SHOW OPENED
TWENTY CARLOADS ON EXHIBITION

The Judges.
With the pressios of an elect rio but
tou la tbe executive mauHiou at tbe
Dullou h rapltal Mouday at 10:30 a.
m. by Prettideut Kooeevelt, tbe Jabora
of a large corps of woikersaad months
of toll and car on tbe part of growers
culminated in tbe openiug of tbe Urt
uatioual apple show in Spokane, aayt
a dispatoh from tbe Spokesman Ke
view. Never botore In tbe history of In
dustry bassuob a display ot apples
been assembled, and all other fruit
fairs dwindle luto InsiKnlHoauoa be
fore this exhibition of variety and
perfection. 1'iiis Is the consensus of
opinlou of those who have viewed the
show in its entirety, bs it will appear
when opened to the public thia morn
lug.
Apples o' all sizes and; kinds will
be seen here In the highest state of
perfection and with all the advantages
whiob expert paukiug cau produce.
There is one cm load of fruit eoreriug
151K1 square feet of space, in which
8000 dark rod apples ot uniform size
and shade spread out in one expan
sive slope before tbe eyes of tbe vis
itor. On another of tbe sloping racks
may be seen the bizurre effects of bril
liiiut yellows and bright teds alternat
ing iu live-box lots, while in a-till oth
er plaos 'the rich Arkausus tfluoks
burn with a dull purple Ore aagiuat a
baokground of lighter shades.
The ettect of these varieties, almost
InUulte in number and variations of
shade, is a sight whiob tasoinates tbe
oldest grocer as well as the novice,.
The tank of putting these 20 carloads
of applos Into plaoe has been stupen
dous and every night of the last week
has seen tbe brilliant lights of the ex
hibition bulldiug Hooding a vast apace
of busy workers who oould not com
plete their work In daylight.
To tbe visitors who for the first
time viewed tbe displays Monday
there appear many things that are
novel. Perhaps never before has
man's geuius contrived so many ways
ot utilizing a single material iu such
a diversity of designs There is the
Stars and Stripes done in three colors
of appleB, a white salmon of'true lonn
and.almost natural oolor, figures and
devices, jars, baskets, bairets and
boxes of apples, and just heaps of ap
pies piled up in plentiful confusion.
Among some other interesting
things Is a display which arrived late
Sunday from Luther liurbnuk, tbe fa
mous fruit prodnoer of Santa Rosa,
Cal. This consists of 12 fruits, repre
senting six varieties of tbe tbornless
cactus, fruits of tbe passion plant,
rhubarb of extraordinary size, the
fleshy leaves and the fibers of the cac
tus, and last, a plate ot Northern Spy
seedlings. The display is in a show
case by itself on tbe maiu floor of the
armory, where the plate exhibits are
situated. A typewritten note from
Uurbauk makes the following state
ment regarding this new edible cac
tus: "Tbe best fruiting varieties of these
will produce on good soil in a mild
climate tbe third year, from cuttings,
198,000 pounds per sore ot dolioious
fruit and as much or more ot forage
suitable for txeding all kinds of do
mestic animals iuoluding poultry,
bogs and stook.
"None of those so far perfected will
stand more frost than the tig tree.
Hardy ones are on tbe way and will
oe ottered in a iew years.
The armory has been tiro-ided with
a bigb platform, where the band will
play, and with a stage upon which tbe
vaudeville perrormuaoes will be exe
cuted. Arcund three sides are the
plate exhibits of apples and a number
of bootbs, the paintings of A. Mont
gomery, tbe farmer artist, who is here
with a set of oil paintings aud who
will give a number of foreudon lec
tures during the week.
