are foj without showing it in the
price. They wear so much longer that
the slight advance over unidentified
cheaply-built clothes doesn't at all cover
the saving they bring.
One YTRAGOop suit will survive more boy
handling than two average suits.
Every pair of XTRAOOop knee-pants is
lined all through. This not only means extra
endurance, but also extra fullness and grace to a
degree not to be found in clothes that ae not

BATTLE ABOVE
THE CLOUDS
The following article was read by T.
J. Cunning at a meeting of Canby
Poet, O. A. K. :
Thin battle which began on the
twenty thin!, and on the twenty Httli
of November 18("1, was tbe sequel of
tbe battle of Cluckamaoga about
twelre or fifteen mi ha south iif Chat

whirtb we held witb a feeble grasp,
fearful for a time, that we might be
obliged to fall back fur a more secure
line.
Tbe important of tb position waa

we began immediately to intrench in
our contracted line and would have
fell more confident if we could hare
retained both wagon roads to Bridge
pott, but tbe enemy caused one of
tbe shortest and best road to be
abandoned as tbe road ran along a
steep bluff near the notth bank of tbe
Tennessee rirer for three miles and the
oonfedeiate screened by rucks on tbe
south bank of the river, soon bad tbe
road completely backed with dead
horses, mules and abandoned wagons.
I went over this road one nigbt about
tbe time travel was abandoned, aud it
was not very cheering to hear the
moaning of tbe poor triokeo beasts
whioh it was our duty to put out of
tbelr mi-cry. We bad to keep very
quiet as tbe least noise would draw

in oar amp conditions were not muob
better as three orackers a day for men
and an ear of oorn for horses, wasn't
very bigb living. Gen. Roseoraos was
relieved from command soon after tbe
battle of CbickamauKB but Gen
Thomas did tbe best be oould until
the arrival of Grant, when prepara

Chattanooga and north of Lookout,
and by sunrise were loading tho ad
vance, as escorts of a regiment of
pioneers witb axes, pioks and sboiels.
We were in plain view of tbe enemy
and supposed we were to protect the
plooeets while tbey built a bridge
across Lookout creek as we were
beaded that way, but as soon as we
got under cover of tbe timbei along
the creek, the ploueers Hied to the
right and we deployed as skirmishers
and drove tbe rebel pickets and the'r
reseryes into tbeir breastwoiks, when
we were ordered to Ji down bebiud
stumps, trocs or rocks aud hold the
line at all hazzards whioh was easy for
uj to do, as the enemy was obliged to
expose their bodies to see us and wo
were close enough to make such ex
posure fatal. We kept tbe dust (lying
on tbasa bretiatwoika so tbat all tbey
oould do was to pwa their gun over
and fire at random. ibis exeicise
was continued until it got to be mo
notonous to some and four of our
fellows oalled out "now boys keep
them busy while we have a little
game" and tbey squatted around a
kunpsack for tbe usual pastime poker.
1 was near enough to bear tbeir ex
pression as tbey won or lost. One
said, "if you win our money you will
get plugged. as we take those breast
works and then we'll pick your pock
et!," "What if you get plugged?"
"Then we won't need tbe mon."
Xbe Johnnies must have caugbt
sight of tbeir little game as tbey sent
several volleys so close tbat It seem I
tbey were getting tbe range causing
tbe game to be postponed. An oidei
was passed along tbe line to take turn
and fall back to receive more cart
ridges. Ibis was suprlsing as we bad
reoeived eighty rounds in tbe morn
ing aud now were ordered to take
forty rounds more. It was quite a
problem bow to dispose of tbem con
ventently as but tew bad used more
t au tweuty rouuds. I was muob
amused at an Irishman, to an adjoin
ing company, who bad reoeived bis
extra and was getting them in sbape,
talking like a street uiedioiue faker,
about the valuable qualities ol bis
blue pills H' suid, "tbey are a per

