken from tbair: home lite, leaving a va cancy which oan never be tilled, and leaving in tbeir hearts a desire for higher ideals and a citizenship which stands for justice and a higher des tiny for the human race. What do we mean by the strewing ot these On tbe graves of our nation's dead? Is it for the sake ot him wbo sees, Or to number the tears we abed? We place tbem there to mark tbe way, As symbols of peace and rest; They are tbe prayers of those wbo pray, Tbe tears of a nation blest. HOOD RIVER WILL CELEBRATE CELEBRATION HELD ON JULY 5 Organization Unite In Maklnir This the Event of all Events Ever Held Here At tbe adjourned meeting of the Commercial Club held last Friday evening it was decided to hold a grand and glorious celebration in flood Biver aud as tbe I' mirth comes on SuudOay it was decided to hold the celebration on Monday, Jnk r A committee ot five members were appointed by tbe chairman, Mr. Larly, wbo will bave full charge of tbe affairs and they are going at the preparations with a will. Let all assist in any way when oalled upon by the committee. The following are tbe members of the executive oommittee and it le at their bandi that tbe Hood River diit net, may expect to bave one of the best celebrations ever held here. 1'ney have selected tbe grounds on the bill which was used two years ago. This will give the citizens plenty of room to celebrate and give tbe eagle a ohanoe to stretch ber wings aud scream all she wants to. The oommittee is Messrs. Dick Mo I .m aid, Chas. N. Clarke, A. L. Car miobel, Geo. Thompson, and J. P. Lucua. It waa also deolded that a straw berry festival be held some time la June about tbe tit tenth, and a oommittee consisting of tbree waa ap poiuted by tbe chair: Arthur Clarke, j. 11. Heilbronner, aud James B. Hunt, who are to oonfer with tbe mem bers of tbe Woman's Club and arrange tor dates, aud tbe details, and It la needless to say tbat the festival will be a success. The matter of a location for the Commercial Club rooms was taken up but nothing detlnate waa decided, A special meeting of the Club will be oalled before a Dual decision will he made. A communication from CulbertsoD & Co.. was received in regard to the hotel Bamona property, which is for sale at 110,000.00, this property con sists of the hotel, whiob renta tor $85 per mouth, aud the sample room on tbe south. Tbe lot is 100x100 feet and ie considered a good buy at tbe price wanted. This sample room ooudl be fitted up very nioely, both up stairs and down and would give tbe Commercial Club plenty ot room for a number of years while tbe rent trout tbe hotel would pay tbe inter ests on tbe investment. Later when tbe Club deolded to build of brlok tbey could do so and would have one ot the best building lite in tbe city. Ibe advantage of owning their own building instead of paying rent ie so prominent tbat It needs no argument. The next proposition was from John Leland Henderson, and was la regard to a lot that be baa for sale. I ins is also oonsideied u good buy but 'his would mem tbat the Club would have to build at once if they pui chased the lot. The next proposition waa from the First National Bank but wh con sidered too bigb for tbe Club to handle and the bank was made a counter proposition whiob waa lett to tbe bank directors of the bank to an cept or reject and was the to be o. ked. by tbe Commercial Club at the special meeting which Ie to be called so tbat all members will be present. L. M. Blowers made tbe Club tbe best proposition. He is going to build somewhat larger than be plan ned if the Club will lease tbe upper half of hie building for a term oi two years at 91,000 for tbe two years, paying H500 in advance. The only dis advantage in this le tbe looatiou, whiob ie near tbe livery stables and just iu front ot a feed baro, and should the Commercial Club decide on this locution, and perohande give s swell banquet, aay in July or Au gust, the odors tbat would permeate tbe air would cause Hpencei, it he were present, to change bis mind when be wrote: Meneeuted I smelt a garden ol sweet rtower, I'hat dainty odors from them threw aronad. Any location in Hood Blver ia good tbe only advantage ot buying out right would be to save paying rent and rent as every oue knowa is throw ing ho much to tbe birds. However the Glacier will be satisfied with any selection that the Commerloal Club Dually decides upon, so do not ask us to decide tbe matter. Ihe following is the program which will be given at tbe church:; Instrumental, Mrs. Humble, Miss Budford and Mrs Chandler. Invocation Bev. W. C. Gilmore Presentation ot Class Dr. J. F. Watt. We hope to see tbe institution one ot tbe leading ones in tbe west, and tbere ie no reason why It should not be as tbe city lncreeses in populutlon.
