Hie smoke oame from the north side or the mountain from BD old cratet. It has keen forty years since the appearance of real smoke hiis been noticed belore. - lone Prcclaimer. 'I lie above bum similar items have been going the rounds of the papers enst of here, iu places where Mt Hood is visible. The statement thai It is the first time In forty yearn that "appearance of real smoke" has been noticed is hardly true, as similar statements are made onoe or twice year not only of Mt. Hood, but of nearly overy other snow capped mountain. Ihese rumors serve to make nervous people uneasy, uud when invoatigaled always prove to be untrue. As a rule the appearance of smoke is seldom seen In the iramedl ate vicinity of the mountains, but from a distance In talking to old niouutaiueeis who are familiar wi Mt. lloud, who have exploied it many times, and who spend oousidei able time iu its vicinity during the sum mei, it is their opinion that the "sinuke" seen is nothing more than the raging of a blizzard over the St) OS fields. A still bieozo in the valley reaches the velocity of I hurricane at times on the mountain top, and oc caslonuily mows In suoh a manner as to oausethe Hue whirling suowr to rise like a cloud aLove the top, nud from u distance has much the appearance of smoke or vapor. Those who have gone out of the beaten trail of the mountain climbers and have peered luto the old crater, claim that there is a faint indication of vapor and sometimes the smell ot fumes can be detected from the dying embers of the old volcano, but even at the mouth of the crater it can hardly be detected Iheie is uo indication that Mt. Hood is awakening from her long sleep, but the accumulation of her ice fields would indicate that it is the sloop that knows no awakening. t'ak Paik uear Chicago, is to have a "bug house, " iu which will be uon llned for experiment only certain in secti suspected of destroying plant life iu the suburb, i'be institution is to bo in charge of the state eutomolo gist. Hanley, president of the First National liauk of this city, yesterday closed a deal for the bank for the northwest corner of Oak and lliird streets, now occupied by J. M. Harry A Co., (ieorge 1). Culbertson & Co , ai d Fuming A Tuft. it is the intention of the bank to elect a handsome two-etoiy brick Luilding on the lot, although the de tails have not been worked cut as jet. The present quarters of the bank are far to small to accommodate the grow ing business, and it was thought best at this time to senuic tne of the best busiuets coiners in the city for a future home, as well a making a "ale and profitable Investment. This insures the building of an other fine business block in Hood Kiver, and will mark the first removal in that block of the wooden buildings that have niBde a big lire risk in that end or the town. The sale was made through J. H. Heilbornner & Co RMd Machinery Arrho. Much interest was taken in the new stoam roller which arrived lueiday from Portland, together with a load grader, being the Hist of the county's road machinery. An oil burner has been purchased, but as it had not ar rived from the east, a coal burner was sent up from Portland tor uee until the other arrives, although if tho ex pense of burning coal is as cheap as oil, tho coal burner may be Uert. A rock ci usher is needed Tor the building of permanent loads, but it was not thought advisable In re r- ohase one at present, us the county cannot purchase cvervthiiu at once. The roller, however, is needed for the surfacing of dirt roads, and the rook orusher can come later. Hood Kuu- ervlsor Clark is getting busv nud work will be done on the mads right away. Plans lor permanent road work nave not been definitely made as vet. oad pieces or road in different carts or tne county to come llrst. NEW SUITS For Men and Boys.
