MERCHANT OF VENICE
To a large and appreciative audi

"Ibe Merchant of Venioe" at the Op

piny was given under the direction of
Miss Hoi brook, the prooeeds of which
are to be devoted tc the ecihool li

capao'ties necessary to produce this

Considering the faot that "The Mer

critics as one of the plays of the great

ticularly well selected cast, the ama

luted ou the excellence with which
they delivered their lines and also de

oostumes that were do doubt much of
an inovation. It would be unfair to
rniike comparisons iu regard to the
nistrinnio ability displayed and any
way. comparisons, as has been said,
are odit us. One of the most pleasing
features was the smoothness with
which the play was put on. The
promptness with wbiob the acts fcl
lowed each other would have done
credit to tbo eUiciency of a profes
sional stage director.
Hetween the first and seoond acts
and also the fourth aud fifth a number
of the lligh Sobool girle made a
pleasant diverison by singing several
catchy songs. Ibe last of these was
given In costumes in which the young
ladles represented Dutch girls aud
were aided in its effect by one of
their school friends who was suppos
ed to be fleeing trom their entreaties.
The musio was tuneful and well ren
dered. The cast of cbarnoters is as follows:
Duke of Venice Wyetb Allen.
Autonio, the Merchant of Venice
Karl Outhank.