suob gaff until tbe bugle sounded a

shoulders down towards Cbatfauooga.
Witb cheers ruebed to take their
places, some of our men jeering at the
retreating regiment. 1 remember one
fellow singing out "that's tbe first
time i ever saw stars tlyin day time."
As it happened to be one ot the star
oorps. Boon utter this we were en
veloped in a dense fog which appeared
to be a cloud to the people iu the val
ley causing It to be poetically culled.
The battle above the Clouds. During
the first dense fog we weie marched
back aloug tbe cliffs about a mile to
present a rear attack and were order
ed to fortify by using logs, boulders
act., to protect us from the
sharpshooters on tho summit when a
lift of tbe fog exposed us to tbeir
view. The fog was very wet aud
made pouches and oil olothes iu de
maud aud about 3 o'clock some of
the men commenced cooking as they
bad not ueedml it before. Tbe
colonel comuiandug the brigade rid
ing by at this time noticed the men
and some what impatiently ordered
tbem back to tbeir biding places,
saying tbat "the fog is lifting and
you will suou be Iu plain view." Tbe
men got back, but us soou as the
colonel bad gone commenoed tbeir
cooking A Dutchman, ot Company
H., witb his bead through a pouob
was making coffee und frying meat
when a bullet passed through his
pouob and knocked bis coffee pot off,
he threw the meat out aud ran back
saying, "Py Gat 1 fries no more
meat!"
About four o'clock we were once
more ordered to tbe front and form
ed in line witb orders to take and
bold another guliey and 1 thiuk the
last one before tbe road on the east
side tbat runs up to tbe smumit. We
bad to maiob against a heavy Ore tor
about a half a mile without being
able to return the fire as tbe enemy
were oonoealed in a deep guliey and
were only firm to retard our advance.
Tbe ground was rocky, with trees
and boulders but a glauoc along our
line tilled me with pride and enthusi
asm at the determination and coinage
exhibited. Only one man showed
cowardice, tbat was a lieutenant ot
company G who was in command ol
tbut company. He was immediately
ou my left, bis face vvasfl pule aud
showed an agio y ot fear. My first
thouxbt was of scorn and contempt
but changed at once to pity and sym
pithy. 1 said to him did you ever
see this regiment keep a better Hue
on dress parade? A gluuoe at the
liue reassured him aud his soldier
pride came back to blm. We took
the ditch without muob trouble aud
could have drtveu tbem beyond the
road but the log aud duikuess soon
made a turtbur advance impracticable,
and we simply held the liue by shoot
ing at the Hash ot the euemys guns.
We rau short ot amunitiou about nine
p. m. and a brigade of troops was
sent up to divide theirs with us and
ubout 12 o'clock the tiring ceased and
we were relieved ami went buck to
headquarters end. camped lor the
night but before seeking repose my
uew chum, Sargemit Darnbs, and 1
cooked our ration and ate nil we had
in sight und slept I be tleep of the just
and might bave slept all day if tbe
cbeeiing as Old Glory was raised ou
the summit of Lookout had not awak
ened us.
it wub ulternoon before we started
dowu ou the en-1 side of tbe mountain
and crossed the Chuttauooga alley
to Rossritle. We touud no opposition
until almost ucross the vulley, but do j
not remember much delay, only u
little vigoious ride shooting aud cap-1
lure of an aide of Geu. Uragg. Andj
we pushed on into the Hossville Gap
when we changed trout to the north,
auain taking tbe enemy's eurtL works!
ou end curt iniied with scarcely a bait
until we oame to a ridge running euBt
from Missionary ridge where we
were orduied to lie down and bold
tbe ridge at all hazards. My olosest
call during the war was while lying
at this place us a rail In trout got the
bull that otherwise would bave put
me out of oommisiBon. We were soon
ordered forward and met with little
resistance aud before sundown beard
a succession of cheers whioh kept
coming from the north of tbe line a
littl eueurer and louder uutil a oourier
rode by announcing "tbe whole
ridge is ours and tbe enemy lu full
retieat. "
Gen. Wbittuker, witb bis stalt,

the way be bud been treated in not

cause it was bis tuin and tils men

our ranks oalled out, "Ob, General
